Excellent Photos from Castle Combe Action Day
Thanks to good reader Robin, I’ve taken note of this excellent series of photographs of Saabs in action at the track!
My review of the pics marks another difference between driving in the UK and in the US: in the United States, we would have cancelled track day rather than run in the rain. However, those Brits with their stiff upper lips carried on with aplomb.
An aside: does anyone see any irony in using a Kia as a safety car?

Why cancel a trackday due to rain, dont you use your car when it’s wet? Here in Sweden driving is allowed during rain but with a 100km/h top limit and a no-passing code. Usually it’s also allowed to take passengers in the car (all with helmets etc of course) which is an excellent way to learn the do’s and dont’s when riding with a more experienced driver.
the guys were going as fast as they dare yesterday, there were certain points on the track where there was a no overtaking rule because of the weather but it was a case of “GO”. In the afternoon it was bad but still they went for it.
Nice series of racing picts.
The MR2 sportscar overthere seems in serious spinny trouble, while fwd saab saloons show stability in all picts. Is it because of the general difference in concept & lay-out or just the driving skills ?
The sierra XR4 (or is it a cosworth ?) is a fine machinery, altough it misses the style of the 90’s and 900’s. The Uwe Bahnsen-design is much altered and the ’80s wing looks way over the top. Haven’t seen one of those in 20 years on the road.
Wilfried: I almost commented on the XR4 myself. Here in the US they were sold as “Merkur”, German for Mercury — they were sold under the Mercury brand. My sister had one, it was absolute junk. The thing ate universal joints for breakfast. It also developed a serious thirst for oil at about 50,000 miles and the bright plastics (including that wing you are referring to) went pale in year two.
I’m surprised that nobody else pounced on the Kia. Hilarious in my book.
ANd about the wet vs. dry trackday: Here is would have been seen as risky and most folks would rather run without the rain restrictions, so most wouldn’t have participated.
I suppose that NASCAR rules that prohibt racing in the rain has something to do with it.
