Saab Pride Book – call for entries!

The time is now right for the compilation of the Saab Pride of Ownership book.

If you weren’t around earlier this year, I ran a competition on this site called the Pride of Ownership competition. Entrants were asked to take a great photo (or photos) of their Saab and send them in along with some text about why they loved their car.

We ended up with some absolutely brilliant entries and warm fuzzy feelings all over the place as we shared Saab ownership sentiments all around the world.

At the conclusion of the competition, the plan was to produce a book of the entries for entrants or any other interested parties to purchase. As it turned out, I didn’t have the time nor the capacity to persue that idea and it’s been on the shelf all this year while I got my priorities in order.

Now is the time.

I’d like to keep this process as simple as possible. I’ll be using a web-based publishing house to compile the entries. It’ll most likely be a two-page spread per car, with the pages either 7×7 inches or 8×8 inches (depending on the costs people are willing to bear).

The number of cars and stories that I can feature in the book will either 40 r 60, depending once again on the amount people are willing to pay. 40 cars will mean an 80 page book. For a few dollars more I think I can get a 120 page book (60 cars), but I’ll have to work out what that pricing will be and let everyone know so that a decision can be made.

In the meantime, if you had an entry in the Saab Pride of Ownership competition, I’d like to get your consent to use your photo and story in the book. If you can provide that consent here in comments then that’d be great. I’ll contact all the people who don’t leave a message here by email, but if you can comment here and cut down the workload it’d be much appreciated.

I’d also like to invite all-comers to submit a photo/story for consideration. Even if you already submitted an entry in the competition, you’re welcome to submit something new as well. All competition entries submitted last year will be automatically be considered for the final product.

Please note: this is not another competition and there’s nothing to win this time, except some pride in having your Saab in the book. Also, please note that numbers will be limited and there’s no guarantee that your photo or story will make in there. They will all appear on line here at Trollhattan Saab, though.

What to do: I’d like to make this a book of fantastic imagery and well told stories about why people love owning their cars. What we’re after, then, are some great quality photos of your car, preferably in a fantastic or dramatic setting. Something that sets off the car nicely and maybe tells a little of your story as well (if appropriate).

For this book, the stories are going to be as important as the photos. I can edit the stories for readability, grammar, etc, but I need something to work with in the way of a good tale. So please, don’t just send the photo, send something with the photo.

Where to send it: Please send your entries to my gmail account at swade99@gmail.com. Please make sure you include the words Saab Pride in the subject header of the email. I’ll have a folder set up to receive emails with that header automatically so that they’re all filed in the one place.

What it’ll cost: Bank on a little over US$20 plus postage if it ends up being an 80 page book. A little more if it’s 120 pages. Does this seem appropriate to you?

In the interests of being totally transparent, there will be a margin of around $2 per book to cover the editing, compilation and marketing of the book.

It’s not an easy time to be a Saab fan, but with all the positivity that surrounded the initial competition, I think this is going to be a fun project.

I’ll keep the entries open for a month. I hope that gives everyone who wants to enter sufficient time.

Welcome to the Saab family, Zippy!

I like sharing Saab purchase stories here. It’s always good to hear about someone who’s weighed and measured the contenders and made their choice. It’s especially pleasing for me to bring you this story.

If you’ve been hanging around here a while, you’d know there’s a guy here from Canada called Zippy. He’s been a long-time watcher, a 9-5 hater (just the Dame Edna look, not the car itself) and I’m pleased to say that as of last week, he’s also – finally – a Saab owner.

Zippy claimed a lack of eloquence in his email to me. Garbage. There’s no way on earth I could sum up his thoughts better than the way he did himself:

At the bright old age of 44 and after 26 years of drooling at every Saab I ever saw drive by, I am now the proud owner of a 2004 9-3 Arc 2.0T with a manual transmission and only 49000km on the clock. And to think I was almost tempted by a BMW a month or so back. This car was such a good deal I couldnt pass it up! I have a road trip to the US this weekend and can let you know how that blast down the I5 to Oregon went after it’s done, but here are some initial impressions.

Positives?

Turbo, turbo, turbo. Remember the cartoon Saab used as advertising for the 9-3SS? Thats me, brings a big smile to my face every time.

Handling. Imagine approaching a hairpin curve in third gear and half way thru the curve give her a little gas. She held the line and by the time I had exited the curve I was doing 60kph. Saab needs to keep ReAxss as it totally blew my mind.

Economy. I am getting 28mpg driving around town whereas my Ford Focus with 80bhp less only managed 25mpg on a good day. The 9-3 can be an economical 2litre sedan on one hand and a fire breathing dragon when you want it to be.

Styling. This is easily the best looking compact executive car there is. Period.

I can honestly say the only thing that is difficult to get used to is the steering. It is very light with not an awful lot of feel but with all those positives I am sure I will get over it very quickly.

