That awesome black Saab 900…..

At Wulf’s test drive of the Turbo X today, SaabUSA brought along the pristine 1985 Saab 900 from the GM Heritage Collection.

This car was restored last year just prior to the Boston Auto Show where the Saab Turbo X made it’s North American debut. There’s some photos of the finished car in Boston here and some photos of the build here and here. It really is something special.

Enjoy the latest pics and click any of them to enlarge.

Saab 900 Wimbledon Edition

I was really pleased to see this Saab ad come up on my Flickr feed today. I’d meant to cover it some time ago but didn’t get around to it.

It’s a Saab special edition that was put together by a dealership in England. Apparently individual dealers used to do this sort of thing from time to time, which must have made for a vast number of special editions over the years.

This one is the Saab 900 Wimbledon Edition. Unfortunately our host at Flickr hasn’t put up an enlarged version, so you’re going to have to press your nose to the screen and squint to read the test (it is legible).

Saab Wimbledon

This special edition in red from Wimbledon Saab and called the Sprint got lower, stiffer springs, an intercooler installed, leather steering wheel and a color coded body kit as well – all before Saab released their own Aero versions with a body kit.

With so many special editions out there, you’re probably wondering why I’d want to post about this one in particular. There’s two notable things here:

1 – The red car you see in the ad above has a body kit designed by a young freelance designer named Lance Cole, who later went on to write the essential Saab 99 and 900: The Complete Story. Lance designed the kit on behalf of a company called Profile, who supplied the kits to Wimbledon Saab. It’s notable that in these early days of bolt-on styling these weren’t actually bolted on. They used resin to attach the panels, so repairs would have been interesting.

2 – The dealership where these cars originated from seem to be my kind of dealer. The Saab 900 Special Editions pages have a page on Wimbledon Saab, and their advertising calls them the “Enthusiast Saab Dealer”. It seems that special editions were the rule rather than the exception there and there’s some great print ads at the link that’ll give you a feel for that.

I wonder if there’s still any of these particular special editions running around?

More Team D including video from the Alcan 5000 rally

As you’ll recall from Swade’s earlier post, Team D are rally rookies driving a 1985 Saab 900 Turbo in the annual Alcan 5000 rally, a 5000-mile drive through the frozen expanses of Western Canada. With the rally complete about a week ago, our brothers-in-arms have been posting additional information, especially a small collection of video clips that presumably they had little time to edit and post while the rally was underway.

This is my favorite of the bunch: A video of the ice slalom on a frozen lake in the Yukon territory:

The Team D Saab did us proud, finishing seventh overall and first in class!

That Avis Commercial

I guessing that those of you outside the US have not seen this advertisment.

Avis is one of the largest car rental companies in the United States. I’m not particularly sold on their service, but that’s another story that is likely best shared in a different forum.

Meant to highlight the high-tech amenities of an Avis automobile, this series of advertisments features the convenience and ease of renting a better car to drive on longer trips. In this case, the upgrade includes a Garmin GPS navigation system that may be included for additional charge with the rental.

Hence the perfection of using the Saab classic 900 — hip enough that the driver cannot be dismissed as a total dweeb, but low-tech enough that the Avis car and the attendant upgrades are seen in stark contrast to the daily driver.

Swade Travels Flickr Run!

It’s a new year, I’ve been on vacation, and I’ve finally gotten through that slug of work that’s stacked up in my e-mail inbox over the holidays and into this week.

For that reason, I apologize that I’ve got little in the way of new Saab news or clever Saab verbiage. But I do have a few interesting photos from Flickr!

One of them is well worth the wait, believe me. But you’ll have to wait until after the break.

First up, we have another Saab recently purchased by our resident Frenchman, Golfhunter. It seems that Jeff can’t keep his checkbook in his pocket whenever vintage Saabs are around. I’ve completely lost count, but it was just over two months ago when I congratulated him on his last purchase. I’m sure that it will look better when he’s through with it, but it already looks pretty good — and those appear to be genuine TRX wheels! Now, if you could only find tires to fit…

Golfhunter 900 5-door

Next, a fine example of a Saab 99 Turbo 2-door in original condition. Our brother-in-arms, Thorstensson, found an unbelievably well-preserved 99 and has obviously maintained it well. Take a look at the Incas. I love Incas. They are a unique part of Saab heritage.

Oh, and the photo is excellent.

Traveller’s Saabs

My Viggen-owning compatriot from Sydney, Richo, is currently skiing around the US. That’s his cover at least. I suspect he’s just trying to pick up chicks in exotic locations, like Wyoming, but that’s just me….

He shot through these photos of a Saab owned by a local lady running a gas station in Jackson Hole. Told her we’d make her famous. See what I mean?

And he also spotted this one on the road somewhere in Utah….

Local Tasmanian lens genius, Stu, recently took a family holiday in New Zealand and sent through a shot of the only Saab he saw whilst he was there. Only one, but a nice one nonetheless.

Ah, travelling……less than two weeks to go!

Brits: Own a unique piece of Saab history!

When you need a little entertainment, there’s always eBay.

Today’s find is a complete burgundy interior from a right-hand-drive classic 900.

When I say complete, I mean that the whole interior is burgundy! The dash (which has a couple of cracks), the dash fascia, the seats, the carpet, the interior panels, everything! You’ll feel completely engulfed in 1985 all over again! It even has the OEM stereo head unit and the speaker grilles are burgundy, too!

Certainly a classic. Since these were not available in North America, I’ve never actually seen one. In fact, the only place I’ve seen a picture of an interior like this is in the European 900 brochures from that era.

Check it out here. It’s currently going for £150.

Update on Saabrina, the electric Saab!

Swade’s post on naming your Saab reminded me to check in on Saabrina, the electric NG900. And, as luck would have it, Mark has posted an update!

Mark is very, very close to completion of this lengthy project, and I must say that he’s done this EV conversion with a great deal of precision and forethought.

Saabrina fans

One great example of his ingenuity in the latest update is Mark’s use of the cabin heat to warm the batteries when necessary, and then when the batteries are too warm, he uses that heat to keep the cabin warm. Very cool!

Mark, we can’t wait!
