Saab compact concept vehicle to show in New York

GM issued a press release today outlining some of the attractions at the New York Auto Show, which will open its doors to the public from March 21 to March 30.

It appears that both the Saab 9-4x BioPower Concept and the Saab compact concept from Geneva will be making an appearance.

General Motors’ global design talents come together as GM showcases several award-winning concept vehicles at the 2008 New York International Auto Show. Headlining the event will be Pontiac with three world premiere vehicle introductions. Saab will also unveil an environmentally friendly compact sports luxury concept vehicle to North America….

Some of the notable concepts you will see at the show include:

* The Buick Riviera concept, unveiled to acclaim at the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show, marks the return of a renowned Buick nameplate and communicates a new global design vocabulary for the Buick brand.

* Inspired by Scandinavian design values and a respect for the environment, the crossover Saab 9-4X BioPower Concept combines the benefits of turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing for the first time with high octane E85 fuel (85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline).

* The HUMMER HX concept, a compact, E85-capable vehicle, features a design based on the ideas of a trio of young designers who are new to the HUMMER studio.

* The Cadillac Provoq Fuel Cell Concept, a petroleum-free, hydrogen-powered vision of the future of luxury transportation.

* Unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, the GMC Denali XT concept offers a 50-percent increase in combined fuel economy over comparable small pickup trucks when running on gasoline, and incorporates a new, muscular form in a performance-styled, hybrid sport-utility truck (SUT).

So, if you’re in the area, or looking for an reason to go visit, Saab’s two newest concept cars might be just the excuse you’re looking for.

LOL! “…communicates a new global design vocabulary for the Buick brand”

Now I thought it was stupid when I first heard the term “design language” in regard to the Aero-X. Now “language” has turned to “vocabulary”? Who gets paid to think this stuff up!?!?

It’s a freakin’ “style”, people, not “language” or “vocabulary”. These stylists are taking themselves way too seriously. They suddenly think they’re “artists” or something. Pretty soon I predict we’re going to have “designer” cars. Like the Jean Paul Gaultier of cars or something. You’ll be able to get a Saab “Nesbitt Edition” or something silly.

Looks like I now have a reason to head into NYC!

Ohh poop, that mean no chance of seeing either of them here at the Vancouver Autoshow which more-or-less runs at the same time.

Wow, at first it was London (wrong !), then Geneva (right), but now a treat for North Americans. I envy you East Coasters !

      Exciting stuff.

Anyone know more about expected production date ? Please don’t say 2010 or later.

      Ooops, Edmunds InsideLine says:

“The production 9-1X is expected to share GM’s Delta global compact platform with the next-generation Opel/Saturn Astra, and will go into production in early 2009.”

Now how is it possible (if true) that the 9-1/X can go into production by early 2009, when we’ve been told that the 9-4X won’t even start until late 2009/early 2010 ?

    • Markac said:

SaabKen: I think MY2010 is the earliest that can be expected, but that could mean late 2009. I wouldn’t hold your breath though!

It would be nice if the platform had it’s debut with the new Saab and was used on the new Astra a bit later. Then Opel. Vauxhall, Saturn and Holden could have the kudos of saying their new car is built on a premium Saab platform! That would make good sense, wouldn’t it?

    • Arild said:

Well, if the 9-5 moves to Rüsselsheim some time next year, then maybe there will be an opening for the 9-1 at the Trollhättan plant. But I guess it takes time to prepare the production line and upgrade the machinery, so maybe 2009 is a bit yearly?

    • Markac said:

Arild: I think current 9-5 production will cease early 2009. With demand being what it is at the moment it wouldn’t be hard to make a stockpile. Then it is possible 9-1 production could commence late 2009 for an MY2010 car?
I am hoping, but maybe all the planets have to be aligned for something like that to occur?

let us not forget the “gary fisher” edition.

I’ll be there as I have been for the last 22 years

saab9x: the Gary Fisher Edition was named after a bicycle company/team. The car came with a Gary Fisher mountain bike. However, I remember when I was younger my dad had a Ford Bronco II Eddie Bauer Edition, so I guess maybe that counts? ;-)

    • SaabKen said:

I’m surprised Ford never marketed an Explorer called the “Soccer Mom” Edition ;-)

Or the Excursion “GHG Unlimited” :-D

Or Chevy with a “Suburban Sprawl Supersize”

OK I’d better stop there …..

SaabKen: or an Explorer “Firestone Rollover Edition”. Okay, that was bad. :-P

Instead of the Eddie Bauer Edition I want the Jack Bauer Edition. It comes with gunports. 8-)

    • SaabKen said:

      Jack Bauer Edition …. LOL

I wouldn’t mind a Clint Eastwood Edition, cuz punk, I feel lucky !

    • riku1100s said:

I guess a Hummer H1 Schwarzenegger Edition would be slightly out of date ?

I’ll be in NYC, so does that mean London is getting 9-5 concept or something bigger?

It quite possibly means that the whole London story was made up by a British website so as to big-note their home show….
