So who can fit in a Sonett?

Following on from the Ebay entry earlier today, both Eggs and Andy (that sounds like a puppet show) mentioned that they wouldn’t fit in a Sonett II.

I’m pretty sure both those guys come in at around 6ft 4in or a tad more. I’m just a shade over 6 feet tall myself and have a goal of bringing either a Sonett II or a Sonett III into Australia some time in the next 3 or 4 years. I showed this one (below) to my wife earlier today and even she said “wow”. The question now is: Am I going to fit in it?

Does anyone visiting here own one of these, or have you owned one in the past? How tall are you and how well did you fit in the car? Am I going to be wasting time and money if I finally get to bring one of these babies over, either a II or a III?

Saab Sonett II

That is just cool, cool, cool!

  1. Well, I’m 5’10″, and I can fit in one. You really have to duck and contort yourself into position *prior* to getting in, though.

They sit very low to the ground, there’s more vertical space in there than you would think.

  2. First of all, why are we even talking about Andy? He’s into his second car from an English-speaking country, his opinion is moot.

    I’m 6’5″ (197 cm) and I wear a 50 jacket. I don’t fit in a freakin’ 9-3 that well!

  3. That’s it! No more puppet shows with you, Eggs. You’re fired!

You can’t fire me! I QUIT!! And that goes double for Mr. Giggles!! EnG (formerly of Eggs and Somebody-that-I-won’t-name!)

  4. First of all, side exhaust pipes are the second coolest thing ever (after whaletail spoilers).

Second, if it’s too short, you can learn to chop a roof and make it a little taller :p

  5. Swade – you should try to make it to the next Saab convention (within reasonable distance) and ask one of the Saabers if you can get behind the wheel of their Sonett…you know, just to see how it goes. Hopefully they won’t need to use the “jaws of life” to extract you! And hey, I want to see that puppet show! (Jeff-nice idea by the way…)
    ;)

  6. I had a 73 Sonett III and I am 73 inches tall. I didn’t have any trouble, although my head was almost touching the roof, until I redid the headliner and reupholstered the seats with a kit from Jack Ashcraft (which looked very nice). The new padding added a little to the height of the seat and my head was now firmly contacting the roof! There is no rake adjustment to the seats, so you either have to tilt them back by shimming the front (which puts a lot of stress on the rear attachment points, or scoot your butt forward and make the ride a lot less comfortable. All done and said, I traded the little car in for my 01 Viggen convertible…no headroom issues now!
