Continued 9-4x Spy Shots (obligatory)

Well, I think that we all have a pretty good idea about how the 9-4x will look by now. However, if you want to see what the current 9-4x test vehicles look like with lots of black tape on them, read on…

Jalopnik has simply the front end posted (see below), but the Car Connection has a handful of full-length snaps that look much as you’d expect.

      That’s with the optional Safari paint job?

      Also featured in Autoweek Netherlands. The 9-4x was parked at an airport in the Netherlands when these shots were taken. Not exactly trying to hide it, then?

      they should, it’s %^&*((* ugly!!!

      Go Saab, releasing a BIG car when all the world are buying small ones…..

    • Mag-X said:

      For the American market, it’s really not that big. Even if it only gets half assed gas mileage, people will still buy it. After all, BMW are running ads about how awesome their pitiful 27MPG average is.

      In 2010 Saab will be launching the 9-4X and Chevrolet will be launching the Volt. I guess that says it all.

    • Ken H said:

      By the way, the Volt can be seen on some pics GM mistakenly(?) uploaded on their website yesterday, and thanks to Automotorsport.se we can see those pictures:
      http://www.automotorsport.se/news/15512/h%C3%A4r-%C3%A4r-den-%C3%A4ntligen-chevrolet-volt–omaskerad/

      A little hint of Aero X from behind, or what?

      Volt looks like a son of Prius and Honda Hybrid.
      It´s funny how they show 9-4X so much considering that there´s many months to official presentation. Let´s just hope that it´s not too large for todays market. Especially in US where it´s focused. I still have problems to think of Saab build in Mexico and designed who knows where.
      Volt is way much closer to what future Saab should´ve been, IMO. And I don´t mean the looks.

      Is that rear light the final one or just camuflage? It’s terrible ugly… :(

      The front grille: I will never get accustomed to the middle part that cuts out the hood. The horizontal SAAB-Line is definitlely destroyed… , maybe elkparts will offer an exchange hood coming from the actual 9-3.
      It looks high and mighty like the Audi Q7, which nowadays is not accepted in Germany as beeing the right dimension for a car. I agree with the others that the Chevy Volt should have been released as a Study 9-3e Version, an intelligent, fast and modern Saab.

      Electricity has to be produced. In Europe, most electricity are produced by burning coal and oil. Hardly environmentally friendly. And, lots of electric cars = even higher demand on the power grid = rising prices.

      What people need is not necessarily smaller cars, since cars will still be used to transport people and itmes. That need will not just go away because of higher oil prices. What can be done is to teach people not to take the cars when they can walk, or take the bike, or commute by public transport. That saving is probably bigger than forcing people to buy small cars just to get less fuel consumption. And then we can still have bigger cars that are roomy and safe and suitable for our transport needs. And they can even have fuel efficient engines. A 9-4X do not need a V6 to be useful to the majority of the buyers. With a small turbo charged 4-cylinder, it can be very fuel efficient.

    • triple said:

      I desperately want to like it. Give me a turbo 4 that gets even 20-24 mpg and I’d be all over it.

      These pictures just re-iterate how much of a test mule this 9-4X is with it’s unfinished headlights, tail lights, etc… It would be nice to see some pictures of an actual production version of the 9-4X on the road or even some spy shots of the 9-5…

      Doesn’t anyone else find it weird that the 9-5 will be showcased in about an months time and we haven’t seen really any pictures of it on the road?

      As much as I would like to see some of the Volt’s innovations make their way into a Saab, I’m really excited about it’s “look at me, I’m a green car” looks. They will go a long, long way towards helping it make a name for itself in the market, and right now GM needs all the help it can get in that respect.

      They’ve taken a huge gamble with the Volt, and it’s edgy looks will at least give it a fighting chance at dethroning the Prius as the king of the eco-friendly car market. GM needs an icon, and it’s looking like the Volt could well be one. I just hope that they’ll also take a page from Honda’s book and offer one with only the two-mode system and say, the 1.4 liter engine and sell the package for ~$17k or so. The series-hybrid Volt will be an eco-friendly halo car, and if they’re smart they’ll do everything they can to extend the good PR that the volt brings to the rest of the Chevy brand.

      And from the looks of that 9-4x mule and the heavy camouflaging of it’s headlights and taillights (the heavy camo always goes over the defining features) it may well end up with headlights and taillights that look just like those on the concept. Which is good, because Saab will have one of the best looking CUV’s on the market.

      Those of you who think the 9-4X is too big, maybe you don’t live in North America ? Here, compact/mid-sized luxury SUVs are everywhere ….. those folks aren’t terribly affected by gas prices (yet).

      I’m not justifying it (but I’m not opposed to it neither), but with Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti EX, Lexus RX350, M-B GLK, Volvo XC60 and VW Tiguan (I’m sure I missed a few more), Saab MUST have a worthy competitor in the market for brand recognition and survival.

      And that 9-4X will be taking advantage of North American production costs means it will be more profitable than the 9-3 and 9-5 lines built in Europe. Profit = more R&D money = survival in GM family. Now is that really a bad thing ?

      I think they should keep the camo and call it a day, sort of gives it that post apocalypse Mad Max look. (Swade I know you love Mel gibson really)…

      Someone on one of the other sites posted this info..

      What I think I can make out here:

      So we got a towing capacity of 2750kg
      The vehicle it is 4950 length, 1920 wide. Height not stated.
      there’s a petrol engine in this vehicle and it looks like it has 209KW (285hp)

      Chassisnumber: 5S3AT13U1AX0185EX

      I like chassis no. so here goes (my guess)
      5 = USA manufacture
      S = Sweden
      3 = Saab Automobile AB
      A = Aero (guess)
      T = 9-4X (guess)
      1 = Usually donates amount of doors (but as the 9-4x will be 5Door only I guess this is not necessary)
      3 = should donate whether Auto or amount of gears (manual) on the 1.9Tid and 2.8 the fig.1 is Auto, so in this case the above digit could be Auto and the 3 is for the doors (no I do think it will be a coupe)
      U = engine. Every Chassis no I’ve seen with U donates the 2.8 V6 Turbo (interesting here that the power output on this vehicle is 285hp though)
      1 = Index no. (can be 1-0 Plus X)
      A = Model year (after 09MY (9) i guess we move onto letters
      X0185EX = serial no

      I’m with Olaf. That grille is not growing on me. The high nose with that grille makes it look like a tractor or something.

      Saw the concept car in London this summer. It’s NOT big. It was surprisingly low, and no more than X3 size. Those cars are still selling - especially in USA where that class may actually grow as people move out of the full size SUVs to smaller car-derived products.
