Sunday Night Snippets

A little while ago, I wrote about two stories that were published on a blog called Famosity. The blog is written by a woman who I’d guess is in her 50’s now and these two stories cover the early years of her courtship and married life, with a particular focus on the car that she and her husband owned - a 1969 Saab Sonett.

I raved about these stories at the time and I hope you checked them out. If you haven’t, then I urge you to do so as they make for some great reading.

If you have read them, then I’m pleased to report that part III of the story has been written and the tale completed. You won’t believe the ending!

A Saab Story, part III: Recapturing Our Lost Youth

——

Here’s an interesting one….

This story has been written about a company in the UK that makes catalytic converters, etc. It’s not of much interest to me, really, but the part in bold type certainly tweaked my antennae:

IAN is revving up a shiny blue Jialing motorbike — the brand of choice for weaving between the traffic on Shanghai’s clogged thoroughfares.

Thousands of miles from home, it won’t be travelling much further. Bolted on to a bracket, the bike’s engine turns over smoothly as it sits in a warehouse in Hertfordshire opposite a silver Zafira, two black VW Golfs and, in pride of place, a Bentley Continental convertible.

Round the corner, a cream four-wheel-drive Saab is being put through its paces by a robot driver in a fridge cooled to precisely -20C.

Somehow I don’t think they’re doing cold-weather simulation tests on a 9-7x, do you???

Interesting stuff, indeed.

I’ve featured Kaylan’s car on here several times and I’m sure a number of you are familiar with her work.

She’s now gone big-time with a video of her Turbo-X experience being shown on the GM Next site.

I think the correct phrase is You go, girl!!

-

There’s a short story to accompany/intro the video as well. It’s more than a little ironic that they highlight the Turbo X Driving Academy sessions (where the video was shot) given that the Aero Academy has only got one more full day left as part of the SaabUSA program.

I’m glad Kaylan shared this. The Aero Academy that I attended in June had two people in the 18 - 21 yr old range. Their families sent them using Aero certificates obtained by a parent/grandparent buying an Aero. Those younger folks had a great time, really connected with the Saab brand, and appeared to learn A LOT. The driver licensing process in the U.S. requires nothing more than looking far enough past the hood to operate the car within a lane at 25 MPH in a straight line. Aero Academy was a fantastic opportunity for anyone to learn emergency car handling, especially younger drivers. Now that GM has killed Saab’s Aero Academy program, younger drivers can just learn by wrecking GM cars so GM can sell more cars?

Saab had an outstanding marketing message about helping make drivers safer. The Anthony Henry story on Saabusacom containing the quote “He swerved and then slammed on the brakes just as he had been taught at the Aero Academy” showed some responsibility and forward thinking on the part of the automaker. Now, no more marketing dollars for Saab and no more Aero Academy. I guess Buick and Cadillac get all the marketing funds these days, except for Chevy telling us they have trucks to give away like government cheese.

Saab owners get nothing except the conceited GM lifestyle marketing and a junky CD/DVD of Saab market cr@p as a “thank you”. Even BFJ has disappeared. GM wants us to be more concerned how we look compared to the car next to us at a stoplight. It’s amazing GM didn’t photoshop Kaylan’s entire video to make it appear like a Cadillac CTS. Missing also are the crows-feet, smile lines, and some B.S. about gossip mags, dark chocolate, Italian leather shoes, and pulling up to the boys’ club.

Yes, the Kate Walsh Cadillac CTS favorite things ad (see Youtube) does ZERO for me, to make me interested in the CTS that is. In fact, I find the ad irresponsible and offensive. Whoo. Hoo. Typical GM image. Drag racing/aggressive driving in straight line on a public street with the driver looking in the rear view at himself/herself. I’d get a BMW if I wanted to live that image.

“You go, girl” might have been the correct phrase in 1997.
