Trollhattan Saab has changed!
The site you're viewing now is the original Trollhattan Saab weblog, though it's now an archive only and no new material is posted here. As of February 2009, all new material is posted at our new site - Saabs United.

Well, it’s at least a month late, but never late than never, right? For some time I’ve had the notion to create a mug. This is a design that we would all chuckle at, something that is authentic, something that is truly Saab.

It’s finally online at my Carepress shop, the proceeds of which will go to this site just as anything else that Swade or I do. Click through to find out what I’ve come up with!

Check it out: a mug that mimics the official US-branded Saab Hi-M two-stroke oil can!

I reasonably pleased with the outcome — I didn’t want to post this until I’d actually ordered one and seen the results myself. Of course, you can’t make the printing chrome as in the original (see below for that), and the original uses a very non-standard version of the Saab airplane logo which I didn’t use. I think that overall it looks pretty good for the first time to design a mug.

You may buy them here.

This is the model and inspiration.

A word about Cafepress — I’ve not logged into the account in over a year (really), and I’ve actually sold several shirts in the ensuing months. Unfortunately, most of them have been at zero mark up so I’ve not made a dime, but I have a few dollars in the kitty to contribute to Swade’s on going venture here. So, for everyone bemoaning the fleeting nature of the internet, there’s another like me that has a sort of odd permanence. Strange.

Merry Christmas!

    Great mug! Cool jet graphic.

I’ve been shovelling snow every day since Friday. Of all my various winter hats, my Saab ski cap always works best for a four hour stint outside. Made by Stowe Woolens (Vermont)with non-itch hem, it is now 20+ years old because it was a post-sale promotion in 1987. Just came in the mail…along with a Saab logo coffee mug.

Stowe Woolens seems to have run afoul of home worker laws at some point, because now their products seem to be gently used collectibles. The dilemma of a durable, functional, long-lived product made by someone who cares.

COOL! Just a thought: maybe it would make sense to change the volume number to match that of the mug. You know, to avoid confusion on early mornings before adding caffeine.

Not a dilemma until you loose it or it breaks!

Awesome, thanks Eggs! That’s almost bringing tears to my eyes. I think I’ll order 3, seems like an appropriate stroker number.

Thanks, all! It’s fun to put these things together sometimes. It’s also strange to see just how different things were then and are now. I tried to be true to the original, which meant putting the “Hi-M” lettering a little off-center in the gold band and making the dot on the “i” a little bigger than it should be, etc. That stuff would be perfectly placed on today’s packaging.

I’m ordering one for my wife right now (I’m not much of a coffee drinker)! Though I’ve never owned a two-stroke Saab, I remember seeing a can of oil stored in the engine bay (I believe) and in the interior of one of the GM Heritage Collection two-strokers. I don’t remember that oil being Saab branded, but these mugs are too cool to pass-up. Good work, Eggs.