Monday night Flickr run

Well, I had my days mixed up. I sat down tonight, ready to watch the Celtics close out the NBA championship versus the Lakers, but it was not to be. Tomorrow night. This will happen tomorrow night. For the record, I’ve been on a little bit of a roll for the NBA playoffs — accurately foretold the Heat winning in 2006 and the Spurs winning last year. However, this year, I’ve been off by a country mile. I simply never considered that it would end like this. Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom have been non-existent, and Rajon Rondo has given the Lakers match up problems from the beginning.

So, without basketball tonight, on to the Saabs. I saw several cars in the “artsy” category, so I went with the theme. Prehaps except for the last one.

First, an oft-ignored goody, the Saab 9-2x in a magnificent shot with a strong background color from RyanMcLaughlin:

Next, a neat little vintage Saab pic from Spain for all of you two-digit fans out there. This one is from grismarengo and is sporting a great interpretation of the Catalan flag on the roof.

This shot is such high art that it’s really not even a picture of the Saab, it’s just using the Saab to take an artistic picture of a building. That’s Andrew Burrows taking a picture of King’s College Chapel using the hood (bonnet in this case) of a black Saab. Appears to be a 9-5?

Finally, a Saab that has art work on it, this is a Saab 9-3 with those amazing wheels — these should be mandatory for all 9-3 owners. I really like these wheels on this car! Anywho, our friend Goran Aničić (thank goodness for control-c), presumably from Serbia, is proving to all of us that diesels are great cars even if some of us can’t have them (thanks, EPA!!).

Spring coming to the north…. Time to POO?

It’s getting lighter and sunnier in the northern hemisphere, as evidenced by the photos that are starting to pop up on Flickr as well as in my inbox.

That’s got me thinking about the POO competition and how there was going to be another one in the northern spring/summer. Which also got me thinking about the proposal for a POO book – ay carumba!!

I think I can manage the competition, but in all honesty, I don’t know if I could manage the book. Work, family and blogging commitments would make the task of getting a quality product prepared pretty strenuous. Without knowing what the market would be like, nor if there’d be any support from Saab, this would be a very tall order. I do love the idea of a grass-roots Pride of Ownership publication, though.

GMNext.com — Uncharted Territory

Gents (and Blix and Kaylan), I’ve just recently become aware of GMNext.com, and, of course, I’ve not gone through it in any great detail.

Many of you love to hate on GM. I don’t. But, then again, I was driving GM products for the most part right up until I got my first Saab, unlike most of you. In this case, I encourage you take a different stance. GM is trying here. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. Plus, I have a bit of an agenda which will be revealed later.

There is a wiki set up on the site, so I wandered over to see what that was about. I was presented with this picture:

That’s right, our own Saab Viggen gracing the front page of the wiki. I was a little surprised, until I read the label: “globalization”. Jeez, thanks. We’re the token foreign brand, great :eyeroll:.

And then I had another thought.

This is a wiki, right? Something to which people all over the world contribute, correct? Well, I think that we’ve got people in the TS community here that could handle this with one hand behind their backs. People with real skills and real stories.

My idea is this: GMNext.com is a reasonably open forum that is read by General Motors, even sponsored by GM. If we want Saab to succeed, we need for GM to know exactly what worked and what didn’t in Saab’s past and present. The wiki at GMNext.com is another great platform to exploit to further our cause.

I encourage you to sign up and contribute if you have something to say. And, generally, our readers have much to say on the subject of Saabs.

More Team D including video from the Alcan 5000 rally

As you’ll recall from Swade’s earlier post, Team D are rally rookies driving a 1985 Saab 900 Turbo in the annual Alcan 5000 rally, a 5000-mile drive through the frozen expanses of Western Canada. With the rally complete about a week ago, our brothers-in-arms have been posting additional information, especially a small collection of video clips that presumably they had little time to edit and post while the rally was underway.

This is my favorite of the bunch: A video of the ice slalom on a frozen lake in the Yukon territory:

The Team D Saab did us proud, finishing seventh overall and first in class!

A Mont St Michel series????

I received this photo via email last week and it made me wonder if there’s a possibility of getting one of those garden gnome things happening here on the site.

If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, there’s been various instances where garden gnomes or favourite stuffed toys or similar items have been kidnapped by travelling family members and photographed in various places around the world (the French film Amélie is a good example).

Saab’s are much less portable, of course, but still…..

This was sent in by the guys from the Lone Star Saab Club, who had it sent to them by a guy named Mujdat O. It’s his Saab 900 – with Utah plates – photographed near Mont St Michel, near Normandy. Mujdat was on a D-Day memorial trip back in 2005 when this image was recorded.

Those of you with good memories will know that this is the second photo from this location that I’ve shown here this year.

As part of the Saab Pride of Ownership competition, we had an entry from Bart B in Belgium, who also got the abbey from Mont St Michel in the background.

Robin M, our unofficial Saab Ambassador in the UK, has also visited Mont St Michel in his Saab, but unfortunately his photos don’t combine the car and the attraction.
