AMS.de claim a Saab 9-5
Auto Motor and Sport in Germany are claiming an illustration of the new Saab 9-5 in their latest print edition. WooDz was kind enough to take a quick snap of it with his mobile phone and shoot it into my inbox to share with everyone.
Here it is. Click.
This is actually pretty similar to previous images shown by AM&S in Sweden. I’ve heard from a number of Saab people who have seen the real thing. One recently commented that whilst this is reasonably close to the real thing, the real thing is much nicer. That bodes well for the future as I think this looks pretty good.
Apparently the lights on the real thing aren’t as Aero-X-ish as this (which is sad) but a lot of the front and front-quarter profile we see here is reasonably close, with the real thing having more of a four-door coupe look. The AM&S article mentions a length of 4.9 meters and a head-up display making it onto the equipment list (finally!, some will say).
My TS prediction is that we’ll see the real thing at Geneva in March next year (and the 9-4x at the Saab Festival in June). It should prove to be an exciting time!

Thanks WooDz and Jan

I like it. Certainly those huge wheels won’t be standard. This says 2009, but I thought the 9-5 was slated for 2010? Or was that the 9-4x?
I’m quite sure we’ll see both of them next year, but they’ll go on sale as MY2010 vehicles in the last quarter of 2009.
So this is what they used as the template…. It looks nice thou and can not come soon enought.

I think it looks awesome.
I hope they´re not making that “american” waistline. Low sidewindows and high waistline. Makes it look heavy, big and bulky. Think of Chrysler C300 sideview. Uhhh..
It´s very easy to believe that the real thing would be way much better looking. This picture here is just a mix of several existing Saab models.
That is sexy! That will definitely steal some caddy sales at the Super Dealerships!
yeah, this looks good but its nothing new or vastly progressive.. I’m hoping that the real thing is breathtaking.
I’m real curious to see what they have up their sleeves for the interior! I bet that will be awesome too!
Wow! That. Front. Looks. Absolutely. STUNNING!
Too bad the Aero-X style headlights won’t make it to production, but nonetheless, I’m sure it will be breathtaking. This made me so glad that I’ll have to polish the 9-5 ASAP.
I agree with Seth. Let’s hope that a little spice is mixed in over the next few months. The interior is something that I’m most keenly interested in.
I agree as well, I like a little more agressive front end though. Like the 9-X, which should also appear on the 9-4X, as I have said this before. I am also curious about the rear, as I never liked the new 9-5 sedan rear, (although I love the new 9-5 wagon rear, hence the “butt wagon” from New England).
But back to the front end, the lights should point a little upwarts, on the sides that is, so it looks meaner. Also this grill should make its way to the 9-4X. As it is 10 times better than the new 9-3.
With cars, it’s all about the right proportions, and I have heard from very credible sources that the proportions of the new 9-5 will be stunning.
This looks good, though. It gives an idea of the design direction of the car.
If this is any indication, even remotely what the new face of Saab is going to look like then oh what a very, very good thing it is indeed!!!! That car is extremely sharp ad stands out amongst the look alike sedans out there today. WoW, now i’m getting excited for Saab!
9-x biohybrid lights and 9-3 lower bumper and fog lights. its looks pretty good, and i hope they have the light pipe running the whole front of the car like in the pic.
I’ve been thinking about the current trend of higher belt lines and less green house and I’ve come to the conclusion it is an inherent design cue that is effected by new safety standards. In Europe we have NCAP and in order to pass new pedestrian tests the hod must have a certain clearance from the engine. Engineers can ’sink’ the engine which will ultimately give a lower centre of gravity and better handling but there is obviously a limit to this. The next step is to start ‘building up’ but to stop the car having a disproportionate roof line the window height has to be reduced. I don’t know about you but it looks like this trend of big door panels and small windows is likely to stay for a while.
You want to steal some sales from the 5-series? Bring it over with a diesel. You’ll get my money, that’s for sure.
I agree with you CWilson, if fuel is still $4 a gallon there wont be many cars selling without hybrids, and Diesel’s.
I love it! I only wish they would keep the Aero X front as shown and add the black line on the side as the Aero X has. However, as is I would DEFINITELY buy it.
I just have to get my ‘02 9-5 Aero to last until then. I will be right around 200k miles so it will be time for a new one.
Ít looks good, but I hope the real thing looks even better. Pity about the bonnet. I hope the real car has a proper clamshell. All this ‘tooing and froing’ with the clamshell is totally stupid. Saab, either stick with it or say it won’t be used anymore.
The new car needs to come in a hatch variant too. With the Insignia arriving in a hatch, there’s really no excuse. It then might pick up some traditional 9000 hatch buyers as well. And for anyone who says that the 9000 never sold as well as it could of done because it was a hatch, you only have to remember that the sedan version (9000CD) never sold nearly as well as the hatchback.
“Apparently the lights on the real thing aren’t as Aero-X-ish as this (which is sad) but a lot of the front and front-quarter profile we see here is reasonably close, with the real thing having more of a four-door coupe look.”
I’m really really hoping the rear end will resemble the Lexus GS, Aston Martin Rapide, or the new Jag XF
I did actually see an XF recently on the road, it looked stunning in motion.
Just packing up from the family reunion at lake geneva. Let me say after being here The 9-5 NEEDS to be a bang. BMW is number 1 Chicago on over(so it seems), followed by Mercedes, Lexus, then maybe Volvo. Saw the new Jag with a hatch as well as a Bentley Continental GT and that Insignia type hatch is a MUST!!
Love the front, detest the back.
Hey,
the original picture is from he 2002’s 9-3x!
Google for a comparsion!

a nice illustration, but only that, an illustration. the real new 9-5 looks more like an update current 9-5 but sleaker. the car’s design will not follow the the current concepts styling wise but will feature some elements from them. the current front setup remains, central grill and headlights in chrome, but sleaker. lower bumper (middle portion) is like the new 9-1x concept. the a pillars are blacked out like the 9-4 but are intergrated a lot better and less suv like. it has a coupe-ish feel to the design. all in all the final design is very nice, somewhat consevative, but still daring enough to set it apart. Only thing I don’t like about the design is he hood, wish they used the 9-1x concept hood. still will look amazing in black.
