Saab Turbo X sales update
I thought it’d be fun to check into how many Turbo X’s have been sold so far. I don’t have a full number, but there’s a few key markets that we’ve got figures for recently, so we can get an idea as to how things are going.
One should keep in mind that there’s varying levels of awareness in the marketplace from country to country. Some places are more media-intensive than others and the Turbo X has had no launch activity at all in some countries.
So, be that as it may…..
United States - the US market has been allocated 600 units, and recent reports state that they’ve sold over 500 of those units,
United Kingdom - the UK has 500 units allocated and there’s been 175 sold so far, including 10 in Ireland.
Sweden - There’s going to be 175 Turbo X’s going to Swedish owners and I believe the full allocation has been sold
There’s no information received as yet for Canada (not launched and 125 units allocated), Switzerland (120 units), Germany (90 units) or France (50 units) but I’d love to know if anyone’s got any info.
There was a comment passed to me that Norway sold 15 Turbo X’s within around a week, and at a price that equates to around US$155,000!!!
If you’ve got any knowledge as to the Turbo X uptake in your market, then please let me know. It’s certainly encouraging to see numbers like this with the car still some time away in some markets and with hardly any marketing support so far in most markets. It all gives reason for some optimism for the uptake of XWD in the future.

We have 5 coming (4 sedans and 1 Combi) and only one sold (the Combi which was ordered).
As I see it the Turbo X is probably sold mostly to current Saab owners. With some marketing we would probably see people new to the brand owning a Turbo X or another Saab.
It just seems silly to me to build a car like the Turbo X and not showing it of in marketing..?
Marketing= awareness and higher sales volumes.
Many of you I believe sorta stumbled in to a Saab and fell in love with it. If Saab continues to “market” cars like that we will not see increased sales even though the 9-4X is a lovely car, the new 9-5 is on it´s way and the 9-3 is superb in many aspects.
Saab need more ad money to make people aware that Saab is a great product.. or even to tell many that it even excist.
In many markets I belive you could ask BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Lexus etc owners if they know something about the Saab brand and many would go..:- Saab? Brand? I´ve seen Space Above And Beyond many times on tv. Oh, is it a car? From China or what?
Saab is an enthusiast brand, but should go more public to start making money. No I´m not saying +500.000 units, but hopefully +300.000. And no, I´m not saying make it yet another Saturn or Opel. Audi sells a s–tload of cars and still manages to stay exclusive and premium.
It´s all in marketing together with a good product.
Tompa
Swiss share of Turbo X cars is pretty high. Are they all going directly for sale, or are they sent to Hirsch to boost them up little??!!
Singapore has been allocated 2 Saab Turbo X sedans and both have been sold, expected date of delivery is around June/July.
New reviews? Lots of stuff, keep clicking forward even after you think you’re done.

Finland - 12 Turbo X´s, 10 sold two weeks ago according Tekniikan Maailma magazine.
Here in Spain, from 30 units available, there are only 12 available.

Wow, what a great read Eric.
You could tell those guys are Saab fans (as I have always thought of Winding Road).
…Germany 90 units. Isn´t it this country in Central Europe with more than 80 million inhabitants?
I guess, Saab Germany does not believe in the Aero X.
i ve read an article a while back. it stated that all 90 t-x for germany had been sold out in the first week of the iaa. i will see if i can find it and post it later here. i guess that many of them are dealers stock cars.
Is there any noise if they will continue making the Turbo X in 2009 or is it just a one off car to launch the XWD? I mean why spend the money to make a one off that nearly sells out before you even ship the first one to only stop making it.
yeah they should start with the turbo-x a no compromise performance line like the bmw m series…
Swade, as others have said previously, it is hard to know how many of those ‘orders’ are customer orders and how many are dealer orders.
Russia, 26 quota, all is sold, isn’t possible to place order to any dealer yet.
There aren’t enough Turbo-X’s to make it a worthwhile car to market. It’s a relatively expensive way to make a “halo” car to draw back the Saab enthusiasts and it seems to have been wonderfully successful in that respect.
Now the cars they need to market the crap out of will be the 9-3 Aero XWD and the 9-3 2.0T XWD. If they can offer the 2.0T XWD for ~$31k-$32k and the Aero XWD for $37-39k then I think they might just be able to reverse their plummeting sales in the US.
As far as I know there are no Turbo X’s in Ireland yet. I took delivery of the first TTiD to arrive here a couple of weeks ago and my dealer at McCarthy Motorpoint (http://www.motorpoint.ie/) was humming and hawing about ordering one in for the showroom. At nearly €70K it’s a lot of bobs plus the high road tax | fuel charges | insurance | depreciation etc. . . . I reckon the 10 already ’sold’ here (http://www.trollhattansaab.net/archives/2008/03/irish-turbo-x-review.html) are mostly to main dealers!
I can see 100 of Canada’s 125 allocation heading south. Reason? Here in BC any car over $55000 is subject to a 15pc ‘luxury tax’ on top of the 12pc sales taxes. I dont know if Ontario and Alberta have a similar tax but it will put a dent in sales, unless your dealer will sell you one for $54995? Having said that, its not even for sale here in Canada - YET! Am off to the Vancouver Auto Show next week so I will ask then.
My Melbourne (Doncaster) dealer have sold their allocation of 4 Turbo X’s (I ordered mine in Sept 07 and it is confirmed a manual with 19’s and the sunroof ) they have had a lot of enquiries could have sold more..
To reiterate an earlier post of mine regarding this issue.G.M. looks at a dealer giving an ordered unit “priority status” as a defacto “sold” order .This is fundamentally different from the previous system used as recently as two years ago when on the Saab Iris ordering system you designated the order as “retail sale” status and even registered the pending owners name.We sell 250/300 new Saabs per year.We have 4 Turbo-X models on order “priority status”.We do not have a single deposit.
Hirsch upgrade:
I have some ‘inside information’ from Hirsch-Performance about the upgrade for the Turbo-X:
300 hp - 430 Nm
Hardware tuned!!
France : 50 cars to be sold, 43 are already purchased. I got the information from a major SAAB dealer as I just purchased the 43rd one today ;).
In Canada, I order my Turbo X in February. Based on the information I got, I should receive it at the begininng of June. Zippy, Canada is a quite large country and I don’t think any other province have a special tax on luxury cars. I know about a special tax on cars consuming more than 13.x l/100Kms.
Based on the number of recent SAABs we are seeing on the road, I think SAAB sales are quite good in the province of Quebec and the Ottawa region. So, I have a problem to beleive that many of the Canadian Turbo X will be sold in the USA.
I have to agree with Michel that many of the Turbo X units allocated to Canada will stay in Canada. The luxury tax doesn’t apply in AB, and judging by the effort I’ve had to put into securing my allocation, the units will be snapped up rather quickly.
Best of luck to you Zippy, I hope you’re able to get one!
