Saab 9-5 Turbo Edition for the UK

RE-POSTED

Considering my own very exciting ideas for a special edition Saab 9-5, I’ll refrain from commenting on this brain-fart of an idea from Saab GB.

A great car, I’m sure. Just totally unimaginative on their part.

Of course, it could just be that it’s a total value proposition rather than something…..interesting. And in that department, it does exceedingly well. Even better if you consider the finance offers that might be available. I haven’t seen this myself yet, but Cerulean, in comments, notes the following:

…..they are also eligible for one of the following: 1) 0% finance with a 40% deposit 2) Low rate PCP with a 10% deposit 3) £2500 towards your finance deposit 4) £2500 to add to your part exchange price.

PREMIUM VALUE SWEDISH STYLE - THE NEW SAAB 9-5 TURBO EDITION

Swedish car manufacturer Saab has announced the launch of a new Special Edition of its 9-5 model, set to be the best value premium car on the market.

The new model, called the 9-5 Turbo Edition, features a number of added extras as standard combined with an even more attractive list price, making it an outstanding proposition to prospective customers. It makes use of Saab’s fuel efficient turbocharged engine range, giving drivers the benefits of a larger engine without the usual drawbacks of extra weight, bulk and higher fuel consumption. There are two specifications available – the 9-5 Turbo Edition and the top-of-the range 9-5 Aero Turbo Edition.

The 9-5 Turbo Edition is offered with a choice of three engines – the entry-level 2.0t, the high power 2.3t and the economical 1.9 TiD diesel. New standard features include 17 inch, five spoke alloy wheels, leather sport seats heated both front and rear, electric driver’s seat, and headlight washers. Available in both Saloon and Estate bodystyles, and with manual or automatic transmission, prices for the 9-5 Turbo Edition start at just £19,995.

For those drivers who are looking for a high performance vehicle, the 9-5 Aero Turbo Edition is the answer. Offered with the 2.3T (260PS) engine - which goes from 0-60mph in just 6.5 seconds in the Saloon variant with a top speed of 155mph - the Aero model features DVD Satellite Navigation and dual electric seats, as well as the traditional Aero features including performance brakes, Bi-xenon headlights, metallic paint and sport chassis. Also available in both Saloon and Estate bodystyles, and with manual or automatic transmission, prices start from just £24,995.

All models continue to offer the standard features that already make the 9-5 a comfortable and reliable drive, including sport seats, Automatic Climate Control, Driving Pack (cruise control and car computer), electric windows, Night Panel function, CD player, anti theft alarm and immobiliser, rear parking assistance and many more.

The new 9-5 Turbo Editions also retain all the safety features of the Saab 9-5 including a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating, Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR), dual-stage front and side airbags, Electronic Stability Programme and reinforced doors.

David Pugh, Marketing General Manager for Saab said: “The Saab 9-5 has long been a car synonymous with comfort, safety and performance. This experience and reputation combined with these exciting new features makes this car an attractive proposition for premium car buyers.”

Did they read a five year old brochure and just re-type it?

      Whats the “special” part??

    • Andy Rupert said:

Ya know, I’ve still got a turbo badge from my ‘88 if somebody wants to make their car a “turbo edition.”

      What a thrill.

    • Paul Humpage said:

Doesn’t the standard 9-5 in the UK come with cloth seats and 16 inch ordinary alloys?

For a starting price of around AU$40,000 you’re getting heated leather seats front and back, sporty alloys and headlamp washers. Sounds rather special to me.

This just confirms that Saab are desperate to clear their shelves of an OLD car ready for the new one. It is excellent value for money BUT I still wouldnt buy one…..

      I don’t understand…

Don’t both comparing exchange rates as each market has it’s own pricing strategy.

This edition is great value for money. With a serious saving over the standard car in Linear SE form. It’s just what dealers need in to sell the 9-5.

It doesn’t have 300hp with a unique eLSD, but this car will attract switched on cookies who know a deal when they see it.

    • swade (Author) said:

Paul & WooDz, I understand. But I always hoped the last 9-5 would be special because it’s…well….special. Not because it’s relatively inexpensive.

Hopefully this isn’t the last of the 9-5 editions.

    • Markac said:

The UK had the “Ruby Edition” to farewell the C900, so they know how to do it right. What they are offering is a good deal, but not a commemorative model.

