Trollhattan Saab has changed!
The site you're viewing now is the original Trollhattan Saab weblog, though it's now an archive only and no new material is posted here. As of February 2009, all new material is posted at our new site - Saabs United.
Please join us at Saabs United and get your daily Saab fix from Saab sources all around the world.
Bilnorge, from Norway, have some new spyshots of the Saab 9-4x undergoing winter testing.
As you can see, Saab have all but given up on disguising the car, with only a few black triangles covering up the true lines of the vehicle.
Looks great! But how does it drive?
The full library of photos (all of which are bigger than this snippet that I’ve cropped for use here) are available at Bilnorge.

Not my cuppa tea but Im sure it will sell fairly well in the US. One thing though. Why has it taken so long to come to market as it looks exactly like the concept shown at Detroit in early 2008?

I agree with you totally zippy. I can understand why they camoflauge the 9-5 but we all know what the 9-4x looks like, so why do they bother?

All I know is that I really hope they have those green tinted lights and the interior! That is what made the concept so cool!

This 9-4x is more important than the new 9-5 for the US. I’ll get one as soon as I can afford one. Let’s hope they can offer it for under $35K.

Ryan at Saabhistory is running an interesting poll on spyphotos. I must say I have to agree with him.

He’s incorrect, Mark.
The photos of the 9-3x that came out yesterday were taken by an agency called Carpix and then sold to several magazines. that’s how the industry works. Ryan’s theorising that all these magazines have their own photogs there. They don’t. They just buy them from the one or two spies that do take the trouble to go up there. I got an email Christmas card from one of the Carpix guys back in December
There’s only one set of photos that I know of that have been early release from Saab. The rest are from photo agencies.
it doesn’t make for a good conspiracy and I’m sure Saab would be more secretive if they wanted to (ref the disguising on the 9-5) but I think they’ve approached it pretty honestly. i.e. the 94x is pretty much known so heavy camo isn’t needed. the 9-3x is pretty much known and based on an existing model – again, no need for heavy camo.
The 9-5 is a different matter and Saab have treated it accordingly.

The 9-4X is looking quite handsome. I am with Wulf on that, it will be much more important to Saab’s success in the U.S. than the new 9-5, not to mention quite likely a lot more profitable, too.
You look at the Jan. 09 sales figures, you’d see Saab sold as many 9-7Xs as they did 9-5s. Yeah, the former is by now considered ancient, but let’s not forget the 9-7X is a full-blown gas guzzler. So I could totally see a proper cross-over such as the 9-4X moving 1,000+ units a month in the U.S. by itself.
It’s a cash cow guys.

Wow, is it just me or do the proportions of the car look a whole lot better with this one? I really don’t get it. Maybe having the side sills in black makes it look less tall or something, but it just looks sleeker from the side. I wonder what they’re going to do about that, whether the colors will be two-toned, light upper dark under or vice versa. I bet the 9-3x has painted sills too. The wheels are going to be crucial to this thing looking hot. I’m excited.

Quite handsome? Not sure about that one. I guess beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder? Seriously I’m sure the new 9-5 will be much easier on the eye. Perhaps that comment someone made about people in America only wanting to drive latter day Model Ts is true? In that case Saab could do well to offer the 9-4x only in black…

This thing looks amazing and like already mentioned it will do wonders for them in the US.

Just look at the side profile, especially the front half. That’s definitely Saab.
By the time we can afford another car my wife will be able to buy a CPO 9-4x that will suit her needs so much better than some 4Runner or Xterra. Imagine my delight.

I think this can be a real incomemachine in the US. In Europe , it better come with small efficent enginenes, because of heavy taxing. The car is growing on me, and I am geting hopeful…

MArk,
We only got to see 2/3rd of it, unfortunately. The film snapped in the projector! We got passes to go back again, which i think we’ll use to see something else and we’ll just watch Gran Torino in full on DVD when it comes out.
The first 2/3rds are good, though. Clint Eastwood makes a great grump.

I have to say I think it looks great and the best is yet to be revealed! Just wait until you see the first pictures of the rear with the actual tail lamps.. For the US market I think this vehicle will be very important. However, for Europe I don´t see it moving that much volume.

Regarding these pictures of the 9-4X, a coupe of things do seem a bit strange…
1. Test car is driving towards the “spy”, and since the driver is clearly hiding his face he must be aware of the camera.
2. What do we do after passing a roadside spy? Oh yes, we stop and make a 3-point turn…
I have a feeling the test driver did not exactly do his outmost to escape the camera…

Maybe we are starting to see the Apple/SAAB synergies here. Is this SAAB’s next OV as opposed to OS – Code named “Snow-Leopard”??
I’ve always liked the 9-4x Just wish it had 7-seats.

I am really liking this the more that I see it for sure. I just hope as Wulf said earlier that Saab can price this accordingly so that it is affordable to those that want one. I also wouldn’t mind seeing Saab start offering a base model CUV for $30-35 and then a more upscale and tuned Sport model with say a TT DI 6cyl as a means to compete on entry level as an alternative to a Porsche Cayenne. For a cross over it looks pretty sporty from the rear quarter panel angle. More so like a car than a truck, which is what I really like the most about it.

any one else see alot of the 9-3x concept in this car? ( i mean the one from a few years back of course)

// Feb 7, 2009 at 12:21 am
I have to agree Chris, it does seem to resemble the stance and look a lot of where that concept was going. I really do hope that instead of looking at the greatest profit margin on these, that Saab can make them affordable to those of us that can’t afford a new car starting in the 40k range. I know inflation and a bunch of other factors have made it the reasoning why cars cost so much these days. But why is it ok for cars to start at a price range of 30k. It is ridiculous when you think about it. Some of thing that we have grown accustom to paying for and the amounts in this day and age are crazy.

Still no production tail-lights in this test vehicle.
I agree with you Swade, would definitly be a treat to hear from someone who has drove a 9-4X.

I agree there should be a base model in the range of $30k-35K. Audi just priced the Q5 with a V6 for $38k and Volvo priced their XC60 V6 for $37k, both are overpriced IMO because they’re more compact than midsized. Lexus the same week announced that their all new larger and probably more efficient RX350 will be priced from $36k and anyone familiar with Lexus knows most features come standard. Saab should take advantage of this being built in Mexico and price it slightly lower than the competition. I know for sure I’d buy one if priced right.

Hi PhilP10,
if the data from ctm is correct, the car is 4922 mm long, it means longer than a BMW X5 but slightly shorte than a Q7. The 9-4X will compete with X5 Q7 XC90 Cayenne, Touareg and the likes not with the baby ones X3 Q5 XC60 So It hink it will be priced like the other cars in its segment.

That’s weird. I wonder why it doesn’t feature a third row of seats and 260hp won’t be enough if that’s the case. I’ll have to spend my money elsewhere..

// Feb 8, 2009 at 9:16 pm
PhilP10 : The 9-4x will be a 5-seater only. It’s also expected that a 300hp version will be offered however; I don’t understand why you think 260hp isn’t enough?
