A little more Saab ad stuff

Eirik was kind enough to send in a few more old-school ads.

They go a long way to reminding us just how advanced Saabs were, back in the day. Many of the qualities like safety and utility remain but there’s still some work to do…..

Click to enlarge, though you’ll still need to squint a little.

Saab 99

Saab 99

And if I may indulge just a little, how good does that 99 look in the second poster? I know the 900 will likely be regarded as the Saabiest Saab for all time, but the 99 with it’s slightly shorter nose is the one for me.

Bring it back in a retro-modern style with a modern engine and I’d camp out at a showroom to own one.

Maaaaaaagnificent!

I love photos of the 99 leaning heavily into turns, with the inside front wheel reaching so far to hold the road. So much a fuss is made today about “cornering flat” with thicker sway bars. I think my 73 99 handled significantly better than my current 9-3, and the 99 didn’t even have a single sway bar.

Love the 1970’s Saab ads. During the month of hatch lovin’, I posted this one.

Yurk: I agree about the fascination with flat cornering. Flat cornering is predictable, but not necessarily quicker. In fact, at times I think that the tire contact patch remains more firmly planted if the suspension allows a little more travel.

Race cars corner flatly, but they also have exceedingly soft tires — some with almost balloon-like sidewalls. This keeps the tires in contact with the pavement at all times.

      Saab 99 enthusiast too !! Vive la 99 !!!

Etienne: The VW Passat was originally called the VW Dasher in North America. It is the outline drawing third from the top.

I don’t know why it’s the only model listed rather than the marque. LIkely because VW meant Beetles or Type 3 econoboxes to most Americans and Saab didn’t want that type of comparison — they wanted to compare only to the top of the VW line.

I also agree the 99 is the king! One of my high school buddies had one and from that point on I always wanted a Saab.

The first ad should be stickied on the TS front page. When I gripe about how GM has mismanaged the brand, and how far it has let Saab’s reputation slip since 1990, that ad is exactly what I’m talking about.

In the 70’s and 80’s, the Saab 99, C900, and 9000 were some of the sportiest, most modern looking, most technologically advanced luxury cars on the market, and they were considered to be full equals to their German counterparts at Audi and BMW.

Now after 1990, BMW and Audi took their cars upmarket, while GM went fishing in the Opel parts bin. Is it any wonder why Saab sales have been declining since the 90’s?

More importantly, try imagining where Saab might be right now had Ford or another company purchased it instead of GM and allowed the Saab lineup to continue fighting the Germans the way it did in the 70’s and 80’s. It’s enough to make me giggle.

Its cool how the logo hasn’t changed. At least it doesn’t look like it has.

Tim: There is a BUNCH of old Saab ads here. And more here.

I don’t know if these two are in there specifically, but there is a good chance…

Additionally, click on the link in my comment above for a sinlge related ad in a slightly larger size.

      Hope that this helps…