    • Paul Humpage said:

I don’t think this is the final edition by a long chalk. At the earliest the new 9-5 will be the at the car show in the european summer of 2009 so later 2009 early 2010 for deliveries? The current special on the 9-5 in the UK i would have thought is just to move things along a bit. You’ve got to admit from our perspective here in Oz with the prices of the 9-5 then the UK price is rather good.

I wonder just how many 9-5s there will be to shift when the time comes? The model sells poorly but i wonder how many they build. Perhaps there will be no need for any super duper runout variants.

I think the phrase ‘has long been’ in teh Saab Pr spiel says it all.

It is a lot of old car for the money. I love 95 wagons, but could your really rationlise this agasint a new 93 wagon or a new model V70?

At this price - maybe… Both of those two othercars are really at £25 k + with that spec list.

But the kit is not that Saab special is it.

Come on Saab UK- talk to Swade and us lot anf we will spec you a 95 ‘Swansong ‘ run out model. With special swan badges -wings and things…

Spec starting with a satin grille anf headlamp kit from Hirsch and the Aero two tone leather seats…

    • Bernard said:

Oh my god, the 9-5 is now less expensive in the UK than in Canada!

Why buy it? Because it is the last “real” Saab, still safer and more enjoyable to drive than its competitors.
It is also a car that we know will show insignificant wear and tear even after 10 years and 300,000 km. If you are willing to commit to regular oil changes, you can pretty-well drive this car until 2028 with no worries (other than having to buy E-85 in 100ml bottles at the chemist’s).

    • Edonis said:

Wow, headlight washers, what an exciting new feature!

Saab Norway had a 9-5 Nordic Edition which was really good value for the money with the 1.9TiD, but otherwise, it was very unimaginative… Don’t know if they still offer it.

    • WooDz said:

      Don’t forget the 9-5 will have a 09MY too.
      We don’t a new one until 2010MY.

But just to see the reaction…
      for the European readers,
If Swade could offer a 9-5 TS edition would you pay the money for it for it?
and how far would you travel to collect it?

    • WooDz said:

      Must learn to proof read…

      Naturally I meant
we don’t GET the new one until 2010MY.

The specialty is in the discount. The 2.0t that’s priced at GBP 19,995 has a listprice of GBP 25,540. Well that is a 20% dicount, which is just enormous at least it is in Europe! Realise too that a 9-3 SportSedan with a similar 1.8t 150bhp engine has a price of GBP 22,070. Without leather and 17″ alloys! So this Turbo Edition is a really good deal.

Some other UK-cars, equipped comparable to a GBP 19,995 Saab 9-5 2.0t Turbo Edition:

      Audi A3 1.8T - GBP 23,015
      Audi A4 1.8T SE - GBP 24,030
      Audi A6 2.0T SE - GBP 27,885

As Jacob says, not only is it a bargain price, they are also eligible for one of the following. 1) 0% finance with a 40% deposit 2) Low rate PCP with a 10% deposit 3) £2500 towards your finance deposit 4) £2500 to add to your part exchange price.

I am not sure what planet some of the previous posters are on……

9-5 Aero with all the kit, 260 BHP Sat nav……for £25k that is the steal of the century!!! Plus you can get a discount ….

      Looks good news to me!

    • TNBarsteward said:

£19,995 for a 9-5 with shed loads of kit and some decent finance offers. You could barely get a well specced Golf for that….and people are complaining!!!

    • The Fop said:

No way they can spend the cash to put TTiD, XWD on the car at this late stage. Given what they have to work with, this car looks like a steal. At this price, I’m sure lot of V70 customers will be looking at the Ovlov price list and wondering if it’s really worth it…

    • swade (Author) said:

I’ll take the blame for the complaints. When I saw the press release calling this the “Turbo Edition” I figured it was going to be the start of a wave of special edition 9-5’s to send the model off into the sunset. I was profoundly disappointed that the main modification seemed to be to the price tag, not to the car itself. I wrote my introduction accordingly.

It IS exceptional value for the money and as always, the 9-5 is a rock solid car.

    • Bruce said:

. . . and very enjoyable to drive (my past cars have included an Alfa, a BMW, etc.) . . . Bernard and Swade are on the mark. Yes the MARKETING department needs a new 9-5. But as a car, it’s first class, reliable, comfortable, and main place you see traffic is in the rear view mirror (that nicely dims them out if they are close).
