Swedish tuning house BSR have just announced a cut in price for many of their older tuning modules, with tunes for some 1998 to 2003 model cars being reduced by up to around 25%.

If you’re unfamiliar with BSR’s tuning efforts, they’re just about the easiest tune to implement. There’s no swapping of ECUs, just a small Portable Program Carrier unit (PPC) that you plug into your car. The PPC stores your car’s original tune and the loads up it’s own modified tune, giving you an instant boost in power and torque. What’s more, the process is reversible and you can restore your vehicle to original factory tune just by plugging the PPC back in again. And you can do this as often as you wish.

From the announcement on their website:

As BSR is continously developing upgrade softwares for new car models, we are happy to announce a significant discount for the BSR PPC for older cars. Volvo, Saab, Opel, Audi, Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda 1998-2003 all have major discounts.

Some examples:

- Saab 9-3 T7 Aero New price 5.900 SEK (Old price 7.900 SEK)
- Saab 9-5 2.0t 1998-2001 New price 5.900 SEK (Old price 7.900 SEK)
- Volvo S60 2.4T New price 6.900 SEK (Old price 7.900 SEK)

Instead of buying a new car, you can upgrade the car you currently own with the markets best tuning technology at a bargain price.

As usual, the BSR PPC offers the possibility to swap between stock software and tuned software and software upgrades continue to take place over the Internet as usual.

Head on over to BSR’s website and the product list will give you an idea of which Saab tuning PPCs are for sale.

If you’ve not driven in a tuned Saab before then I highly recommend you seek one out and go for a spin. The great thing about turbocharged cars is that they respond to chip tuning much better than normally aspirated cars. The difference it makes is unbelievable.

For example – I chip tuned my Alfa Romeo 33. It’s got a 1.7 litre 16 valve engine. That tune gave me around an extra 10 horsepower.

The BSR tune available for the 2.0T Trionic5 will give it’s original 154hp engine around 70 extra horsepower, not to mention a handy 109Nm boost in torque. If only a tune like that was available for my Monte Carlo!

Check ‘em out. You’ll never believe how much it can change your daily drive.

Is there any way to any any more power from a classic 900 with something like this??

Not from a plug-in unit like BSR. For the C900 you’re looking at something more like an ECU swap. Saab made their famous Red Box ECU’s for a while and they pop up for sale every now and then. I think some aftermarket places still do 900 tuning, too. Try Abbott Racing in the UK or Jak Stoll in the US.

900 tuners are becoming rarer, though, as the cars become rarer themselves. I didn’t dare tune mine bacause if I’d done in the gearbox, there’s barely any replacement gearboxes here in Australia.

With the BSR T5 kits you can take the Monte out to 241Hp / 380Nm. Push it harder than that and you’ll need to look at Abbot Viggen rescue kits or similar. I have thought about it, but it’s beyond my budget at the moment.

Mark, I can’t see a BSR PPC for the monte on their pages. The only 2.0 T5 kit I saw was for a 154hp version, or can that be used on the 204R as well?

It’s a while off before I could do something like this anyway, but it’d be good to know.

The B204R/ 200Bhp is quite rare but similar to the B204/ 185Bhp version. The 154Bhp version is the LPT car. I think I researched it before, but I’m sure there was a BSR version we could use, probably stages 2 and 3? You could also look at the Elkparts kits, they suit the 200Bhp motor exactly, but I think the postage on the exhaust might be a bit pricey for stage 2 and 3!

Does this mean that Elkparts will price-match BSR?

154bhp and 200bhp, same base engine but uprated wastegate actuator. Look out for 1 or 2 lambda probes, if you have 1 you can’t use software that is made for 2 :)

@ Bernard – Yes I agree. For my 2002 9-3 SE, quotes on BSR’s site show the Stage 1 kit is 369 Euros (CAN$585) while Elkparts is CAN$857 ! That is a little short of competitive pricing.

FYI, I emailed Elkparts, and they wrote back to say that they will be updating their pricing this week. They did not get any advance notice of the price change from BSR.

Just to let you know, I am still awaiting pricing from BSR’s UK distributor.

It appears that BSR was so keen to tell it’s retail customers about the pricing update that it did not ensure that all it’s distributors and retailers knew what the arrangements were!

As soon as we have correct pricing, our website will be updated.

I totally agree that a Saab is much better tuned…

I used a tuning kit from DTE Diesel Tuning…
