Saabs O The week - collection edition

I’m pleased to bring you these shots. The owner of two of these cars, Devid M, shared a little of his story with us a few months ago.

David is one of the Turbo X owners that I reported on back then, one of the ones whose satnav order went missing somewhere between his dealership in the US and the factory in Sweden. A few arguments yielded little satisfaction at first, but thankfully Saab eventually came to the party and offered him $500 towards the purchase of a portable satnav unit.

Lemons. Lemonade. And one very happy Turbo X owner.

This was sent through to me in mid-July:

I have only 1200 miles on the car and am getting 20 to 25 mpg. I absolutely love the car and most importantly my wife does too. I don’t really care if the 09’s have most of the x’s pieces - there aren’t many x’s on the road - sort of how the viggen was perceived - very unique.

And then earlier this week:

….on a recent 1000 mile highway trip I got 26-28 mpg in the turbo x!! I was very pleased.

It’s not all about the mileage, I’m sure. As you can see from the photos below, David likes to buy cars that are built to be driven. That’s his X, his son’s Viggen and David’s vintage BMW 2002.

Nice.

Congratulations, David, on the Turbo X acquisition. Click.

      I ache for a Viggen :-(
You can let my Subaru hear that.
      ;-)

Nice fleet Devid (sp?) has there!

Is this the first of a never-ending SOTW?
No pressure, but i certainly hope so!

      :-)

David, if you’re out there… or any Turbo-X owners out there…

What kind of gas milage are you getting in the city?

Hmm, is the Viggen really so smaller as it looks on the photo compared to the new 9-3? :O
Or it’s just because of the distortion of the wide-angle lens?

David, what an awesome collection! :)

      Rogan, I am averaging 12 to 13 l. per 100 km., half-spirited driving.

I saw a Turbo X wagon at a dealer last week. Drool! My 2.0T gets about 33mpUSg/40mpg/7l per 100km on the highway and about 23mpUSg/28mpg/10l per 100km in town. Those spectacular highway MPG were calculated the good old fashioned way by filling the tank driving 300miles then filling her up again. Gotta admit I have never subjected my Saab to the stresses of flooring the gas as all she needs is a tickle and I let the torque do the rest. I really do want to drive a C900 SPG though some day as they are SHARP! I am off to get a 48000km service tomorrow at my local Saab dealer and am going to try and get the guy to let me get my hands on a Turbo X whilst I am waiting. I am guessing my wallet is going to be about $400 lighter by this time tomorrow but she is worth it. I am TOTALLY in love with our car and my work colleagues dont have to hear me going on about Saabs anymore!! :D

Unfortunately the Friday snippets is still no good with Internet Explorer, so excuse me posting here instead:

If you follow the news link “A Look Into the Future of Engines and Transmissions” on the GM Volt page, there is quite a lot of Saab info there, including more info on the new 9-5 250hp diesel:
      http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet?target=http://image.emerald.gm.com/gmnews/viewpressreldetail.do?domain=813&docid=45732

The links at the end of the pages are good, as well.

      Nice picts.
Even the small ’70s bastard doesn’t compromise the quality of the picts or the saabs next to him.

The Turbo-X will probably get sub 20 MPG on pure city driving. I’ve got 6000 miles on mine now and am averaging 23.2, but I do a ton of highway driving. If I start driving around town the average starts plummeting quickly. So I ride a bike in-town instead. :-)

      Hey David - nice 2002! I had a 74 2002 4 cylinder a bunch of years ago. I tossed it into a phone pole…not a good idea. d’oh.

The viggen is smaller than the turbo x - everytime we’re in it we noticed how big the x seems - everything seems to get bigger with age - including me!
we get about 22 mpg with city driving but the turbo x is mostly for the highway.

Get about 13-14 mpg during spirited city driving in my sportcombi (which includes lots of hills).

Still awaiting a resolution to my forgotten GPS order . . .

    • Mark said:

I have read of several people on this website who have been compensated for the botched sportcombi navigation order with a handheld Garmin. I have been dealing with GM regarding this issue and all they are willing to offer me is a free year of bottom of the line onstar service (like I ever use that). Were these navigation issue resolved at a dealer level? With Saab USA? Any advice is much appreciated.

I have 2500 miles on my X/manual/sedan. While I don’t drive pure city miles at all, I do have lots of stop and go back roads driving. When behaving, I get 22 in this mode. When I behave on the highway (65-75 MPH) I seem to be getting 24. When I behave on slower highway speeds (45-65 MPH) I get around 28 (where a real long trip in this mode would probably yield more).

When I misbehave .. some would say have fun, just drop each MPH by 4-5.

This is all during a break in phase (certainly the first oil)

So how do I get past missing much better MPG ? I remember what I’m driving, and I flip flop per tank between behaved and misbehaved :>) modes

I wish the car had a display that told me where it’s putting the power.

Mark, I filed a complaint over the phone with Saab (GM) mediation - it then went to the district GM guy for my area. GM knows about the snafu regarding the mis-built saabs and if I remember correctly there was even a memo to the dealers about how to handle cars ordered without sat-nav- namely that we’d receive $500 credit towards a portable unit.
I would contact your dealer again and hopefully they can help you. Good luck. I ‘ ll contact my dealer to see if they can provide me with a copy of that memo.

David, Thank you for the advice. Out of shear frustration, I email Steve Shannon by making an educated guess of his email address and assume he actually received the email as I got reply from another Saab USA staff detailing the same resolution you posted above. I don’t have my credit yet but hope to in the near future. My dealer has pleaded ignorance and has not been helpful in addressing the issue.

Since I’ve read that Steve supposedly ordered a turbo x sportcombi (presumably with nav?) I can’t help but wonder how was his mistaken order was resolved?

Anyway, props to Steve Shannon for helping me with this issue.
