The wheels maketh the car - Viggen style
One of the most contentious decisions a Viggen owner will face is what to do about the wheels.
On one hand the original Viggen wheels look absolutely fantastic. They’re finished in a black-chrome type finish and given that they’re bespoke to the Viggen, there really is something special about them. There’s a lot of five spoke wheels out there, but for some reason these ones just look right.
On the other hand, they’re made of marshmallow. They’d have to be softest wheels I’ve ever come across. I’ve already had mine straightened and repainted once and after my recent accident, I’m a candidate for doing it again - IF I want to keep them on the car.
Fellow Viggen owner Jeff K has just emailed me food for thought. Saab have always had great alloy wheels and these ones that he’s just had fitted are actually my favourites.
You may remember that Jeff had a picture unofficially appear in the Saab Pride of Ownership competition. You can take a peek at his red Viggen with its original wheels here.
Those double-Y’s are certainly giving me food for thought. If it’s not going to be a restoration of the original wheels, then it’s either these or Hirsch six-spokes.
Thanks Jeff for giving me a glimpse.

I like those wheels except they make a Viggen look like an Aero. Those wheels were fitted to 9-3 Aeros MY2001 on. It’s a shame that Saab used the Viggen bodykit and seats on the later Aeros. It kind of made the Viggen less unique.

That’s the only second thought I have about them, Mark, that leads me to consider the Hirsch rims. I actually think these look better than the Hirsches, but in the back of my mind……
Last year someone in the Saab Club told me you need 18″ wheels on a Viggen to make it handle properly. I’m not sure that I’d agree, but I haven’t driven a Viggen so I can’t really comment. I’m sure the tyre price is much higher, but maybe 18″ Hirsch rims?
I wonder how the 2004-5 9-5 Aero wheels would look on a Viggen.
These wheels were described as ALU36 in the UK and looked good on all models.
“PAViggen” on the TSL site set up his
killer (stage IV) Viggen w/
killer Volvo S60R!
Yes, the 18″x8.0″ Pegasus wheels went
on w/ no bolt pattern problems!
Ugh! I keep hitting the post button before i review what i write!
So here’s a link to what the S60R Pegasus wheel looks like:

Yeah, those are nice wheels…. actually look alot like the 9-5 Aero wheels I mentioned above.
I keep saying, Super Advan Version 2s would look amazing on a Saab. I don’t really care that the JDM crowd goes crazy for these things…they were designed for Saabs.

Dude, no Aero wheels on a Viggen please.
How much are the 18′ Hirsch? Can’t see them on elk parts no more
You mean these ones Richo?
Here in the States, I am only aware of those wheels coming stock from the factory on one year’s model — the 2003 9-3 Vert w/ Sport Package. If they came on anything else, I don’t know about it.
Those are my favorite modern Saab wheel and while popular with US enthusiasts, they are by no means common here.
In most markets they came standard on the 2001 and 2002 Aeros with the Viggen bodykit. Here’s a pic.
Right, like I said — they are somewhat common elsewhere, but there were no OG9-3 Aeros here — only variations of base, SE and Viggen models. I believe our Aero equivalent (engine-wise) was the SE HOT, but only the 2003 Sport package vert came with the Viggen bodykit and double 3 spoke wheels.
It’s just a bit of Aussie wheel snobbery, Jeff, on my part as much as anyone else’s. They’re definitely the most attractive wheels Saab have ever produced IMHO - SW
jeff k: I really like the wheels, but I think Viggen owners don’t like their cars being mistaken for an Aero.
I understand how they feel. I have a 1999 9-3
Monte Carlo ( B204R HOT) which looks very similar to a 2000 Aero ( B205R HOT) except the Aeros never came in yellow.
Markac - yeah, that’s them (actually i didn’t look but i knew someone would, and post the link hehehehe)
Moe, you like these ones?
ahh, oops….
Try this
WTF!!!
no, maybe this?
jesus, that was harder than it needed to be!!!
Swade,
try this for size… a bit of Viggen mixed up with wheel.
I still think the Aero Wheels are great but…
Richo you’re right the 19″ Hirschs look terrific, but are you certain they fit a Viggen?
They may be Aero wheels, but a set of these come in a lot cheaper. The tyres would be much cheaper too!
I saw some of those on a 9-5 Arc earlier today…. looked very nice. I like those wheels Richo posted up there, they remind me of the stockers but probably won’t be so mushy.
Now presenting….PAViggen w/ those 18″ Volvo Pegasus wheels on his beast of a black Viggen:
