Saab Alcokey update
1985Gripen is on a Saabatical from the brand at the moment, but we had a chat the other day via email and he mentioned a new law that’s been proposed in California.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), in partnership with California state Assembly Member Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles) and the California Highway Patrol, will be holding a news conference in support of critical anti-drunk driving legislation that can reduce the number of drunk driving deaths on California’s roadways. A.B. 2784, introduced by Assembly Member Feuer, would require all convicted drunk drivers, including first-time offenders, to install alcohol ignition interlocks on their vehicles. This bill passed California’s Assembly Committee for Public Safety today, Tuesday, April 8.
The mention of this law reminded Gripen of the Saab Alcokey, which is still in trials at the moment in Sweden. I thought I’d write to Saab Sweden and see how things are going with it and if it’ll be production-ready any time soon.
The alcokey is on the move. We are right now doing a broad test on vehicles in the Saab fleet of cars. We know that the project has taken a bit longer to get finished but we want to make sure that the interaction between the car and the user will be really smooth.
Think there is no room for malfunction or bad experiences. I mean, how would it feel to not be able
to start your car if you’re all sober. And vice-versa is not good either!
So it’s still in the lab by the sound of things.
It’d sell well in Cali, I’m sure. You could sell one to the Lohan household, the Spears place, get a couple of spares at the Hilton’s and then there’s the Bartons……..

…Mel Gibson, Kiefer Sutherland, Nicole Richie, Ray Liotta, Vivica A. Fox, Tony LaRussa, Warren Moon, former St. Louis Cardinal Scott Spiezio, former wrestler Andrew “Test Drive” Martin, Denver Bronco Brandon Marshall, Richie Sambora, Scott Weiland, Mickey Rourke, Patricia Arquette’s husband actor Thomas Jane, Dawn Wells (Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island)… the list goes on.
There are even whole websites set up to track the latest celebrity DUI arrests. 2006 was named “Year of the Celebrity DUI”. It’s not like they’re becoming any less frequent either.
Alcokey is potentially a killer product for Saab. What celebrity wouldn’t want to drive a convertible Saab around with an Alcokey system rather than some court-appointed system in another make of car? This is a way Saab can get celebrities to be seen driving their cars.
I understand the system must work perfectly EVERY time, but they really can’t delay this product too much longer. They can’t afford to be a dime short and a dollar late on this one. If this proposed law in California goes through even FIRST TIME offenders must have an ignition interlock installed on their cars. Saab can time this introduction perfectly to take advantage of that.
Wow, way to butcher an idiom. That should have read “day late and a dollar short”.
