This weekend is the biggest weekend on the Australian motor racing calendar. The grand prix might have the glamour, and the bikes might have the raw danger, but it’s the V8 Supercars and the Mount Panorama racing circuit at Bathurst that captures the hearts and minds of most Aussie petrol heads.

Looks like I’ll be logging some time in front of the Bravia this weekend.

Bathurst is always a dramatic event. It’s a marathon that goes for 1000 kilometers, That’s 161 laps of the mountain. The ultimate endurance race. Amazingly, after around 8 or so hours and 1000 kilometers, it can often come down to just seconds between the cars.

A 1,000 kilometer race being dramatic? Well, aside from the racing, the pit strategies, the normal stuff that goes with running big cars at fast speeds, there’s also the unexpected stuff. Like the kangaroo:

Cycling goes hip with Rock Racing. Another 9-3 SportCombi in team colors.

It seems as if the Combi is becoming a vehicle of choice rather than just a sponsorship deal. And it’s good to see.

——

Paul H of Saab 900 Special Editions fame (where are they now, Paul?) seems to have done wonders with the finish on his 900 Convertible. He’s got a car detailing section at that link, which I’ll probably consult a little as I think about preparing mt 900 Aero.

——

And here’s a wierd one, spotted on Flickr.

The owner calls it a Saab 9900. It’s actually a 1972 Saab 99 with bits of a 1988 Saab 900 stuck on and a Saab EV-1 concept car look to it.

Any further info would be welcome.

I’m gonna say the inspiration for that 900 was Porsche’s 944.

I called my 1994 900 with many 9-3 parts on it a 993. Badged it with 9-3 badges as 993, too. “Nine hundred nine three” Not to confuse it with the Porsche 911 variant!!

I like the 9900, except for the slammed look and the ridiculous nose.

I would love to see you Bathurst race again, it never gets aired up here, not on my television anyway.

The 9-3 Sport Combi just looks so great, I can’t believe it hasn’t sold better! Who can’t help fall in lust with that front-end?

And I’ve got to say, the 9900 looks awesome from behind! A little 944-esque, but cool nonetheless. The front, however… If the owner wants to give it to away, I’ll be at his resque.

    Whoa a batmobile?

Who would do such a thing against a car…

Thanks for showing off my shiny convertible bonnet :)
There’s a lot more like that on my website and in my gallery: http://www.pjgh.co.uk/gallery

… as for the Special Editions … well, I went through a similar crisis at about the same time you did Swade. Sorry guys. I know the website was well-loved and a great resource for many people, but it was taking too much time and there was a “straw that broke the camel’s back” incident with yet another legal threat. I had to remove the lot in order to tighten it up and ensure there could be no further comeback. At some point, I’ll get it back online but TBH, I’d rather pass it onto someone else. Any takers?
