It seems GM are selling off the family jewels now!
Jalopnik have learned that General Motors plan to sell off a number of historic vehicles from its corporate collection at the Barrett Jackson auctions in Arizona early next year. These vehicles are probably considered to be some of the ‘lesser’ models from the GM Heritage Collection, but take a look at the list and it’s still a pretty impressive colletion.
The only Saab on the list is this one – the 1995 Saab 900 SE raced at Pikes Peak in that year. I don’t think it had the success that Per Eklund had later on in the Viggen, but it probably paved a little of that road for him.

It’s very tempting, eh?
Seriously, it can’t be that high on many prospective auction-watchers’ lists. How much could it go for?
Hmmmmmm. Don’t know if it can bump the Datsun off my plans, but……
I hope someone we know buys it. It’d be good to keep it in the family. Maybe the Saab Turbo Club of Sweden could pass the hat around?

Thanks NineTwoX!!!

To the non-Saab ethusiast, it wouldn’t hold much value. Just searching through Barrett-Jackson’s previous auctions, they have sold a total of two Saabs. Both of them were Saab Sonnett IIIs and the last one sold for $1700 in 2001. IMO, Barrett-Jackson is the wrong venue to sell anything Saab and I think a Saab ethusiast could get this vehicle for a steal.

Pollhattansaab time!
I’m guessing between $50k-$60k, considering
what a few Saab enthusiasts paid for the TurboX!
I enjoy watching the Barrett Jackson auction on
our Speed Network. They give a ‘lil history
with the featured vehicles. I’m wondering if
this Pikes Peak racer will be a “featured vehicle”?
And if so:
will they mention “quirky” in the description?
And/or “torque steer”?

I’ve tried to find some information about this vehicle and not much is out there. I know that EnG was able to drive it as per a previous TS post. What is all modified on this vehicle?

Why sell it? Can’t they just send it to Trollhättan were it can get a new life at the museum and be used at track days?
I think this sale is to keep the light at the end of the tunnel on for a few minutes longer – SW

It is a sign. Be prepared.
Saab as a brand will be sold close after this auction.
It is a teaser for GM to test what price tag the whole Saab (brand, plant and some of the staff) should get …
.
No serious. Never knew about this one. Indeed, certainly not half as purposeful looking as Eklunds mean machines. Whoever buys it, should give it the TLC needed. But seeing it in action at events would be better then just store it behind closed doors. Anyone knows more details about the technical aspects ?

Maybe some ‘well heeled’ Saab enthusiast can buy the car and donate it to the Saab Museum?

…or drive the wheels off it! Seems like one hell of a car.

I recall an amazing video of the pikes peak run in this car – shot from an on-board camera. Can you dig this up swade?

Pete, the vid you’re referring to is probably the AWD 9-3 Vig in 2002, have it on my i-pod as well as the 2000 wrap-up. Awesome edge of the seat stuff, repeat viewing mandatory. Don’t know that anybody around has a vid of the 900 effort.

Here’s the link for the 2000 effort. Crazy stuff, check Per’s wheel and shifter action. The Saab logo at the end with the sinister music is as cool as, as are the team Vig logoed shirts. Why did GM/Saab drop the ball so bad after this, was it all the ‘torque steering monster’ reviews??

I have checked the car listing at the auction but couldn’t find the 900 Pikes Peak
Does anyone have the direct link to this car in the auction?

Nine Two X: To answer your question, this car is modified with an interior roll cage which makes it fairly difficult to enter and exit. It has only front racing buckets which means if you are bigger than about a 34-36″ waist, forget it! No rear seats.
As for the mechanicals, it has additional boost (probably an uprated ECU, too), I think that the A/C was stripped, it had larger brakes (I think) and a different set of springs and shocks. Other than that it was pretty much an NG900.
As an afterthought, I’m not 100% sure that it still has the smog equipment required to make it road legal in the US.

Swade should start a poll as to whether this is the least desirable resident of the GM Heritage Collection…
I would kill for the orange Sonett should the GM Heritage Collection ever put that one up for sale. I also love the 99s, C900s, and even the 93s and 95. But the NG900? meh. The only contender I can think of for least desirable would possibly be the 9-2X Aero though that has some value as an oddity…

So what do people think that Saab will go for? I got an extra bay in my garage..not exactly a hole burning in my pocket but that’s a cool car.
I see the ultimate Saab in that GM site…the 1990 900 Turbo SPG…what a car…OMG…sheesh…practically give my left one for that thing.

The Pike’s Peak Saab is not in the current car list at barrett-jackson.com, so it looks like GM may not be selling it.
I guess I will have to look for a different track day Saab…

Some 200 of GM’s one-off and historic models will be sold at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., to raise what amounts to pocket change for the struggling giant and to manage GM’s fleet of historic and unique vehicles. The auction runs from Sunday through Jan. 18.
