The Skoda Sonett?!
My thanks to T-shirt guru, Ivan, for passing this one along.
It seems a certain Eastern European car company might have been pinching their designs, or at least their design inspirations, from someone else back in the 1960s.
This is a Skoda 1100GT from 1970.
The brief story is as follows:
Saab opened a dealership at 1962 in Czechslovakia. They sold some 96s and two Sonett II, one for a race driver, another for the AZPN (Automobilove Závodny Narodni Podnik) at 1968. They bought it in order to copy it, so Skoda released the 1100 GT the next year.
It’s powered by a 1.1 litre four-cylinder engine providing 75 HP and capable of reaching a 175 km/h maximum speed.
And we have film!!
The car was used in a Czech horror flick back in the early 1980s. It’s a movie about vampire cars that drink human blood for fuel (Ivan’s note: very environmentally friendly!). The movie was called Upír z Feratu.

The general knowledge around this prototype is there is only one officially built. And then few race cars with different engines. And now few replicas of more or less resemblance pop up like this or this
It really looks heavily influenced by Sonett, but underneath … its a rear engine RWD car
Therefore the front could be more sloped and look a little differently compared to SAAB

That’s one fascinating car! Check out this article about it: Škoda Sonett .
Good stuff, Andy, thank you, it’s a shame that I did not know it before…
Great find. Kudos to Andy for the link, excellent.
Isn’t Skoda known for some other copies? I think that they had a Volvo 144 look alike?
Eggs, the closest to that Volvo would be Skoda 120 (or Estelle in UK) But I think it is just a offspring of generic boxy design of that time and not direct copy (or even a specific inspiration). After that car line, the new Favorit was designed with external help and since 90s its part of VWAG.
There were some quite good looking cars in the 60s&70s just go over the pictures on that page, like (old) Felicia convertible, 1100MBX or 110R based racecars.
