Hirsch on Aerodynamics

Here’s a little more Hirsch material.

Hirsch Performance have just released a new aerodynamics package for the 2009 Hirsch Performance edition cars that will be sold in various markets aroud the world. These are Hirsch’s own notes about the new package and they’re good for not only finding out about Hirsch products, but also the importance of aerodynamics and the role played by various parts in the package.

Improving the aerodynamics of the current Saab 9-3 was a real challenge, since the car has excellent aerodynamics already from the factory.

However, for this project Hirsch Performance enjoyed the co-operation and support of Saab’s master aerodynamicist Håkan Danielsson and his team, as well as renowned designer Taras Czornyj from Mutations AB, whose combined experience made it possible to develop a truly exciting aerodynamics package.

The final product range reaches from front splitter to an exclusive – limited edition – carbon fiber body kit for the SAAB 9-3 Performance special edition car.

Form follows function – Design process

The aerodynamics package was designed as a complete set of modifications to improve stability and reduce drag. In addition to the functional benefits, the aerodynamic modifications should also contribute to the car’s dynamic appearance.

During the entire development process, close co-operation between design, aerodynamics and engineering ensure that the end result creates the best possible experience, both when viewing the car from the outside and when driving at high speeds.

The design process started with the sketching phase, trying to get the most distinctive look possible while still integrating with the shape of the original car.

The sketches were then interpreted in clay, to ensure that the shape of each component looks good from all angles.

Once the basic clay design had been approved, the car was scanned using a 3D-Scanner, and the surfaces translated into 3D computer models.

Aerodynamic optimization – Wind tunnel test

Based on the computer models, aerodynamic test parts were produced and specially prepared so that minor adjustments could be made quickly during the wind tunnel testing.

Front splitters were added to reduce air flow under the car and in front of the wheels, thus creating down force. A larger front spoiler was integrated with the lower mesh grille, further reducing air flow under the car while also increasing the cooling air flow for the intercooler. Side skirts were added to reduce wake behind the wheels and keep the air flow under the car from leaking out. In the rear, a diffuser was added under the bumper to direct the air flow slightly upwards, thus reducing the wake behind the car while also improving rear stability.

For the Convertible and SportSedan, enlarged bootlid spoilers also help improve rear stability.

Perhaps the most interesting component, however, is the roof spoiler for the SportCombi, where a Saab innovation from 1961 was put to use again in a modernised form: the air slicer. The top surface of the air-slicing roof spoiler directs the airflow upwards, generating improved rear stability. In addition, an air slot directs a small portion of the airflow down onto the rear screen, thus reversing the semi-stationary vortex behind the car and thereby reducing the wake and the associated aerodynamic drag, while also helping to keep the rear screen clean.

This design was extensively tweaked and tested in the MIRA wind tunnel, to create an optimal combination of drag and stability.

Safety first – Homologation

Once both the design and aerodynamics targets were met, homologation prototypes were produced. All prototypes were installed on cars and sent to RDW in the Netherlands for homologation. At RDW, the parts were examined to verify that they will not influence the safety of the car or the safety of pedestrians in case of a collision.

All aerodynamic parts have successfully passed the homologation tests, and are included in the latest Saab 9-3 whole vehicle type approval, and can therefore be installed in all markets.

Carbon fibre body kit

Hand laminated in high quality carbon fibre and lacquered with a UV-resistant high gloss coating.

The limited edition complete carbon fibre body kit is available exclusively for the Aero trim level. As a sign of authenticity, Hirsch Performance logotypes in aluminium are laminated into the rear side skirt extensions.

The kit is available for all body types; SportSedan, SportCombi and Convertible, and consists of 8 pieces: Front splitters, side skirt extensions front and rear, and rear bumper extensions.

The front splitters direct airflow away from the front wheels. The skirt extensions help separate the airflow under the car from the airflow on the sides, and also reduce the wake behind the wheels, thus reducing lift and aerodynamic drag.

