Saturday Snippets

Thanks to Turbin, here’s some Turbo X advertising - Aussie style. Saab people mentioned last weekend that they have 4 confirmed orders so far. There were 30 Turbo X’s allocated to Australia and New Zealand.

Saab Turbo X

I like it.

Thanks to Tim in Denver for letting us know there’s discounts available for College Graduates in the US. This is something I hadn’t heard of before. Neither had Tim.

Not sure how much. Not sure who. If you think you can benefit then register at GMcollegegrad.com

Thanks to Sven, here’s a photogallery of the new Opel Insignia, which looks pretty sophisticated. Keeping in mind that the Saab 9-5 should be more refined and better equipped, I’d suggest there should be a fair bit to look forward to.

Opel Insignia

I’m not a fan, but I know some will be and it’s pretty fancy for what’s supposed to be a garden-variety domestic vehicle.

Actually, looking at that interior…..

Last week I was chatting away with some Swedes about XWD, and the quiet word was that GM’s German contingent weren’t totally pleased with Saab developing it. It seems some of the development work was done…..a little undercover, shall we say. It was well advanced by the time it was brought to management’s attention.

The powerbrokers in Germany opined that Saab bringing this technology would set the bar too high for future Saabs…..

….which is kind of what they’ve done with this interior, isn’t it? I guess that’s probably the top shelf model they’re showing, but still, the premium Euro interior in the Saab’s going to have to absolutely brilliant (which is a great thing).

Thanks to Rogan, there’s some more Saab 9-3 eye-candy to look at today. Another impressive set of shots.

That interior looks nice, but I doubt it’ll be seen much outside of this picture. Most people will get the base model with sea of plastic.

There’s something just a little bit wierd about the shape of the center stack that puts me off. A few things I noticed: The airvents on the side of the nav-screen make it look like some sort of 1950’s television and the way it kind of narrows down towards the bottom just isn’t pleasing to the eye. Also that wood trim is pretty horrid (although I don’t like wood trim at all so maybe I should just keep my mouth shut).

Also, did any fellow 9-3SS owners notice that the window switch area/door pull looks very 9-3esque?

I guess that Opel interior is “premium” and “high quality” and all that, but it just looks horrible to me. No way I would want to look at something like that when I’m driving my car. What is it? An American living room from 1955? A Russian computer from 1985?

I guess there is something similar between Saab and Apple. Once you appreciated the Saab dashboard, that is the standard for comfortable driving and the thing you compare everything else with. And now that I have tried the iPhone, I wouldn’t want a phone with a smaller screen and 15 buttons and a lousy web browser. No way.

There sure are a lot of buttons in the middle. And that centre dial…are they trying to make it look like a Honda?

It seems that you guys are really into Saab design. Scandinavian minimalism. Remove everything you don´t really need. Insignia´s interior looks horrible to me. Especially the dashboard. Looks like it´s been built out of Lego bricks.

Good I love 9-5 more and more everyday. Maybe I should get me one while they´re still available. it truly Saab, through and through.

I don’t think it’s THAT bad on the whole. I’m sure I would survive driving that car… but the center stack really is rubbish.

The center section is a little weird but other than that it’s not too bad! I am not a fan of wood grain either but it has potential. I am really curious now as to what that 9-5 interior is going to look like….

As a former owner of a pre-07 9-3SS, the Opel’s center stack looks like a strangely familiar Somewhat Aggravating Assemblage of Buttons.
