Congratulations Celtics!
I love basketball almost as much as I love Australian Rules Football and whilst I haven’t followed the season as closely this year as I have in previous years, I’m thrilled to be posting about the Boston Celtics beating the Lakers to win the NBA Championship for 2007/2008.
Why am I thrilled? It’s a victory for heart and soul over glitz and glamour. The Lakers have the league’s best player in Kobe Bryant, but the Celtic had the best team - all season long (Spurs fans can post their grievances about this to Gregg Popovich).
I’m all for heart and soul (hopefully that comes through on this site in my attitudes about Saab cars) so for guys like Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to come together from previously unsuccessful clubs, realise some synergies and make their team better is a beautiful thing.
The fact there will be plenty of Saabs driving around Boston tonight with flags waving in celebration isn’t a bad thing, either.
Congratulations, Celtics!

“heart and soul”…the essence of saab, to me.
2-1 to boston then- in all sports that is
What a whooping they put on the Lakers last night, wow! At least I can say my Pistons lost the eventual NBA champs………
Kobe Bryant is the leagues “best player”? Jeez – I don’t know about that one.
Us Cleveland natives love LeBron James, he puts on a great show at every game. Now if we could only get the man some backup….
The Celtics did have a good season though. Enough about basketball, let me get back to the watching this lackluster Cleveland Indians baseball season.
The final game was not even a contest. The Lakers stopped playing defense midway through the second quarter.
This proves something though: In basketball, particularly in professional basketball, the difference between a bad team and a championship team is just one or two really good players. The Celtics were horrible last year, then they add KG and Ray Allen and “poof” there’s a championship.
Ditto the Jordan-lead Bulls, Shaq Lakers, etc.
Congrats, the Celtics were the best team all season. Why they couldn’t win on the road early in the playoffs I’ll never know, but it’s over now.
Atlanta may finally have a team — next year. It’ll be fun to watch them in any event.
Ted: I grudgingly admit that Kobe is the league’s best. He’s simply not as likable as LeBron, nor is he the leader that LeBron can be.
This is where I think that the league’s most valuable player may not be the league’s best player. I think that both LeBron and Tony Parker are perhaps more valuable than Kobe this year, but he’s the best.
I’ll bet that we’ll see just how valuable Yao Ming is to the Rockets when he returns next year as well.
I’m glad Boston beat LA…but now my mind turns to how crazy the Western Conference is going to be next year.
Lakers, Spurs, Rockets- each team will be tough to beat…and don’t forget my Jazz.
Deron Williams is unbelievable, and the whole team is young but learning fast. And who knows what’ll happen with the Suns, or even Golden State or Denver. I think Portland will look much better too, what with Oden finally getting to play.
Sheesh! Talk about some competition. Unbelievable stuff out in the West.
The only way that the Jazz will be in the mix is if Kirilenko reports to camp buffed out like Boozer. Then you may have something. Otherwise, it’s tough to win when your “best” player is a guard — ask Kobe.
The Suns are on the wane. A year older and still missing a piece. Golden State — who knows? New roster every year and next year looks to be no different. Denver — nope. AI isn’t the Answer, and Carmelo isn’t lucid about half the time.
Lebron’s definitely the best player in waiting, but I can’t deny Kobe right now. If only he could lead.
And of only Carmelo could get sober. I think Denver could rule the west in the next 2 years with a focused Melo, a fit Martin and Camby and an angry AI. I’d love to see it, just for AI and Martin, like we saw it for the big three in Boston this year. I love Kenyon Martin.
The Jazz will never win with Boozer. It’s karma, I’m afraid. Wherever Booze goes bad karma will follow for what he did in Cleveland. Sorry, Randall, but the best thing you could do is trade him to the Knicks (they’ll take anyone’s contract).
Another Pistons/Saab fan above I see?
I still think we (the Pistons) really had a legit shot at beating Boston in the semi’s, but at least the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup!!
What moves will Boston make in the off-season?
Eggs: Lebron is very likable and I admire his leadership qualities. He really did a good job keeping his cool during the playoffs this season and holding the team together.
Tim Russert (of Meet The Press) would have made some sort of comment about the Celtics win this Sunday had he not passed away unexpectedly last week. A great man (and father) has been lost.
I admit the Jazz don’t have the consistency needed for a title shot as long as they play like they did this year. However, they can and did beat all the best teams (including Boston @ home) as long as they showed up to play. They have the potential at least, but they must improve defensively and play better on the road to have a shot. (Whether they actually do it is a separate debate…
)
In a word, the team is too inconsistent.
That said though, the Jazz are also one of the most underrated teams…everyone writes them off early, yet consider their record since acquiring Korver and tossing Giricek (to stretch the defense better)- they went 38-12 from Dec. 31 on. They were also 37-4 at home all season, the best in the league.
So I’d say to have any shot the Jazz must play more consistently and get to the playoffs next year with home court advantage. Otherwise it’ll be just another season of going down in flames in the playoffs- as usual.
My grievances? None - as a strong Spurs fan here in San Antonio, all I can say is: We’re glad the Lakers were trumped! I agree that Kobe is not likeable. All of the Spurs are a likeable bunch & we’re proud of what they were able to accomplish. We love our Spurs!
We’ll see what Coach Pop does with the team during the off season to “spur” our team to a better & higher level!
