TimesOnline review the Saab Turbo X

When I saw that this Saab review was from the Times Online, I was nervously hoping that it’d be Jeremy Clarkson spending some much-needed time behind the Turbo X. Alas, it wasn’t to be.

But that shouldn’t prove to be a disappointment, because despite a lack of Clarkson’s descriptive prose, what we have here is yet another great review of a great vehicle from Saab. What I’d give to have one of these in the garage…..

The Times Online and the Saab Turbo X: It’s an estate of mind

Here are a few snippets from the review. After much discussion of the significance of the term “SportWagon”, there’s this:

The new model’s unique proposition is a highly refined all-wheel drive system, the full technical understanding of which will test your knowledge of “electronic rear limited-slip differential” and “wet multi-plate clutch units”.

Suffice to say that, as a result of this, the 9-3 X Turbo a) goes blisteringly fast and b) remains, unlike most cars of this shape, incredibly stable in and out of corners. That’s got to be good news for car-bound dogs everywhere. No more sliding helplessly across the boot in a scuttle of paws, and slamming your nose into the sidewindow.

And this:

…..twist the rubber stub in the Saab’s ignition and [owners will] hear something that you don’t associate with estate cars – the rousing top-note and burble of a conscientiously tuned engine. They’ll be able to peel away from standing as if they were in a sports car. And then they will be able to take their rubbish to the dump.

The Saab 9-3 Turbo X may inject a new and unforeseen level of covetousness into the battered and downtrodden estate-car experience. It may even be that almost unimaginable thing – an estate car that your neighbours are quietly jealous of.

It’s a great read and whilst I don’t wish to offend you sedan owners out there, the SportCombi Turbo X is my personal choice for most desireable current model Saab.

Oh, and if you feel like you do need a dose of Clarksonesque Saab coverage, his initial review of the Saab 9-3 SportCombi V6 Aero – the cockometer story – is here. And it’s also well worth a read.

SaabUSA cancel European Delivery Program – “no future plans of re-establishing this program”

They know I’ve received this email, so I may as well just play it in full.

From John S to SaabUSA:

Whatever happened to European Delivery returning for the 2009 model year? I’ve been on hold for a year, having deferred purchasing a car pending the return of the progam. Please advise if/when SAAB will reintroduce the program, otherwise I’m heading over to the Volvo dealer.

….and SaabUSA back to John S:

Thank you for contacting the SAAB Customer Assistance Center. We appreciate you taking the time to write us in regards to the Saab European Delivery Program (EDP).

I recognize that this situation has caused you a great level of frustration, and I hope that you can accept my sincerest apology on behalf of General Motors and Saab.

At this time, the Saab European Delivery Program is no longer available and Saab has no future plans of re-establishing this program.

And then, just to rub a little acid into the wound and prove that they were skipping classes during Public Relations 101, specifically the How to customise a pre-formatted email session, our “relationship specialist” adds the following:

If the you would like to test drive a Saab vehicle, I would like to refer you to your their local area Saab dealership.

If you should need to contact us in the future, simply reply to this message or call our SAAB Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-955-9007. Customer Relationship Specialists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

An unwanted invitation and atrocious grammar as well.

——

Of course, the big news here is that Saab have irrevocably distanced themselves from the premium company they tell us they like to keep.

I’m not surprised that the EDP isn’t available for the 2009 model year given the current economic climate. These programs reduce profit margins and consume resources that Saab just don’t have right now. Heck, they’ve even turned the escalators and the voicemail off at the RenCen.

But to cancel the program completely? Forever? And this is how we find out?

And personally, I’m pretty disappointed that we’re finding out this way. I’ve been covering this issue since I first broke the news here at TS that the program was being suspended for 2008. At that time, we were told repeatedly that the program was suspended whilst they incorporated it into GM’s ordering systems (it had been run almost manually from Saab’s resources since day 1) and that it would return as an improved program, most likely for the 2009 model year.

