Look at this as a business decision rather than as a Saab fan!!
The product is average at best and sells few units worldwide.
There are few dealers to pay off if you have to close the "manufacturer".
There are no new models to be released during the next few years.
It lost (Saab) $500 million dollars last year and it will lose more this year.
Sales are down 30-40%
Other than a very small hardcore ( who in all honesty don't by Saab's new in the main) no one really cares.
It is a polite way to try and sell / get rid of stock until the axe comes down.
Even if Sweden pay in the short term the company is hemmoraging money and realistically there is no way forward that would interest an other manufacturer.

If you asked the average man in the street Saab going is sadly not an issue in the way that Audi , Merc or BMW would be .
Gm have mismanaged Saab and may have to kill it to keep afloat.

Turbin, "under review" is GM corporate BS-talk and stand for "for sale".

Or, unfortunately, closure. EnG

Troll96, they have probably already stolen most of Saab's technological know-how through GME. Saab was stripped naked by means of "integration".

But I remain optimistic through all this. Somehow, I feel GM already has a buyer for Saab. They may have to sell it for less than they could've fetched a couple of years from now, but their whole life is in the balance.

And to think how once upon a time this was the mightiest corporation in the world.

Notice how GM plans to increase its emphasis on flex-fuel cars, hybrid technology, turbocharging and 4 cylinder engines. So, of course, Saab has to get the ax. Am I missing something here?

The following is a very saddening but sensible argument from TopGear:

"[Saab & Volvo] just distract management from healing the sickness at the hearts of the main companies back in Detroit.

Trouble is, they won’t be able to unshackle themselves any time soon. These things take months. GM has already had Hummer on the block for most of 2008 with no buyer. It took months and months for Ford to sell off Jaguar Land Rover.

First, a buyer has to be found. And at the moment the main aim of every car company, including the ones that look healthy, is to spend as little money as possible. Buying Volvo or Saab involves spending money so which car company would go for it?

...

And as for Saab, I’d say it’s more likely that GM will close it down than successfully sell it. Because if GM is to secure Federal aid, it will have to show it’s ready to swing the axe big-time. Why should Congress mind if it’s Swedes who suffer?"

OK Sold, fine, but to whom? Who did they sell it to? You know what I think, I think this hole sale was planned along time ago, and GM pulled the wool over everyone's eyes to conceal their plan. Saab hasn't made much money under GM but one thing is for sure, Cadillac BLS and a few other models are rip offs from engineers in Trollhatten and Swedish R & D, I have no doubt. I am freak en pissed!!

GM is thinking very short term. Which is sad.

Why GMC isn't under review, just shows that GM really is not thinking. Yes. Its their 2nd biggest seller and is profitable. BUT. Chevrolet sells the EXACT same thing, and the market the GMC is catering to, is shrinking. GM does not need two brands to sell the same thing in a dying market.

Pontiac being moved to a niche brand. It already is a niche brand, how can it get any smaller? And there is no point to have a "performance" brand. Each brand under GM has a "performance" line.
           Cadillac - V
           Buick - Ultra
           Chevy - SS
           Saturn - Red Line
Saab - Aero (or Viggen truly)
GMC - Denali (Its not really performance, but more luxurious (ha.) and usually an upgraded engine.
           Pontiac - GXP
           Hummer - Alpha

Pontiac needs to die. If holden wants to export to the US still, do as Chevy or Buick.

Apparantly Buick is going to streamline with Buick China. Everything will be done in Buick China, and a skeleton crew in NA, to maybe add some Ventiports. Thats fine. But I'm not holding my breath. GM said the same thing about Saturn and Opel, and look at that mess.

There was another report that Buick and Opel were also streamlining. I can see that also. Buick China already does sell rebadged Opels.

That leaves Saturn out in the cold. Fine. Kill it.

Hummer is a goner, if a buyer is ever found.

Leaving Chevy, Buick, Cadillac...and Saab.

Saab is the only semi-global brand, yet GM wants to get rid of it. We all know how well Cadillac is recieved in Europe. Saab has won almost every year, best concept rewards. The potential is huge there. Yet Gm is too short sighted to see it.

And Saab changing hands all depends if a buyer can be found. Ford ackowledged it had been trying to sell Volvo for months now, and there is no buyer. Volvo is a healthier brand, that is also less integrated into Ford than GM and Saab. If Volvo can't be sold, Saab can't either.

My little rant...I need to be working on my design final. Ugh.

If GM has a buyer, it is wise to announce the "strategic review" because that will help induce the US Congress to provide bailout money. If not, then GM is just spreading FUD, which will depress Saab sales even further. A weakened Saab that is made to look weaker still cannot be more enticing for a corporate suitor, or can it? (It might if the "brand" were sold w/o any of its industrial underpinnings to someone who wanted to start over elsewhere.)

I see what you mean guys..... there isn't really that much to go on as to what GM is actually going to do and what "strategic review" actually means in Lehman's Terms. Hopefully someone could spread some lights on this for me who is in the industry.

It's certainly going to a interesting few weeks to see how the Government see these options and whether they will give the money to GM.... from what it says over at AutoBlog they obviously need the money desperately soon.
