US sales data - March 2008

It’s time for more sales data, this time from the US market.

Check out Autoblog’s total market data and you’ll see it’s a sea of red downward arrows as car companies right across the spectrum struggled in tough economic conditions. Thankfully, Saab’s is one of the few green arrows in there.

After eight straight months of sales declines, SaabUSA finally hit one out of the park, selling 2962 Saabs during March, a 12.4% rise over the same month in 2007.

Saab 9-3

There were 2,133 units of the Saab 9-3 sold during March, which was a 16% rise from the 1,981 sold in 2007 (there were only 26 sales days in March this year compared with 28 in March last year).

So far this year, the Saab USA have sold 4,371 units of the 9-3, a fall of 10.3% compared to the 4,875 sold from Jan-March last year.

Saab 9-5

There were 316 units of the Saab 9-5 sold in March, down 7.8% from the 369 units sold in the same month last year.

So far in 2008, there’s been 738 sales, down by 32.4% on the 1,092 for the same period last year.

Saab 9-7x

The Saab 9-7x had a resurgence, with 513 sales. That’s an 18.3% rise over the 467 sold in March last year.

I’d imagine much of this monthly increase was due to a lease pull-ahead scheme where they offered existing lessees a six-month pull-ahead to renew their lease by picking up a new model (i.e. get out of your old one quicker). It wasn’t widely advertised, but it was there. Given that the 9-7x is very popular amongst GM employees, I’m sure the right people knew all about it. They probably restricted the marketing to internal email :-)

So far this year, there’s been 1,358 sales of the 9-7x, which is pretty steady in comparison to the 1,372 sold for the same period last year.

With deliveries of the Turbo X getting underway in Europe this month, North American deliveries won’t be too far behind.

Here’s hoping this XWD introduction will bode really well for Saab in North America.

The 9-3 had a lease pull ahead also, which made us get a new one in February instead of April. This is quite common among all automakers, as I have also used this in past leases with other companies.
As for the Turbo X, my salesman said that the dealership (Milford, CT, USA) is getting 4 in early May - none yet sold.

Who cares why, Saab is up for the first time in forever, break out the bubbly! So is Jaguar, all thanks to the XF.

Yeah, I agree. I don’t care how they sold them, as long as they are leaving dealer’s lots.

CT Pete - I guess you don’t have to special order the TurboX then.

GM offered to anyone in a GM lease 6 months out early….I can only wonder how much this little push will hurt when they need sales later in the year… Huge incentives on the 9-7X pushed those out the door. You can lease a $42000 9-7X for less than a $32000 9-3…go figure….