The last time we covered the program was back in May. Eggs n Grits wrote the following:

Saab USA is pursuing a complete revision of the procedure and systems that touch the order of any Saab to create an option for European delivery right alongside all of the other options currently available. That is, Mr. Shannon and his staff are working to create a formal program that can deliver any Saab order to the Trollhattan vistor center, track overseas shipping in the same way that intra-US deliveries are tracked, automatically release the travel stipend to the buyer in a timely fashion, etc. In short, he’s looking for automation and consistency……

…..According to Steve Shannon, they are very close to the complete vision and scope of what they want, but now they have to implement the changes, which is a fairly lengthy process. When asked if the program would be back on track for next year, he explained, “Things are moving a lot slower than I thought they would. It probably won’t be available at the beginning of the model year, but maybe we could see it sometime in the next calendar year.”

Not to be, apparently.

Like I said before, I’m not totally suprised that it’s not back for 2009, but for such a momentus decision like the complete cancellation of the program to be taken with no notice given is just a total lack of respect for the brand’s customer base.

They KNEW that people were watching this. They KNEW that people were waiting for the program to be reinstated so that they could buy cars this way.

I’d suggest that given the current economic climate, people would have been quite understanding if a release had come from Saab informing everyone of the program’s demise. People would have been disappointed but known that it was a sign of tougher times. Now, it looks like times are tough and we’re being treated like mushrooms (i.e. keeping us in the dark and feeding us bullshit).

I wish I had better news to bring you today. The showing of the 9-X Air in Sweden had me on a real high because at least it felt like the Saab spirit was still alive. And it is. But this sure seems like a wet blanket not just because of the news, but also because of the way it’s been recieved.

Is the Saab 9-X Air the best Saab concept car ever?

If anyone had asked my what my favourite Saab concept car was prior to last weekend I probably would have tossed a coin between the Saab 9-3x concept and the Saab Aero-X. I’d find it very hard to split them and rightfully so. The 9-3x was exciting, full of utility, good looks, speed and promise. The Aero-X was just flat out amazing – and both cars were much better in the flesh than in pictures.

Now, having seen images only of the Saab 9-X Air in it’s natural surroundings (the Saab Museum in Trollhattan), I think I might have a new favourite.

The Saab Aero-X

Aero X

The Saab Aero-X is a stunning vehicle and if I’m to be objective, it probably deserved the mantle as Saab’s best concept car prior to this. The Aero-X was so unexpected and so radical that it literally took the world by storm and for a brief period, it put Saab’s name front-and-center before the entire automotive world.

The car’s sweeping, aggressive lines and that brilliant canopy top were truly a sight to behold. There isn’t a single angle from which you can view this car and avoid melting like a silly, hormone driven teenager.

The Aero-X is all the more significant because the styling used on that car will define much of the visual language we see from Saab in coming years. It will be the mother of all Saabs for some time to come.

But the Saab 9-X Air is coming to mean more to me. And here’s why…..

The Saab 9-X Air…a message from the future

The Saab 9-X Air incorporates all the important styling cues from the Aero X concept car and takes them a step further, incorporating new interior elements from the 9-X BioHybrid concept.

It’s got the Nesbitt nose:

And the Aero X’s signature tail lamps across the back:

Above all that, it’s also got a brand new roof system that Saab have been working on for some time now. We haven’t seen it yet, much to our own dismay, but I first heard about (and mentioned) this new convertible system around mid-2007. This is something Saab have been working on for some time and are serious about bringing to market. Only they know when it’ll be ready for viewing, and I hope it’s soon.

…..and a nod to the past

One of the things that I love so much about the 9-X Air is that it combines two elements that have bought a great deal of success to Saab in the past: the convertible vehicle and Sixten Sason design.

To say that one of the world’s most popular convertibles coming from Scandinavia is a surprise would be an understatement, but Saab made the convertible their own back in the 1980s and it’s been an iconic model for them ever since. To see the Saab convertible range continue based on this concept vehicle in a few years from now would be a dream come true.

Not only does it look fantastic (I mean, seriously, is there any way you could resist driving one of these if you had a chance. Seriously.) it continues the tradition of the ragtop. This is just my humble opinion, but a cloth top is what a convertible’s supposed to be and it brought me undiluted joy when I first saw pictures of the cloth top on this car – even if does look a little like it’s wearing a hairpiece.

