I have one of those early color matched 1985 SPG's--black panels with black paint, and, well, I wouldn't say they don't match; makes for a more solid looking car, in my opinion. Have not seen another one like it. I am waiting for my issue of the Hemmings Article to arrive--will check for more details. Any Saab fans who want to see what a color matched 1985 SPG looks like feel free to e-mail me and I'll shoot you some pictures. The car is immaculate--no rust, no accidents--leather is worn, though (what else is new?). Was imported back in 1984 and modified to meet California standards. Has never seen snow!

Turbo:

I don't have the VIN readily available. I probably have some paperwork somewhere that shows the number and I'll dig it up when I can. Thanks for the input, that car was perfect. I really wish that I still had it.

Don't be a stranger. Read TS!

eggs,

Do you know the vin and series number of your old CE? I maintain the Saab Commemorative Edition Registry (www.saabce.com), If you remember it, check the registry and see if it'e current owner may have registered it. If it's not there, but you have the info, let me know so I can update the master VIN list.

The CE did come with the SPG suspension. It did not come with the Aero body panels. There are several cars in the registry with them on, but they were later additions. I own a '93 Comm Ed and a '94 Comm Ed convertible. Love the cars!!

I'm a friend of the author of the Hemmings article. Him and one of his colleagues there at Hemmings are classic 900 owners. He was very commited to the writeup, and it shows. I'm glad to see it getting the attention it's getting.

Eggs,
It looks like the '93 CE came without the SPG lower fairings. It also looks like yours wasn't the only one to have had it added. It's a popular alteration to other C900s.

Cheers,
~Peter

Eggs, thanks for the write-up! After all these years the SPG is still my favorite Saab of all time. I saw a beautiful (and what seemed to be a perfectly maintained) Edwardian grey SPG on the road a few days ago and was struck by how modern and distinctive the design still looks. It's a work of art!

PG: I bought my 1993 Commemorative Edition 900 from a tiny Saab dealer in Knoxville, Tennessee at two years of age. It had the fairings identical to the SPG. The car was so new I assumed that it came that way. I could be wrong, the dealer or previous owner may have modified it. I know that the CE had the SPG suspension or at least most of it. It was two inches lower than the previous turbos.

It would bear some research to determine the exact specifications.

I'll look into that.

Andy, I'm with Eggs on this one. I like the look of the interior when the dash and seats match up nicely. Not that the red/tan combo is bad, but I like the dark gray.

Eggs, did the Commemorative Editions have the lower fairing work that SPGs had? I thought they had standard C900 door/rocker treatment. And, what suspension did they have compared to the SPG? I thought that they got Turbo suspension, but not SPG. Can you confirm? I do like the wheels they came with though.

Anyway, give me a Beryl Green SPG. Sweet cars.

Eggs,

I was with you the entire article except for one statement:

"5. Red 900’s look a LOT better with the Buffalo Grey interior rather than the Sierra Tan."

What were you thinking, man? Red with tan was the best! I had that in my 1990 900S and it looked real good. In fact, I liked it so much that I still have the back seat in my basement.

Lance: You are correct. Passive restraints were a US thing. We got that wheel and those silly motorized seat belts as on my first 900.

Zippy: You are going to hate me for this, but I have driven that very car.

Moving to a country that drives on the other side of the road, meant that I was pretty much (reluctantly) required to sell my 1988 SPG. I'm almost as happy with my c900i, almost but not quite because the SPG symbolized the apogee of c900 development.
