Pollhattan Saab - Interiors in the future

Two concepts in just over two months. Two interiors. Both fairly different.

Which one do you like and which one do you hope to see in future Saabs?

First, the 9-4x interior:

And then we have the 9-X BioHybrid interior:

The steering wheel looks much better in the 9-4x and so does the ventilation. Bye the way: Please bring back the Griffin!!! Doesn´t matter how. Maybe illuminated when the alarm system is ready and then blinking when it´s on surveillance instead of the red blinking light near by the front window! That would be fantastic!

Fantastic idea Gripen - that would look so cool :)

What about flames from the mouth on the rear when you have a tailgater behind? ;)

The 9-4X interior is probably prodution ready in it´s basic shape and form. The acrylic bit is probably just for show and frankly.. We will probably se GM´s awful AC unit find it´s way into the 9-4X.. Wouldn´t surprise me if the Caddy Provoq gets the goodies when it comes to non of the shelf features.

The 9-4x is just too attractive when compared to the 9-x. for some reason though, when they do cgi’s of concept cars they show the dash and interior lights in blue which look amazing, but then the real thing would be in green. but yeah, 9-4x bring it on!!!!

The 9-4X interior looks awesome, but the general layout is it not a mere update from the dashbord we all know since the 9000, just adding new materials and updating the buttons ?

What I like about the 9-X BioHybrid dash is the console running over the drivers door, quite unusual, but if you consider the ergonomics, not a bad idea at all. So it is still very driver-orientated and buttons and info is close within the drivers reach and sight.

I guess the part on the door will never get into a production model, being a to complicated item for the GM bean-counters considering the LHD/RHD-markets, but that is just the most attractive part of the dashboard. Anyway, it should be transformed somehow into a production model. Modern and refreshing. So it got my vote.

The steering wheel in 9-4X is the same as in the new Opel Insignia and also in the Opel Antara. Probably an indication that it will probably look somewhat the same when it hits the streets in late Q3 2009.

Can’t Elkparts promote the mark_belfast-idea as an saab-only-aftermarket item named ‘the revenge of the griffin’ ?
So everytime you’ll overtake a GM-chairman, vice-chairman or another GM-responsible person in their Antaras, Insignias or whatever at the Autobahn near Rüsselheim on their way home, you can set the flames on and burn their cars … .

Wilfried: Was there something wrong with the 9000 interior? I’ve always liked it.

In the case of the two — 9-4x and 9-1x — this is perhaps an apples-and-oranges comparison. The 9-4x is a large luxury vehicle, while the 9-1x is a small car. Different parameters dictate different treatment.

Good poll, I was thinking about the same matter myself. I think 9-4x definitely. Since 9000 all SAAB models have had the “driver oriented” central console. I think that is one of the most important reasons why I own a SAAB today. SAAB should keep that kind of “cockpit” in future.

Having to take ones eyes from the road as the 9-X design would dictate seems both unsafe and unergonomic (and really un-Saab-like).

And it just bears far too close a resemblance to the interior of the American Civic:

“N” …The steering wheel in the 9-4X has som shapes that goes in line with the Antara.. But still in my eyes looks completely different and it´s Not the same. The 9-4X has a design of its own and I doo hope it will come close to the concept when it reaches production.

    • Jeff said:

      Oh god no!
the 9-4X interior reminds me of an Audi and the bio-power hybrid is very close to the Aero-x but in no way matches SAABs previous function.

    • logan said:

both interiors are progressive, but the 9-X is just showing off what could be, while the 9-4X shows off what I believe is a closer reality to production.

    • Gareth said:

It’s a tough one - neither do much for me but I’ve plumped for the 9-x. The 9-4x looks a bit cramped particularly for your right leg.

Both clearly are built along the lines of ‘big centre console’. Integrating a handbrake lever into either interior would be a delicate job too, otherwise it might look like an afterthought.

For a new car (especially a Saab in 2010), I expect two things:

      1) A big touchscreen to control ACC, radio, CD, MP3-player, navigation, internet… There should basically be no other buttons. Most things are automatic and help me as a driver, and when I need to adjust things I do that with an interface that changes depending of the situation. Less is more.

      2) A HUD. Is there one in any of these two concepts?

Looking at the two, the interior in the 9-4X seems to be more finished. But it’s not the future for me. It looks like a Volvo from 1998. The one in the 9-X may have some flaws, but it’s more future. Cleaner, less buttons, more cockpit. That’s the way I want Saab to go.

The question I have on the 9-x interior is the big bulky tunnel between the seats. The car is not XWD, so I hope there is plenty of smart storage space in it.

    • Charles said:

9-4x easily. Some of the ideas are cool for the 9-x that could be incorporated into the 9-4x. But overall, the 9-4x looks much better.

    • N said:

“Tompa”.. You´re right. The 9-4X and Antara sw is not the same. However, if you compare the 9-4X and GTC concpet (Insignia) they seem to share a lot of details. The buttons are in the same places and the shape is the same. Since that sw will follow Inginia to production, I pretty sure it will do the same for 9-4. And that is, in my mind at least, a good thing!

    • Tompa said:

Ctm.. Looking at gm media online and pictures of the 9-X you can find one picture where there HUD written on a drawing of the interior. So I guess the 9-x has one.. Sorta..

I think the white color is a miss, and what the heck is the thing in the centre? A piece of a circuit board?
Touch screen displays in the future? Well, a car is supposed to work in the cold too, so I am not so sure about that…
Renault has had controls in the doors for many years now, so it’s not exactly groundbreaking by Saab. I am very sceptical about electronics in the doors, as the cabling is always a weak link. A perfect door is without any cables connected.

…the steering wheels need the griffin logo, SAAB logo reminds me of truck decore.