And the Sason thing? Let me show you those two photos again. It’s actually there for all to see in the background of this first one:

That red car you see in the background is Sixten Sason’s proposal for the Saab Sonett II, a car called Catherina. Several people have commented on it in comments, and I can only assume it was intentional that the rear end of the 9-X Air shares the same rear characteristics with the winged rear deck (you Saab designers reading this will have to forgive my lack of design vocabulary).

There’s not many images of the back of Catherina on the web and sho wasn’t on display when I visited the Saab Museum last year, so you’ll have to make do with this small shot. The 9-X Air’s rear deck and it’s similarity with that of Catherina, even on this small thumbnail shot, is quite pronounced and I’d find it very hard to believe it was accidental.

This, to me, is a wonderful gesture from Saab’s designers toward the pioneering work that Sason did in defining the Saab design language. That they’ve been able to combine it so fluidly with the Aero-X’s design cues make it the perfect blend of past and future – and all tied up in one of Saab’s iconic model lines – the convertible.

But maybe even more important than that……

The Saab 9-X: very buildable

The Aero-X, as much as we all wanted one, was always going to be a million-to-one-shot to get built. It was a statement, a commitment, a pointer to the future. The 9-X Air is something else all together.

The 9-X Air employs a real-world convertible mechanism that Saab have been working on for ages and it’s my understanding that it’s one they’re serious about bringing to market.

The 9-X Air was designed to be a convertible compliment to the 9-X BioHybrid, which was originally conceived as a smaller Saab, most likely to be built on the Delta architecture and called the Saab 9-1. Since then, we’ve learned that the 9-1 is up in the air, somewhat, and that the 9-3 will be ‘rightsized’ down from Epsilon to Delta. The 9-3 must have a convertible, so I can easily envisage the 9-X Air being re-size to suit and added to the range.

The bottom line: where the Aero-X was designed purely to inspire, the 9-X Air has its roots in a realistic need for Saab and therefore must be a real possibility for production.

The Saab convertible of the future?

Only time will tell. Saab don’t have a great track record for bringing concept cars to production. It’s my sincere hope that that record improves with the 9-X Air.

Just point it towards my place and let it go!

Saab at The Melbourne Cup 2008

Here in Australia, the Melbourne Cup is known as the race that stops a nation. Residents in the state of Victoria even get a public holiday for it whilst the rest of us crowd around a TV at 3.20pm to see if our horse has come in first.

Saab have been a major sponsor of the spring racing carnival (of which the Melbourne Cup is the feature event) for some time now, and once again they’ll be pouring a large chunk of their sponsorship dollars into horseracing crowd. And the crowd will be clamouring to get in there, too.

Here’s what a major marketing effort for Saab Oz looks like…

——

Saab Celebrates Fashion and Horsepower with their Sponsorship of the 2008 Melbourne Cup Carnival

Saab is a proud sponsor of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and has been since 1998. Derby Day kick starts the world renowned celebration and features four group one race’s including the highly competitive Saab Quality. This race is the last chance to qualify for the prestigious $5.65 million Emirates Melbourne Cup.

Saab will again host an exclusive marquee in the Birdcage and is set to turn up the heat when they bring a touch of Sweden to this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival with the steaming ‘Song Sauna’ – another first for the races and a striking contrast to last years ‘Convertible on Ice’ theme. Thoughtfully created in conjunction with 2Fish Management, Saab’s three story marquee, newly located on millionaire’s row, is guaranteed to ‘Move your Mind’.

Saab is also an avid supporter of the illustrious MYER Fashions on the Field competition. This year, the winner of the National Women’s Racewear title, is set to make a fashion statement when she drives off in her very own Saab 9-3 Convertible to keep! Saab will also provide a 9-3 Convertible for a year to the winners of both Men’s Classic Racewear and the Design Award.

“Saab is a very proud supporter of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and its many facets including the Myer Fashions on the Field,” said Director of GM Premium Brands, Parveen Batish. “The Saab brand embodies unique design, creativity and individuality as does the Carnival, and we are excited to continue our commitment as we enter our 11th year of sponsorship with the Victoria Racing Club”.

Saab extends their sponsorship even further with vehicle provision to the Victorian Racing Club (VRC), Racing Rewards Members test-drive program, weekend prizes at VRC events, and the Parade of Champions, which are driven by Saab owners each year. Saab also goes the extra mile and chauffeurs VIPs and special guests to and from the track in their fleet of brand new vehicles.

