Wednesday Snippets

Robin M, our unofficial Saab ambassador in the UK, has just used a self-publishing service on the web to put together a book on his Saab Festival 2007 experience.

In trying to keep things simple, Robin and I agreed that this could also be a pretty good option for the Saab Pride of Ownership book I wanted to do after the competition finished early this year.

Take a look at Robin’s and see what you think. I’m picturing photo(s) on one page with text relating to the car on the facing page. A two-page spread per car/story.

——

Want to be part of the resurrection of a long-time motoring institution that’s deemed by many to have lost it’s way?

No, it’s not GM. Car and Driver are hiring.

——

But GM are in the news today (as always) and it’s a bit of a shocker, too.

Is this an indication of just how desperate things are becoming there? Does the company really have a future beyond the next 18 months?

They’re selling the Renaissance Center in a bid to raise around $500 million.

If you’re all cashed up at the moment, I reckon about $450mil would get it. Of course, you’d then have to visit Detroit occasionally to look at it, but….

——

The pain car companies are feeling now that no-one can borrow money to buy their wares is quite extroardinary, actually.

Click here to check out the list of companies that are going to shut off production in various parts of the world, at least for a short period. Only Porsche seems to be chugging them out at full capacity.

The big question - will an automaker collapse in the next 12-18 months the way the banks have been falling over in recent times?

——

Turbin made a good point via email earlier this morning: there’s been little, if any, decent coverage of the Saab Turbo X here in Australia.

In fact, I’d say Joe Lobo’s review of his own Turbo X is the most comprehensive collection of thoughts about the car to come out of Oz so far.

——

I have been named online as someone’s Arch Nemesis. I should put that on my business card. Steven Wade: Blogger, Arch Nemesis.

Mmmwuuuuuuhahahahahhhhhh!

Seriously?

——

Speaking of Turbo X reviews, here’s one on video from Adam B in Texas. It’s mostly an intro piece suited to those who are unfamiliar with the car, but there’s a few good points in there worth seeing. One is the comment about the stability control switching, and another notable is that exhaust note when heard from the back - magnificent.

Actually, the exhuast comments in this story are quite interesting. Some owners love it. Some owners are annoyed by how loud it is. Adam thinks it’s not loud enough.

It’d be an awfully boring world if we all agreed on everything. Click here to see Adam’s full catalog of video reviews.

It’s too bad they’re planning to lease the RenCen from anyone they sell it to. I’ve never been to the RenCen, but I’ve heard widespread word-of-mouth that Detroit is not the best city to live in. You’d think by re-locating somewhere a little more desirable they’d be able to draw more talent to the company.

I mean, if I were offered a job by GM I’d probably have to turn it down because I wouldn’t be willing to move to Detroit. I can’t be the only one, can I? They’d have to pay me much more than market value to do so. Maybe by moving somewhere nicer they can lower overall salaries. :-0

About Saab Oz slacking on the Turbo-X promoting, maybe Parveen Batish is busy with his duties hawking HUMMERs? ;-)

Please give details about the arch nemesis thing. How do you know? Is there some such website or something? You know who’s my arch nemesis? The Ticketmaster monopoly. You probably don’t even know what that is, but trust me, it’s worthy of my spite.

Hey Grip you can check out who’s your nemesis at hatebook, but I’m thinking of starting nemi-space, social flaming site, and bootube for posting amusing videos or your enemies.

    • 1985 Gripen said:

turbin: seriously? There’s such a thing as “hatebook”. Sounds kind of harsh. People really have a lot of time on their hands. ;-)

I really dug that Turbo X review. Such a nice car.

    • turbin said:

Yeah Grip, Motto is “The enemies of your enemies are your friends - find them here”.

Personally, you got time to Facebook, then you really got time to Hatebook.

      Me, I just TS.

Thanks for posting the link to my review, Swade. Hope the audio dimension really gives people a sense of the car’s mean streak. Outside, at least. :)

I’m a fan of what you do, and I hope I can bring forth more relevant Saab content in the future.

      Cheers from Texas!

      Nemesis?? Is it Bob Lutz?

    • MarkS said:

Tell us the name of this Caddy driver!!

I would formerly say that Scooter was Swade’s nemesis, but I think that’s a bit better. I’m thinking about someone on the East coast of the US. Perhaps not the tallest among us.

Of course, being much less deferential than Swade, if he’s got an Arch Nemesis then I’ve got to assume that I’ve got nemeses galore…

Robin’s book looks freaky good. I’ll take the plunge.

    • Swade said:

You got it, Eggs. But please remember, I’m not just a Nemesis. I’m an Arch Nemesis, though I’m not sure what the rights and obligations of an Arch Nemesis are. Am I supposed to throw rocks on his roof or do phone pranks or something? Is there a place I can look this up? Do I get to wear a mask or a cape?

Scott and I don’t communicate much but it’s fair to say we’re on good terms. I was perusing his personal site the other day and admire the work he’s doing, actually.

And yeah, the blurb books look good.

      Adam: you’re welcome. Good stuff.

Aw, C&D are only hiring a Senior Editor and an Assistant Editor. I need a job.

I applied to Bath & Body Works today. That should illustrate how desperate this unemployment situation has gotten :p

Loud exhaust notes are awesome, but only if they sound good to begin with. Amplifying your Civic’s pitiful exhaust note with a resonator? Ridiculous. Doubling the noise level of your Saab’s note? Awesome.

I love the note in my car, almost as much as love gunning the engine until it’s obnoxiously loud, because the supercharger is still a lot louder, and that’s just kickass.

Ouch………….At least we’re the 2nd best sports city in America according to Sporting News!!! Happy Saabing everyone!

detroitsaab93: no offense to your hometown was intended. I was only expressing what I’ve heard. I know a great many worthy things have come-out of Detroit, not of least were Iggy and the Stooges, John Varvatos, the MC5, and The White Stripes! Of course, the Detroit Red Wings are a perennially great team.

Swade: for the record, that’s who I guessed was the “Arch Nemesis” as well, so what do I win? ;-)

No offense taken! I’ve heard it a million times and I am sure there are a million more to come! Detroit’s kinda like America’s punching bag!

      In other news:

Saab (And Hummer) Australia will not be appearing at this years Sydney motorshow. Only Cadillac, which will be using the motorshow to Launch the brand.

      mmm lets see:

      Fuel prices going up? Tick
Re-sale values going down in credit freeze? Tick
      Eco - awareness/responsibility a tangible social concern ? Tick
Ostentatious displays of wealth/indulgence now on the nose? Tick

Sounds like its time to buy a Cadillac………..

An arch-nemesis tip from Carl Spackler. He’s got plans for Judge Smails….

      I’m impressed….knowing Carl’s surname.

I watched Caddyshack again on the flight from Sydney to Vancouver. Laughed as much as I did back in the 80s.

      Be the ball.
