The Saab Bridgestone Superbowl ads for 2008

As previewed here last week, there were two Bridgestone ads shown during the Superbowl (you gotta love an underdog, eh?), which is traditionally primetime for new ads, with space selling for absolute megabucks.

Saab didn’t have any ads in the lineup. The mere thought is somewhat pffft-worthy. But there was a Saab featured in two ads for Bridgestone tyres, or ‘tires’ if you’re from the US.

Good ads, and good Saab exposure. I wonder if they had to contribute for the product placement?

Here they are:

I caught the 9-3 in both of those ads as well last night – they were pretty good.

Given each ad cost an average of $2.7 million US dollars that is some pretty expensive product exposure.

GM also head plenty of E85 flex fuel Tahoe and Yukon’s carting people around and gave MVP Eli Manning a Cadillac Escalade Hybrid which was funny – they told him it would be available in fall 2009 but I think that was the last thing on his mind after winning that game – he probably wanted to get to a TV so he could watch ‘House’. ;-)

Unfortunately, I haven’t found a single person who knew they were Saabs until I told them, and then the response was “Oh, those were Saabs?”.

      From MSN (see below)….
Not one word about the star of the
      show: the Saab!
      :-(

      Bridgestone: Screamin’ Squirrel
ZF: This was the Jeep commercial with the singing animals meets the Budweiser
“Whattuuuuuuuuuup” guys. But sometimes, even two good-looking parents can have
an ugly child. Sorry, Bridgestone. Started strong, whimpered out.
Hope you can write off that $2.7 million bill.

Even knowing it was a Saab and in this context, I still had a hard time making-out that it was a Saab.

Nice that Saab was able to work something out with Bridgestone (at least it shows they’re trying) but I really don’t think this is going to bring Saab any kind of exposure.

I think the cars looked great, but I suspect that saabyurk is not the only one having to explain that those cars are for sale here in the states. I think it might be one of those cases where viewers assume that the car is some obscure and insignificant necessity in advertising tires.

The first commercial, everyone in my family recognized that the car was a Saab (thanks to my incessant reminders of how great they are). The second commercial, not so much. I could barely tell.

Those were two of the best commercials, though. The Budweiser/Fire Breathing one was really good, too.

We both saw the Saab immediately in the first one too and I almost had a heart attack thinking it was going to be a Saab ad!

Maybe saabyurk’s “friends” are not N.E. fans or they don’t get up to that area. Saabs are everywhere.

I went to the movies yesterday and saw Michael Clayton (the multiple Academy Award-nominated film). In it there’s an OG9-3 parked in front of George Clooney’s character’s Mercedes S550 and it’s onscreen for probably longer than the Saab was featured in The Bourne Identity. At the same time my 10-year-old son was in a different theater watching National Treasure 2 with his grandma (don’t worry, I didn’t pay for it, my mom did!). He told me an OG9-3 was in that film too! Add into that the 9-7X prominently featured in that other new film (don’t remember the name of the film but see the truck on the commercials all the time).

I wonder if Saab USA has actively been working with studios to put Saabs in the background in new films. It’d cost them a lot more to have the star driving around the Saab (product placement) but background cameos have got to be cheap or even free!

    • Jeff said:

Untraceable was the 9-7x movie…I’d much rather see Book of Secrets than Michael Clayton. George Clooney is a twit.

As mentioned above, I HIGHLY doubt they made any exposure to the Saab 9-3 in general. Though it put a smile on my face when I saw the first one, which showed the 9-3 for like 2 seconds.

The second one though, you really could barely tell it was a 9-3 unless you are a Saab nut.

Not bad though overall; Better than nothing :)

Frankly….. the 2008 model looks AWESOME!

It’s great we’re even talking about this. Big plus for the brand :)

Oh, also, the Coke ad with James Carville and Bill Frist was the best commercial.

I caught it was a Saab right off…but I suppose most people won’t. Anyway I thought the ads were pretty hilarious. Who wouldn’t want to run down Richard Simmons?

It is interesting to note that despite the cool commercials and the the fact that Bridgestone chose a ‘08 SAAB 9-3 to demonstrate its tire traction prowess-SAABs sold in the US (AFAIK) have never worn OEM Bridgestone tires.

Michelin, Pirelli, Goodyear and currently Continental tires have been the tire brands of choice for SAAB. Perhaps the Turbo X will wear Bridgestones-but the ‘08 9-3 wear Continentals.

I happen to have just bought four new Bridgestone HP550s yesterday for my 06 9-3SS to replace those silly Perelli’s that went bald within 25k miles. Silky smooth so far! Great Ad! And tonite was the first time I’ve seen that ad!

I also read recommendations from others who recommended Bridgestone for their Saabs as well, so I went with em. They look sweet too…
