Gotta be quick, just about to go pick up a new work vehicle!

Toyota - grrrrrr.

I enquired about the V6 Aero brake problems.

SaabUSA indicated that the number of potentially affected vehicles is 6,000 9,669*. i.e. that’s the number of Aero V6s sold in the 2006-2007 time period.

As mentioned in the article yesterday, they’re co-operating with the investigation, but Jan-Willem also added that he’s had no issues with the brakes in his current Aero.

I’ll keep you posted.

* originally emailed to me as around 6,000, but I’ve just spotted a comment at Winding Road where JWV from Saab states it to be 9,669.

There’s a new microsite for you dutch-readers out there on the TTiD.

Cool music. Videos are in English, but they’re all things we’ve seen before.

It can be found at http://www.hetgevoelvantoenmethetverstandvannu.nl/ and that translates to something like “The feeling from then with the sense of now”.

Saab’s BioPower vehicles have been shortlisted for an 2008 Australian International Design Award.

Whilst BioPower has been around for a few years now, it’s only just been released here in Australia, hence the 2008 nomination.

From my Flickr feed today.

The original Black Turbo stuns the ladies, but unsure if the bordello red interior has created enough of an impression, our man prepares to show them the alluring 8v turbocharged engine. Ooooh, you are too smooth.

There is a mixed message about Saab in a Consumer Reports article on Autoblog (good for GM I guess)- Consumer Reports ranks Cadillac CTS above BMW, Mercedes:

      • “There were a total of four vehicles in this test group–the CTS, 328i, C300 and Saab 9-3 Aero. The 328i and C300 posted “Very Good” overall scores and are ranked roughly mid-pack. The 9-3 earned a lower overall score, though still high enough to be in the “Very Good” range; it finished near the bottom of the ranking.”

      • “Consumer Reports is Recommending two of the vehicles in this test group, the 328i and the 9-3.”

      • “The size and pricetag of Saab’s 9-3 place it in the upscale sport-sedan class but the vehicle doesn’t measure up to tough competition. CR’s top-of-the-line Aero model has quick and smooth acceleration but lacks the refinement of the best sports sedans. The ride is stiff, the cabin is noisy and cramped, and fit and finish isn’t as good as buyers expect in this segment. The Aero ($37,815 MSRP as tested) is equipped with a turbocharged 255-hp, 2.8-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission that deliver smooth, strong performance. The Saab’s brakes are very good overall.”

      LMAO !!!

Maybe Imola Red could have been “Nevada Red” or just “Red District” …….

Talked with a local Saab tech … he indicated he hadn’t heard of the investigation into the Aero brakes yet, but he quickly said that he has a feeling he knows what the culprit will likely be.

There is apparently an “extra” valve in the Aero braking system, and an electric vaccuum pump to augment (regulate?) the pressure in the system (apparently on the 4-cylinders this is accomplished with a system tied to the mechanics of the engine, but the 6-cylinders can’t create enough pressure with this system, so they have added this electric pump.)

He indicated that this is likely a part failure, and that the loss of braking probably occurs “right at start-up” and then improves (per his experience).

As I try to retell this, I realize that I am not entirely clear whether he thought that the problem was the valve or the pump itself (or even whether the valve is part of the pump assembly.)

Okay - for those of you more mechanically inclined than myself - and that know the Aero … does this sound right? (It’s entirely possible that I have not relayed his answer perfectly.)