Front splitters for Aero and Vector

Available for both the 9-3 Aero and Vector/Linear front bumpers, front corner splitters were developed to help direct airflow away from the front wheels. The front splitters generate downforce at higher speeds and help to reduce the aerodynamic drag.

The Aero front splitters are available in two versions; hand laminated carbon fibre, as part of the carbon fibre body kit, and as individual components in high-quality PUR.

The Vector/Linear front splitters are available only in high-quality PUR.

The PUR front splitters are delivered primed, and can be painted – either as the designer intended in matte black – or in body colour.

Bootlid spoilers for SportSedan and Convertible

Rear lift forces cause instability at high speeds on sedans and convertibles, and the perfect solution to address this issue is to add a bootlid spoiler that raises the airflow and provides a clear separation point for an optimized wake behind the car.

The Hirsch Performance bootlid spoilers are optimized primarily to improve high speed stability, and therefore they are slightly larger and have a slightly steeper rake to produce optimal aerodynamic results.

The styling is functional and minimalistic with no grooves or decorations. The spoilers are delivered primed, and can be painted – either as the designer intended in two tone with matte black underside and body colour on top – or completely in body colour.

Roof spoiler for SportCombi

Most wing-type roof spoilers trade off aerodynamic drag to achieve better rear stability. The new Hirsch Performance roof spoiler for the Saab 9-3 SportCombi is unique in that through rigorous wind tunnel testing, it was possible to achieve both a reduced drag and improved stability, while in addition keeping the rear screen clean!

The styling continues the smoothly curved wing design theme established with the Hirsch Performance 9-5 roof spoiler.

The roof spoiler is delivered primed, and can be painted – either as the designer intended in two tone with matte black underside and body colour on top – or completely in body colour.

The kit includes brake light extension cables to be used with the existing brake light, which is positioned in the spoiler, and an extension hose and nozzle for the rear screen washer.

Mesh grill

Improved cooling air flow helps keep the engine temperature under control, and improves the performance of the intercooler. Therefore, the Hirsch Performance mesh grill kit has large openings that allow maximum airflow. However, the outer upper grills remains closed like on the original grill, to achieve lower aerodynamic drag, and ensure that splashing water does not enter the engine’s air intake snorkel.

The upper 3-piece grill is available separately, and fits Aero, Vector and Linear cars. The lower grill with integrated spoiler is available only for the Aero trim level.

The mesh grill is produced in injection-molded high-quality UV-stablized ABS, to ensure that the matte black finish remains beautiful for many years, with the best possible resistance against chipping and harsh cleaning agents. As a sign of authenticity, a Hirsch Performance emplem in matte chrome that matches the original grill frame is integrated in the upper grill.

Rear diffuser

With the installation of a diffuser under the rear bumper, the airflow under the car is stabilized and directed upwards, thus improving stability and reducing the wake behind the car.

The Hirsch Performance diffuser features two round openings for either the Saab Original dual exhaust or the Hirsch Performance dual exhaust. The diffuser has been specially designed to fit both the longer SportCombi and the shorter SportSedan/Convertible bumpers, as well as both the Aero trim level and Vector/Linear trim levels. The diffuser is compatible with the Saab Original towing hooks, and features markings for the required cut-out on the inside of the diffuser.

The diffuser is delivered in matte black high-quality UV-stablized ABS. The kit includes rivets for installation. The bumper reflectors (not included in the kit) are moved over from the original bumpers to the diffuser.

Today is Hirsch Performance day

I’ve got a bucketload of stuff to post from Hirsch today. For those who might be new to this site, Hirsch are based in Switzerland and are the only tuning company a Saab owner can use and retain their factory warranty. Essentially, they’re Saab’s in-house tuners, except they’re out of house.

Anyway, I’ll have heaps from Hirsch on site shortly, but these images and the story I want to show you now came up quite unexpectedly.

These photos popped up on a Hirsch-related Flickr account today. Have a peek and then I’ll tell you the story about that white car (as best as I can remember it, at least).

