Famous Saab driven by yours truly today
As much fun as it was to drive the TurboX today during the media drive event, I was really, really looking forward to driving the Saabs from the GM Heritage Collection.
There were several cars (pictures and stories to follow), but this one is genuinely famous. I really drove it. Today. I didn’t get it out of second gear, but I drove it. Too bad that the course was so small.
I leave this picture as a clue: why is this specific car so famous? 10,000 brownie points and good karma for your Saab for the next several hours with the right answer….

Is it a 900SE from the 1996 Talladega Challenge?
Speaking of the Heritage Collection, it’s apparently now open to car clubs and groups of 20 or more.
I must find 19 friends.
You’re an Ohio State Buckeyes fan?
Go Blue!
I’d have guessed Talladega as well…
well, my first thought would be taladega, but where those not silver metallic (think that they had a subsequent limited edition with it)?
To just make a wiled guess… that car has been the pace car in the sports car series (did saab not sponsor one of those?).

It’s one of the Pikes Peak car isn’t it?
Yeah, I was just going to say the same thing.
It is the Pikes Peak car.
The Pikes cars that Per Eklund raced were both Viggens IIRC. 2000 and 2002. The Talladega cars in 1986 were all Saab 9000s and were silver, but in 1996 when they used 900s, I think this might have been one of them.
I think Markac won the car-karma right back at comment #1 (a fine car he’s got, too. Feature coming very soon.)
UPDATE: but then…….I could be wrong (see below)
Wow.
The Talledega 900s were all silver like the 9000s before them. See http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=770966498402759221
Also where is the turbo badge on the grille?
Swade is correct. It’s the 1995 SAAB 900 SE “PIKES PEAK”.
What a thrill to drive this famous Saab, even in second gear. Per made good on GM’s gamble to prove the NG 900 was still a Saab, by winning in the production class.
The commemorative Talladega 900s came in 3 colours. Silver, Black and Cayenne red. I owned a Silver 1997 900S Talladega 2.3 coupe for a while.
Speaking of Talladega Challenges, we must be due for another one? How about XWD 9-3 Aeros? That would be a great way to introduce them!
I was quite tempted by the Cayenne Talladega. I agree an a new Talladega Challenge would be great but the biggest challenge at the moment is for Saab dealers to survive with such an antiquated portfolio, XWD or not
Come to think of it,why not bring a Turbo X to Pikes Peak. It seems to be a real champion on dirt.
