Saab sales, sales and more sales

Kicking tires has some info on the GM Red Tag sale that’s currently going on in the US. There’s some big money off selected Saab vehicles, though the most popular model, the 2.0T sees a comparatively modest reduction:

# 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero SportCombi
MSRP: $36,995
Red Tag Sale Price: $31,143
Savings: $5,852

# 2008 Saab 9-5 Aero Sport sedan
MSRP: $39,480
Red Tag Sale Price: $32,719
Savings: $6,761

# 2009 Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan 2.0T Touring
MSRP: $31,135
Red Tag Sale Price: $28,243
Savings: $2,892

# 2009 Saab 9-5 Aero Sport sedan
MSRP: $42,200
Red Tag Sale Price: $38,569

One vehicle they haven’t mentioned, which apparently IS covered by the Red Tag event, is the Turbo X. And according to this screen capture from David W, you can pick one up pretty cheap.

Of course, you should check out the Red Tag deals available in your area before taking these as gospel.

All that’s pretty good, but here’s the deal that fascinates me the most today.

We heard some time ago – I think it was early this year – that there were a bunch of Saab 9-2x’s sitting in a warehouse somewhere. GM simply cancelled the car and I guess the decision was never made about who owned the leftovers, GM or Subaru.

Nevitz has tracked down what might be one of those vehicles for sale. It’s a Midnight Black 2005 Saab 9-2x Aero. It’s a manual and it only has 62 miles on the clock.

Warehoused Vehicle!!! Still Brand New!!! LOADED! Original MSRP: $30,195, Aero Model!!! 230 Horsepower Turbo Charged Boxer Engine – Re-Skinned Subaru WRX Wagon! GM-Owned Vehicle purchased back from other dealer, warehoused by General Motors until able to re-sell to us!

Unfortunately there’s no photo, but the car is here at Delaware Cadillac Saab.

And no, I never thought I’d see the day again where I’d be excited about a 9-2x being for sale, but this is kinda interesting.

  1. Actually, I think that 9-2x is a bit of a ripoff. People were saying the impreza was a better deal back then (when it was new)… well now you can get the 2009 WRX with nearly 270 hp for about 2k more…

I’d pay 18 for that thing… if even that much.

  2. Having 180,000 miles on my 96′ Subaru Impreza, I’d recommend that car to anyone.

But…$23k is still WAY to much for a (4 year) old car. Forget what people think it’s worth, it’s more about what else 23k can get you.

The good news is, when GM dies, you can bring it to a Subaru dealer!

  3. I still say it’s a steal. The original in-service date on that 9-2X is 10-25-2007. That means it has the Certified Pre-Owned Warranty through 10-25-2013 or 100,000 miles (if that dealer isn’t guilty of false-advertising). So there are still 4yrs and 50 weeks or 99,938 miles left on the warranty. It should still get the scheduled maintenance for free until 10-25-2009 as well.

  4. I’d probably take it Pete. At least it’s old school Impreza, not that new one.

KDSaab, I wonder where you’d get them from. It’s still the best looking WRX ever made.

  5. Guess some stories must be too juicy to be confronted with the truth… Not knowing about this particular car, there’s never been such a thing like a significant amount of 9-2X leftovers in inventory. Everybody familiar with this car knows why: the 9-2X is simply a good quality product that came wth first class warranty, Consumer Reports Recommended Buy and IIHS Top Safety Pick Gold Award etcetera. Over just two model years until the relationship with FHI came to an end, we sold nearly 10,300 vehicles to generally very satisfied customers in the U.S. and Canada. As a matter of course, Saab USA has a 9-2X in the heritage collection which has been on display at several Owners Conventions. It is a 2005 Aero in smoke silver, well-used as a long term test car by California-based European Car magazine and upfitted with a decent list of performance parts. Definitely a keeper!

  6. Should I be surprised that the Turbo-X, a special limited-edition car limited to only 600 copies in the U.S. would not only still be available, but actually be heavily discounted six months after hitting dealer lots? Talk about mis-judging your market…

  7. I read the complaints re: Village Saab online prior to buying a 9-3 from them. Their price was significantly lower than any of the other Saab dealerships around here. That being said, I definitely went into the purchase with my eyes open… But to be honest, I haven’t had any issues with them in the 3 years I’ve owned my 9-3. I may be the exception.

  8. 1985 Gripen –

I don’t think that Saab misjudged the market. Rather, the bottom fell out of the automotive sales industry. When Lexus is offering 0.9% interest on their model range to move cars – every marque is suffering and trying to move inventory (a friend just bought a new BMW 5 series with 1.9% interest)…. People are just not buying.

I do have to say that I wish I had waited to buy my TurboX as I could have seen a significant “red tag” savings – but then again there would be no guarantee that it would still be there with the options I wanted (manual with everything). Currently there is only 1 TurboX left for sale here in Texas – which is at Roger Beasley Saab in Austin. It is a manual and has none of the add-on options, and has been on the lot since July when I bought my car. They did, however, sell the other two TurboX’s they had (1 to me) and the Sewell Group in Dallas has sold all four of theirs.
