A new leader in the “Worst Accessory for your Saab” category

eBay. Who knew that it would become the behemoth that it is today?

While minding my own business looking for a used cabin fan for the 9-5, I saw this delightfully ricey and downright silly accessory being pimped for Saabs “worldwide” as the seller says.

It’s a “turbo simulator”. What’s a “turbo simulator”, you ask? It’s a little whistle that you insert into the end of your tailpipe that “simulates” the sound of a turbocharger. Or so it’s claimed by the seller. That is to say, it’s the Saab equivalent of the fart can resonators used by ricers.

So, let’s weigh the pros and cons on this one, shall we?

Cons: Does nothing to enhance performance, in fact will slightly harm performance with some unintended back pressure and added weight (negligible). Lightens your wallet by the sum of US$15 plus shipping. May not be legal in all jurisdictions. Highly annoying.

Pros: Since I’ve already argued the “Cons” side of the story, I thought that I’d let an expert, Bub Rubb, give his full testimony for the “Pro” side of the argument as recorded by San Franciso Bay area television station KRON 4 about two years ago:

I think you forgot the input of “Lil’ Sis.” He indicated that contrary to the claims of the turbo like whistling sound “it’s just fo’ decoration.”

I dunno, that whine sounds pretty damn cool, and turbochargers are expensive…

…what am I saying, this is ridiculous.

When I was 10 years old, I put play cards into my bicycle wheel…COOOOL!
This is the exact same mentality….But with a bigger wallet and a “bigger” sound for the big children who only want to be seen, just like me when I was a kid

What I really want is the accessory that goes on my windshield that makes me feel like I’m going faster when I’m sitting in traffic.

I had one of these on my tractor once!

      GREAT FUN.

Could give the Subaru imprezza guys a take though….

Adam: those types of accessories are usually purchased on street corners and are usually not legal.

hahaha…. maybe should add a fake exhaust pipe on the right hand side to simulate dual-exhaust system…

Ken. T: thats not an unusual sight among the cheap poser tuners around here. I’ve seen dummy ones. I have also seen some that were welded directly before the muffler onto the existing straight pipe, those has about the same function as the dummy ones. :D
