Enhanced Driving School - Canada - coming soon!

The Saab Owner’s Club of Canada Inc have been running track days for over 20 years now. Actually, it’s more than just a track day, which is why they call it their Enhanced Driving School. This year they’re running two full-day sessions and the first of those is coming up in around a month from now.

It’ll be held on Friday, May 9th, at the Dunnville Autodrome, near Hamilton ON, which is about 90 minutes southwest of Toronto. Personally, I couldn’t think of a better way to start a self-declared long weekend!

The day is for licenced drivers only. It’s not race training and there’s no licence testing or accreditation provided. There is some classroom time and the day will be focused on building the skills of licenced drivers in terms of handling, braking, etc. It’s a course for the real world and you participate in your own car.

If you want to know more information, check out the EDS section of the club’s website. You can download an application form there, too.

If you need to plan further ahead, they’ll be running a second course at Shannonville on Friday, October 10. I’ll actually be in Canada at that time. Hmmmmmm. The possibilities……

And who is going to lend YOU a car for this drive day???

Back when I owned a BMW I did the all-day driving course. I suspect the SAAB school is similar. Absolutely worth every dollar. Instructors were track and rally instructors, but the focus was on safe fun driving. We did some classroom stuff, then stops and turns on a skidpad (wet parking lot!), recovered from oversteer, with stability control on and off, avoided objects darting out between cars, etc., and ended with a timed slalom. The cars had radio contact with the instructor.

Oh COME ON!!! Haven’t I suffered enough for my Viggen’s lack of adhesion?

I’ve actually taken a leaf our of Biopower’s book and will only ever drive at 85% on track days in the future. I was going somewhere around 105% on V-day last year.

….and Bruce, I agree. These days are worth every dollar.

Swade: I’ll lend you the 9-5. Thrash it all you want.

The 900, on the other hand…;-))

Let’s just try a comment and see if it works OK.

Nice to see the Canadians keeping smiles on even though Saab Canada seems to care nothing about them. Or are times changing? Have somebody at Saab Canada seen all thats been written in this blog? Hope so.
Pedal to the metal fellow Saabistas!

By no means another dig at Swade,
But he should have taught us all a valuable lesson.
It seems that you should get confirmation from the event holder and your insurance company that you will be covered should something go wrong before attending an event like this.

Anyone who has attended one of these events or anything similar can’t stress enough how valuable they are, they are after all NOT racing events, quite the opposite, but accidents do happen and that’s why we have insurance right?

I would love to find out if there is a similar event hosted in western Canada as well. Anyone know of such an event - specifically in Alberta? Even though I’ve been driving for over 25 years and have piloted everything from an Austin Mini to a freight truck, taking advantage of a full day of instruction from some professional drivers while behind the wheel of my own 9-3SE would be something I’d sign up for in a New York minute.

I just received preliminary confirmation for the Aero Academy in May –so I am pretty pumped about that. Plus I will not have to drive my own vehicle so… ;-)