The green car in those photos is Saab Sonett #4. It was the subject of a book a few years ago, where the story of its restoration was told. My copy of that book is currently sitting on (former SaabUSA chief) Bob Sinclair’s desk as he was unfamiliar with the story, too. As I don’t have my copy here, you’ll have to forgive me if some of the details are sketchy, but the basics are as follows:

Saab built just six of these Sonetts and when it was known that they weren’t going into production, they sold a majority of them. The price wasn’t steep as they weren’t considered a valuable car way back then, they were just another registerable vehicle in the test stages.

Sonett #4 was purchased by a guy who didn’t like the Saab body shape, so he removed the green body and crafted his own body to sit on the Sonett’s framework. He called it the Facett (I don’t recall what it means), drove it for a few years and then left it in his yard as a plaything for his young children!

Eventually the car was found by a German guy by the name of Dr Klaus Muller-Ott, who restored the car to its original Sonett condition and published the aforementioned book (note to self: write to Bob and get it back some time).

Recently, the car was purchased from the doctor by Rene Hirsch, owner of Hirsch Performance in Switzerland. Rene Hirsch has a great collection of Saab cars and I’ve got no doubt this is the jewel in the crown.

What I’d forgotten until seeing this story this morning, however, is that they got the Facett body as well. It looks like that’s been restored to prime condition, too. What a fascinating extension to the collection and a great way to fill out the Sonett story.

Here’s a taste of the Hirsch material to come later, and something a little Bizarre as well.

2009 Saab 9-3 Hirsch – German market

After covering it in another article earlier today, I’ve now received fuller details of the 2009 Saab 9-3 Hirsch model for the German market.

This car gets the full Hirsch treatment and reads like a very desireable model that Saab should be marketing everywhere.

To the enhancements, first:

The base car for the Hirsch Performance model is the 2009 Saab 9-3 with 2.8 V6, XWD (with E-LSD) plus the following Hirsch Performance components:
- Upgrade to 300hp
- Mesh grille
- Front splitter
- Stainless steel dual exhaust
- Rear diffuser
- Bootlid spoiler or roof spoiler (bridge spoiler)
- Lowered Suspension
- 345mm Brake
- 19” wheels (diamond black or satin silver)
- Carbon leather dash board
- Carbon leather interior trim set
- Leather door handles, handbrake handle and smart slot cover
- Aluminium pedals

And here’s an outside picture to get you drooling.

Hirsch vehicles are not just about the numbers, which are definitely impressive in this instance. They’re about the seamless integration of factory quality parts to create a truly aggressive yet very driveable vehicle. It’s long been an issue on this website that Hirsch isn’t promoted in all Saab markets and this vehicle is further proof that Hirsch are capable of presenting one heck of a great automobile.

I’d urge anyone who hasn’t done so to seek some seat time in a Hirsched Saab. It really is an experience to remember.

To those of you fortunate enough to have access to Hirsch products, I hope you avail yourselves of this opportunity. Some of the aftermarket products out there are pretty good, but I’m yet to drive another vehicle that was as complete a package as Jeff B’s Saab 9-5 Hirsch.

New Saab performance bits from Hirsch

Hirsch’s newsletter for this July has arrived and once again, it’s full of stuff that makes me want to scream WHY CAN’T WE GET THIS STUFF ALL AROUND THE WORLD???

I mean, seriously, can you think of a good reason why it shouldn’t be available?

For the unfamiliar, Hirsch Performance are located in Switzerland are they’re the only authorised and factory approved tuner for Saab cars. Their products are only available in certain countries, however, with North America and Australia being notable exceptions.

Hirsch have a couple of interesting new things for the lucky ones to consider this month, starting with the full info on their V6 XWD tune:

The XWD system offers excellent traction in all situations. Therefore, we felt that a little more power would be desirable. Developed, tested and certified:

300 hp and 430 Nm
Top speed: 260 km/h
0-100 km/h: 5.3 seconds (Automatic: 5.5 seconds)
80-120 km/h: 6.7 seconds
The performance upgrade kit consists of engine software, intercooler and air intake box.

