Saab 99 rally car build
I love the idea of grassroots motorsport, though I’m not sure if I could ever be competitor. Let’s race it: I don’t have much of a “track record”.
This 99 is being built up for rallying and there’s a really good build page happening here. It’s a blog of sorts and there’s various article and heaps of pictures on the ongoing development of the car. This will be one to watch, I think.
It’s a 1977 Saab 99, by the way.
It’s still in development, but it’s going pretty well…..
Thanks Dan S!

There seem to be a few 99’s being prep’d for rallying currently, I’ve been following the build of a replica of the 1980 ‘Clarion’ 99 Turbo at UK Saabs for some time now. Makes for an interesting read.
It’s a shame Saab pulled out of rallying, I don’t think you can beat a motorsport presence for pubilicity (and to some extent, development). I know Per Eklunds been giving Saab a good showing in Rallycross, and JL Racing is running a few touring cars in Canada, however neither has what you might call a ‘global’ appeal along the lines of WRC. It’d be nice to think that the launch of XWD might be a toe-in-the-door for a new works rally team, but I seriously doubt it.
You’re welcome, Swade!
The first page that I landed on for this site was talking about their results of autocrossing this 99.
I agree w/Matt. I still think some sort of rally presence would help brand sales (or at least some more amateurs) . Maybe the 9-1X someday? We’ll just have to wait & see…