Saab Moves to a Different Beat at the 2008 Melbourne Cup Carnival

Saab is set to turn up the heat when they bring a touch of Sweden to this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival with the steaming ‘Song Sauna’ – another first for the races and a striking contrast to last years ‘Convertible on Ice’ theme.

Thoughtfully created in conjunction with 2Fish Management, Saab’s three story marquee, newly located on millionaire’s row, is guaranteed to ‘Move your Mind’. The multi dimensional design is intended to reveal itself as guests move through the space. There is a surprise around every corner with separate, uniquely-themed areas which will provide the opportunity to relax, to revel, or soak up the action.

The Australian premiere of Saab’s renowned ‘Limited Edition’ Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible will turn heads in the exclusive birdcage precinct. Suitably styled for the racing season, the ‘Champagne’ coloured Convertible will be especially flown in from Sweden and its arrival is in celebration of spring at the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“The Saab marquee, like our vehicles, has always reflected our commitment to style and design. This year our aim was to push the boundaries even further and create a unique and entertaining environment that is another first for Flemington and true to our individual Scandinavian style” says Parveen Batish, Managing Director of Saab Australia.

Like Saab, the marquee walls are multi-faceted, an expression of the brands individuality and unique appeal. The entrance level is the social hub, with unparalleled trackside views, a faceted bar, plasma screens and designer stools.

The luxury penthouse located on the upper level offers premier views of the track thanks to the elevated position in the marquee. State of the art stools line the vantage point and laid back furniture decorates the space, offering the perfect environment for guests to relax and soak up the atmosphere.

The highlight of the marquee is undoubtedly ‘The Saab Song Sauna’ – a dynamic lounge area with a difference. Located on the lower level, the cedar lined walls are reminiscent of a traditional Swedish sauna, the furniture is lounge style, comfortable, and designer cool. In the corner a stage provides the opportunity for guests to express themselves through what else but their favourite song.

Guests who prefer to take a back seat can settle in and listen to the hottest songs being played by some of the countries leading DJ’s. Guests can also look forward to an intimate performance from Saab’s exclusive international guest.

September Heats up the Song Sauna on the Biggest Day in November

Saab is excited to announce that gorgeous Swede September (Petra Marklund) will be their exclusive guest at the 2008 Melbourne Cup Carnival and will be performing an intimate acoustic set in the Saab Song Sauna on both Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day.

September has been a major star in Europe for a number of years, topping the charts and selling Platinum and Gold with hits such as‘Satellites’, ‘Cry For You’ and ‘Until I Die’. In recent years September has been recognised and revered around the world breaking both the UK and US markets. This year she enjoyed a stunning 14 weeks in the top 20 of the UK singles charts(peak #5), and managed to secure the top spot in US Billboard charts.

Australia was introduced to Petra in July with her single ‘Cry for You’, and the response by music directors, editors and general public alike has been nothing short of stunning. With across the board playlist additions on hit music radio and TV she landed straight into the top 20 as the highest new entry, and has stayed there since.

September’s timely visit will also coincide with the release of her debut self titled album, which hits stores November 15th. “I’m so thrilled to be coming out to Australia to perform at Saab’s marquee as part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival celebrations. The opportunity to release my new album to Aussie fans in an environment that shares my Swedish heritage couldn’t be more perfect!” explains Petra.

Besides singer Petra, the September team consists of producer/songwriter Jonas Von Der Burg, and songwriters Niclas Von Der Burg and Anoo Bhagavan. Petra Marklund is 23 years old and just moved out of her parents’ house in Stockholm. She was still in high school when Jonas, Niclas, and Anoo approached her, looking for just the right unique voice that could lift their tunes to something that would move people on, as well as outside of, the dance floor. When the foursome first met up, Petra mostly sang jazz – and today, it’s her dark, soulful voice in combination with high quality hit songs that makes the trademark September sound.

Rare Saab 95 for auction

It’s not often I cover Saabs for sale here. This ain’t a classifieds paper, though I could organise a worldwide classifieds section if you’re interested.

Anyway, what’s for sale here is a rare early two-stroker Saab 95 service van in the UK. It’s being sold on October 29th through RM Auctions in the UK, with no reserve, but a price expectation of between £8,000-£12,000. Yikes!