Ever heard of Taras Czornyj? You mightn’t be familiar with the name, but you’re most likely familiar with his work. He was one of the lead designers on the Saab 9-3 SportCombi and the recent 9-3 facelift for 2008.

He’s not working with Saab at the moment. The last I heard he was teaching and doing a little bit of work with the guys across town at Ovlov. In his spare time he’s been designing some wheels for Hirsch.

These wheels to be exact. They’re a double-six spoke wheel, measuring 19 x 8 inches. Notably, they’re available in two finishes, being Satin Silver and Diamond Black (the latter is apparently quite fetching on a white convertible).

Here they are. Click.

The V6 XWD isn’t the only one to get the tuning treatment. Hirsch also have a groovy tuning package for my favourite engine in the current Saab range – the 2.0T.

The tuning package lifts performance from 210hp to a very zippy 240hp. If you’ve got a 2008 Saab 9-3 2.0T then your performance upgrade will include the Hirsch dual exhaust. 2009 customers will get software only (my guess is because of the XWD).

I’ve promoted the Hirsch carbon leather interior trim previously here at TS. Hirsch are still producing that item, but have also (re)introduced a pure black leather version as well.

That’s the pure black on the left and the carbon leather on the right. The Saab 9-3 dash design is great, but if there’s a criticism of it, it’s that it’s a little too ‘sea-of-plastic’ for a premium vehicle. The Hirsch leather interiors take care of this.

Leather door handles and handbrake/slotcovers are also available to complement the dash kit.

——

I couldn’t imagine having a 9-3 or 9-5, access to Hirsch, and not making use of their stuff. It’s not inexpensive, but geez, it’s good.

Hirsch officially launch their Saab 9-3 2.8 XWD tuning package

Hirsch have finally lifted the covers of their upgrade package for the Saab 9-3 2.8 XWD. This tuning package will suit the Turbo X as well as Aero models with XWD. This tune is obviously for 2008 models, but I’m told that it will be the same package for 2009 models as well.

Using UK prices, the Hirsch tune comes in at GBP1,733.00, which includes VAT but doesn’t include installation. That’s definitely at the high end of the market, but it’s also at the highest end of the quality spectrum, too.

Hirsch XWDThe Hirsch XWD upgrade includes new software as well as a new intercooler and air filter housing. The output of you engine goes from 280hp to 300hp and torque rises from 400Nm to 430Nm. Top speed is still governed, but is lifted from 250km/h to 260km/h.

The tuning packages from Hirsch make for a very, very entertaining Saab. 20hp and 30Nm look like modest gains on paper, but (as always) it’s the way the car delivers the power that matters. With a Hirsch tune, the car becomes more responsive and aggressive when called upon. It’s not just the numbers at the upper limits that change, it’s the way it’s delivered.

Have a look at that dyno chart. The factory XWD tuning delivers maximum torque at 2500rpm. With the Hirsch tune, you get your response much quicker. The old torque max of 400Nm comes online at around 1750rpm and the new maximum of 430Nm kicks in at 2,000rpm, and it’s still carrying more than 400Nm right through to around 5200rpm. It’s a much more effective power band, making for a truly exhilarating drive.

Of course, the biggest thing about tuning your Saab via Hirsch is that you retain your original Saab factory warranty. I’ve heard good things about other tuners and know a lot of people that use their modifications, but only Hirsch allow you to keep your warranty.

If you’re fortunate enough to be in a market where Hirsch can sell you something, then check out their stuff for yourself. It’s the best there is in terms of both performance and support.

Hirsch newsletter for May 2008

The good gentlemen at Hirsch AG have released a newsletter for May.

Here it is, folks….

