Saab stories - ever done a leave-behind?
I noted Eggs’ comment in my yellow Saabs story with some amusement:
I am laughing about the timing of this post — I promise you that I did this only Thursday: I left my name and phone number on a Monte Carlo 900 ‘vert that had new leather and carpet with the note to all me if they ever wanted to sell.
I’ll be interested to see how this turns out. It’s certainly worth a try.
I’m sure Saab nuts aren’t the only ones who do this in respect to cars, but I think we’re probably pretty good at it. It’s the nature of following a brand that inspires a lot of curiosity and interest.
My first experience with a local Saab club member was chasing him down one of the city streets here in Hobart. He drove past in a 99 Turbo very similar to my own so I swung a U-Turn and chased him down the street!
I’ve only ever done two leave-behinds like Eggs’ one. One was a note on a 1971 Saab 99 here in Hobart. They didn’t ever call and I believe they still own the car.
The other was a TS business card left on the windscreen of a beautiful black 900 convertible here in Hobart. The emailed me back and we’ve had a few emails back and forth, though no contact. I’m sure that we’ll cross paths given Hobart’s small size.
So…..have you ever done a leave behind? And if so, how did it go? What did you do? What’s the silliest length you’ve gone to and what’s the best (or worst) outcome?
Comments are open…..

Ha! I’ve never done this before.
I’ve taken a picture of my Saab parked next to other Saabs, but never a note. I should try it sometime though!
I most certainly have done this before!
I have left a note on what I thought was a 1987 or newer classic c900, that looked absolutely pristine sitting in the end of a supermarket parking lot. The dash was about as new as it gets, the interior looked brand new. It literally reminded me of one of those cars in the GM history collection.I left a note saying a was a saab crazy and we should be saab dorks together. he never called.
I also left a note on a 9-5 aero wagon offering it a 5 speed manual transmission stiffening service.
these Saab drivers are so anti social!
I left a note on an old C900’s window. I’d seen the guy a few days before, and he got really exicted when I waved. Since it rains thirteen months of the year here in Oregon, I had to write the note on a CD-R.
I have done this a couple of times and neither time did I get a call.
I’ve done the picture thing. There was another black 9-3SS parked next to mine and I grabbed a quick shot on the camera phone.
Any time I see a nice Viggen or Aero parked somewhere I’ll grab a shot with my camera phone.
Once I saw an Audi RS4 parked on the side of the rode when I was just going for a drive for no particular reason. Hopped out and grabbed a pic with my car next to it. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3061/2629584065_ea23663c75_o.jpg
On a somewhat related note, saw my first Turbo X a couple weeks ago driving around town.
Damn, I love cars and Saabs in particular.

I know I’m Saab crazy. I’ve never left a note, but I’ll rev at fellow Saabers on the road if I suspect they’re enthusiasts instead of casual drivers. I believe I’ve received positive responses back 100% of the time.
I’ve never had a note put on my car either, but I noticed another Saab parked next to mine in a somewhat empty area of a parking lot. When I was returning to my car, the other Saab owner was returning to his (wife’s) and that’s how I met Gripen!
The only time I’ve ever left a note was on a first-gen RX-7.
Yes - in 1985 when I was in college with my future wife in Carlisle, PA, there was a junkyard whose owner drove a rust free longnose 2 stroke with original somewhat faded Toreador Red paint and mint original interior. I think it was a ‘65. I offered to buy it when he was ready to sell. Unfortunately, that call came 4 years later when I had just gotten married and, well, you know the rest of the story…
Well, when I owned a BMW *ducks* and moved to a new state to attend college, I found a similar-vintage (mid ’80s) BMW that was very well taken care of and left a note to find out where they had it serviced. I got a response. (How’s that for the up-tight BMW owners, huh?)
My dad has sold two cars by calling the people who left notes on his cars. (I’m from a family of car nuts, and typically, our cars tend to be very clean and well taken care of… Apparently it shows, and people leave notes.)
I’ve had offers to buy my car just from posting pictures to SaabNet.
I recently left an e-note for a guy with an ‘04 9-5 Aero Wagon. It had Klingon wheels and I just had to know if it was a stick (it was). When I’m ready, I’ll be leaving notes on Viggens or Aero Wagons (with sticks). Until then, I shouldn’t tempt myself.
Good times.

When my Mum and Dad swapped their second 900 for their third in the mid eighties they still had a bottle of touch-up paint (does that still exist?) in the old car’s colour. My Dad kept it in the car for quite a while afterwards looking out for another Saab to pass the bottle on to.
It wasn’t the most popular of colours, so it took a couple of months to finally spot another Saab in the right shade. I remember it was in the car park at the bottom of the track up the Old Man of Coniston in the English Lake District. Working on the basis that if they drove a Saab and walked the fells on their holidays, we thought this particular owner definitely qualified for this rather odd gift.
We didn’t leave a phone number of course, so I’ve no idea what the reaction was when he or she found a small bottle of Sand Beige touch-up paint under the windscreen wiper. Looking back now I think their paintwork was in perfect condition, but who knows when it might come in handy.