The vehicles story, as told on the auction page:

The Saab 95 van offered here is very rare, probably unique in the UK. It is thought that only three were imported, given to Saab dealers to run as service vehicles. After being in use from 1962 until the mid-eighties, it was outside behind one such dealer. At one point it was partially dismantled and many of the outer panels were removed and stored inside the van. It was discovered after many years at the dealership in very deteriorated state by an enthusiast who bought it in 1991, intending to conduct a full restoration. After amassing a large stock of spares, the car was completely restored to show quality condition from 2000 to 2001 – something quite unexpected for a humble, if rare, service vehicle.

Andy Saunders acquired the van four years ago from a classic car dealer and while it had already been restored, Saunders elected to return the front doors to their original Saab livery, so as to make the car look exactly as it did in a photo taken outside Saab of Slough’s main parts depot in 1962. Since restoration, it has been featured in print and delighted all who have seen it.

A large file of correspondence and records paperwork accompany the car, as well as a number of old tax discs and its complete history prior to the restoration to today.

I don’t know if they’re going to fetch their anticipated range, but it’s certainly a very desireable piece of Saab automotive history and looks to be in very nice condition.

Video: Saab Rider

Here’s a cool little clip. Hopefully it might turn into a cool little series of clips.

It’s supposed to be a Saab spin on Knight Rider and whilst I’m not sure how well it succeeds at that (then again, would you want to? Not even Knight Rider succeeds at Knight Rider in 2008), it’s very well made and is a lot of fun to watch. The big drawcard for me is that it gives you a fantastic look at one of the Saabiest Saabs in history – a Saab 99 GL.

It was a special treat for me personally, too, as the car had the same white exterior and green interior color combination as my old Saab 99 Turbo.

Thanks to Peter for the link, and whoever you are, please feel free to give us more.

Saab 9-X Air comes home

The Saab 9-X Air concept car came home this weekend, showing at Saab’s beautiful museum in Trollhattan.

The following photos were taken by Toni H – known as Tripolar over on Flickr – who got up early, made the long drive to Trollhattan and was right there when the doors to the museum opened at 10.00am.

A nice car to make the drive in, too. This is Toni’s 9-5, waiting outside the museum for it to open:

Of course, once inside, the main attraction was the 9-X Air, which looks like it was parked proudly in the long foyer area just prior to the main museum display.

Toni’s thoughts in brief after seeing the Air in person:

It was a windy but beautiful fall morning spent eagerly waiting to see the 9X Air in real life. The atmosphere is great at the Museum and its surroundings, that Saab-feeling really permeates the whole place.

Regarding the car itself its a real gem. I love all the pictures I’ve seen on the web so far, but I have to say the car is even more fantastic up close.

This one can’t hit the market soon enough… It is pure design genius in my humble opinion. If I start writing I’ll ramble on and on, so I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves – I hope I captured some of the magic I felt being there

My goodness, this is tasty!

Seriously, has there ever been a car with a tastier rear view than this? If they can get the usual convertible scuttle shake sorted with this, it’d be hands-down the best looking ragtop (or hartop) convertible in history. It’s that good looking.

Another perspective on that rear:

Here’s some stuff that I’m not sure we’ve seen in such detail before now:

And more photos of the dash in action. This is a recorded electronic loop, but it’s supposed to demostrate how the real thing might work (at least in the designer’s mind – the reality would be far more mainstream, methinks)

Note the ambient lighting in the rear, too:

Exhaust pipe detail:

Toni also snapped a couple of non-9-X Air photos, including this overview of the main museum……

……and a few shots of the Saab 9-4x concept vehicle, which was also in attendance.

My thanks to Toni for getting in touch with me prior to this event and providing a great set of photos for me to share here at Trollhattan Saab.

You can see these – and more – at Toni’s page over at Flickr.

But wait, there’s more!!

——

Here’s a quick slideshow of the Saab 9-X Air at the museum. These shots were taken by Nikul Savasadia, whose brother Dippen is a reguar commenter here.

The originals can be found here, at Flickr.

What a car.

Thanks to all for bringing this car to us from such a magnificent setting.

I wish I could have been there myself.