Satin chrome front grille for the Saab 9-5

The appearance of the bright chrome grill of the new 9-5 has been found not to be to everybody’s taste. With the new satin chrome grille from Hirsch Performance, produced by the same supplier and with the same high quality satin chrome specification as the new 9-3 grille, the front receives a more modern, sporty, understatedly elegant look, that better matches the car’s character.

Hirsch 9-5 grille

The Hirsch Performance satin chrome grille was recently shown at the auto shows in Geneva and Leipzig to critical acclaim. The product was received so well, that it could be introduced to the next model year production.

The Hirsch Perfomance satin chrome grill is available now for all Saab 9-5 MY06 and newer.

——

Stainless steel dual exhaust system for Saab 9-5 1.9TiD MY06 and newer

The new Hirsch Performance dual exhaust system made of stainless steel gives the Saab 9-5 TiD a sporty appearance – a perfect match for example for cars equipped with a 175hp performance upgrade! Carefully tuned mufflers and bass-reflex resonators provide a powerful deep sound without being too loud, and the flow-optimized tubing reduces back pressure, and thus improves the pedal response. With the large dual tailpipes and the corresponding rear skirt, the Saab 9-5 also looks much more powerful.

Hirsch Performance has a new logo, and now also a new vehicle badge

Elegant, premium and well integrated into the Saab car badging. Those were our objectives for our new chromed Hirsch Performance badge, which replaces our well known oval sticker. The new deer head badge, derived from the name “Hirsch”, which means “deer” in German, is the new subtle hint to look for to recognize a Saab with a Hirsch Performance upgrade. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, the way a high performance Saab should be.

The new badges are available for immediate delivery.

Hirsch don’t just do tuning, they do sales as well.

Recently, they took on selling Lamborghinis and it seems they’ve just had their official Lambo launch, showing a little of the old as well as the new. More photos here.

In the same photo-thread there’s this great shot of a very desireable Saab. This green one was recently acquired by Rene Hirsch himself.

I guess GM are totally committed to spreading Cadillac throughout Europe, which is a thought that gives me chills. I personally hope they fail miserably as I believe it’s a colossal waste of resources that would be better spent on Saab.

The proof of the plan? These spyshots of a Cadillac CTS Wagon over at Autoblog.

Cadillacs don’t make me sick. it’s just the unyielding love the GM board have for them that makes me sick. Saab can play this segment in Europe given the right amount of investment.

I can’t recall if there’s been a big showing of the Saab 9-4x in Sweden since it’s debut in Detroit back in January.

It’s on show this weekend at a green gar show called Miljöbilsmässan in Gothenburg this weekend. ctm shot me the link and the news, and was a little surprised that he found this out not from a Saab ad or news item, but by a little news piece at di.se.

I guess now’s as good a time as any to remind you Swedes that all three of Saab’s recent concept vehicles will be on show at the Saab Museum in Trollhattan from May 2-4.

Do Australia have Hirsch access now?

I was checking into comments for the BSR-Turbo-X entry from earlier today and MarkoA mentioned Hirsch’s tuning for the 9-3 TTiD.

I thought I’d lob on over to the Hirsch site and see if there were any details about it. Just in case. FYI, the TTiD tune is “coming soon” and is listed there at 200hp and 420Nm.

But that’s not the reason for this entry…..

Hirsch optionsThe Hirsch website has a new matrix available that supposedly tells you what upgrades are available for your model, and for the country you live in. If you check it out you’ll see that there’s a drop-down box and Australia get a full compliment of 9-3 and 9-5 tuning options (that’s the new 9-3, not the old one).

So what’s going on?

I’ve sent emails to Hirsch and to Saab Oz and hopefully one of them will get back to me soon. It probably won’t be Saab Oz as we have a public holiday here tomorrow.

Hopefully it means that Saab Oz have finally seen the light and decided to at least offer these tuning upgrades as an option to give their customers that little bit more. It’d make sense. They don’t have to freight in or warehouse parts – it’s software only.

Fingers crossed. I’ll let you know as soon as I do.
