More Team D including video from the Alcan 5000 rally

As you’ll recall from Swade’s earlier post, Team D are rally rookies driving a 1985 Saab 900 Turbo in the annual Alcan 5000 rally, a 5000-mile drive through the frozen expanses of Western Canada. With the rally complete about a week ago, our brothers-in-arms have been posting additional information, especially a small collection of video clips that presumably they had little time to edit and post while the rally was underway.

This is my favorite of the bunch: A video of the ice slalom on a frozen lake in the Yukon territory:

The Team D Saab did us proud, finishing seventh overall and first in class!

Vive la C900!!

Love the coverage, thanks! Just a small quibble — it’s an ‘85 900, with those extra 8 valves helping spin the tires extra fast. A limited slip is in the long range plans if the rest of the car continues to hold together (and no reason why it won’t).
Should be some additional video and more pics on the Flickr site over the weekend.

Correction made. Thanks for the input.

As Swade says, I wish that I were there. (Actually, not really. Do you think that you could do the Baja 1000 next? I’m not really set up for the cold.) EnG

Seriously cool. I’ve been watching from afar. Now I’d like to get up that way too…

It’s easier than one might think. In summer the roads are good (if busy) and there are plenty of services along most of the routes. The exception of course is that Dempster Highway. Late winter travel seemed to be pretty smooth, just bring extra fuel and plenty of warm stuff! Next Alcan rally will be the summer version, in 2010 — the route should be posted at http://www.alcan5000.com in the next few months but I talked with the rallymaster last night and know that he’s planning on doing the Blackwater road again (also very fun in summer) and the Top of the World highway with a transit of the Denali highway and a finish in Anchorage, AK. Many of those roads are unpaved but smooth. Harder on tires than in the winter, though. Would be great to see more Saabs on these events — start saving gas money now!

      Let’s see…..

$3.50 per gallon at average 20 mpg (this is a rally, so conservative estimate) for 5000 miles works out to $875. That’s for the actual race.

$3.50 per gallon at average 25 mpg for the 6,000-mile round-trip from Nashville to Western Canada works out to another $840.

$1715 for gasoline. That’s a lot of loonies, let me tell you!!

Money , yes of course , but time will be hard to find too .
      A great adventure anyway .
Hello to Hans who’s a nice guy for having gently answered to my Email .
And thank you Swade , without you I would have ignored the existence of the Team D

EnG: You were close on the mpg during the event. We averaged just over 21 mpg — that was with the roof rack and a bunch of spare parts/tools dragging us down. Also the cold temps and high speed driving on transits affected that performance. To be honest we were probably getting our best mpg during the scored TSD sections (but not the ice slaloms!).

Hans just compiled our total fuel costs. Canadian petrol is more expensive so your estimate was low by about 55%. Yes, we were surprised by it as well. We made 30 fuel stops, and figure the total volume purchased would have filled the tank over 17 times. Total distance from start to nearly my driveway was just over 5600 miles in 11 days.

As Golfhunter points out, the other challenge is time to get to and from the event. We’re fortunate we’re based near the start and the finish was only 600 or so miles away. But hey, we’ve got just over three years to save and plan for the next one!
