Saabs in new movies….

Two new movie appearances by Saabs have been noted and sent on to me.

Typecast Saab

This first is interesting in that it’s been done by some of the same people who produced Sideways, the movie featuring a red Saab 900 convertible (the car now resides at Walter Wong’s garage and is available as a loaner when you get work done there).

The movie’s called Smart People and here’s a screenshot from the trailer:

Smart People

Per B sent me the email about that one with a note attached wondering if this was a little too much “car typecasting”. Watch the trailer at the link above and you might agree. All that’s missing are the elbow patches on Dennis Quaid’s jacket.

Saab sees dead people

HappeningSbThe next one is by director of The Sixth Sense - M. Night Shyamalan. I guess it’ll be interesting to see if he can reach the heights of T6S again as I don’t think his subsequent movies have done so to this point.

Click the thumbnail to enlarge.

It’s called The Happening. The official site doesn’t have a trailer for the film loaded up as yet. The release date of Friday 13th 2008 might give insight as to the genre. Here’s the poster, as sent to me by Frank. You can see the OG9-3 in the foreground there.

Any more new sightings, let me know.

There was a nice silver Saab 9-5 in “Martian Child” which was released on dvd two weeks ago.

    • Trent said:

I saw Matian Child the other day on the plane. Not sure if it has been released in Aus yet? Was not fussed about the storry line of the movie, but the 9-5 stared in it, in almost every second sreen shot.

Ugh, Shalalamalan. The guy doesn’t have one good movie to his name. The car on the poster probably doesn’t have any significance in the movie, it was probably some hippie artist adding his car to the poster :p

As for Smart People…Ellen Page, Dennis Quaid, Thomas Haden Church, I like it already. I can ignore Sarah Jessica Parker (who also hasn’t done anything worth caring about).

      John, Paul, George or Ringo?

Don’t anybody ask if that’s Abbey Road ok!!!

When discussing the Saab starring role in Sideways with Jan-Willem Vester of Saab Communications he was keen to point-out that Sideways was originally a book and in the novel the car was not a Saab. It was the film’s producers who insisted it be a Saab.

I didn’t want to be a buzzkill, but I wonder if this was because the character who owns the car in the film is a “wine snob” and is probably a guy who is aspiring above his means. He drives an old beat-up symbol of 80s yuppie excess and success. This is like the guy who can’t afford a brand new BMW but instead drives an old beat-up one? Maybe I’m over-analyzing?

In the script it’s actually written, “…he climbs into his 12-year-old SAAB CONVERTIBLE” (caps unmodified). It seems to me they’re using his choice of car as an indicator of a flawed personality trait of the character’s.

On an only slightly-related note (film, but not Saab-related) I just saw No Country For Old Men today and thought it was outstanding. Pretty violent, but nothing like those “slasher” movies “the kids” are seeing nowadays. I think this is the first year I’ve ever seen two films nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award (the other being Michael Clayton, which I didn’t care for at all). I really want to see There Will Be Blood too. I’ve seen two, why not make it a trifecta!?!? ;-)

    • Richo said:

….or maybe they know they had to crash it in to a tree and the occupants wouldn’t survive it if it wasn’t a Saab.

    • Mag-X said:

Maybe there’s just a couple of Saab nuts in the crew between these two movies.

      Might be worth investigating.

    • 1985 Gripen said:

Richo: you didn’t see the film, did you? The car was crashed into the tree sans occupants. It was rolled down a hill into the tree to act as an alibi for a characters broken nose at the hand of a woman he was cheating on his wife with. :-(

Did they release Sideways in Australia? If they did you should try to pick it up on DVD. It was a good film.

    • Jeff said:

Gripen - No, they hit the tree, and then tried to hit the tree again, the second time without occupants. The first time, they were in the car.

Every generation has stupid slasher flicks that are horrible, it has nothing to do with modern movies :p

      Swade - Probably Pete. :p

Oh nice! Thanks for posting my submission (The Happening), Swade :)
And on another note, I watch “War of the Worlds” again tonight, and I noticed that during the scene where the tripods first appear out of the shaking ground, a classic 900S hatch is seen shaking around. Fortunately it’s not seen getting demolished

Last week, I saw the norwegian movie Lønsj (Int. title: Cold Lunch), and in the first scene of the movie, there is a 9-5 (06 or newer - could be an Aero) which has been involved in a hit-and-run accident. You see the beautiful car for approx 5 minutes, as the driver and the passenger discuss what to do etc.

The movie was in my opinion crap, but the Saab almost made it worth the 20 bucks.

I recently saw a commercial for Garmin(?) that featured a red 900 looking forlornly as it’s owner left it in a parking lot. The car looked good if a little dirty, has anyone in the USA seen this one?

    • gunner712004 said:

one of my favourite movies HIGH FIDELITY with John Cusack has loads of footage of a 900 classic convertible, damn it they even have sex in the thing, surely no film can get better than that!!i

    • Saaby said:

I also just saw Martian Child, with John Cusac and his Saab 9-5.

The car is a bit of a mystery one. IIRC, which is sad since I just saw it like 3 days ago, it has the headlight washers of 98-01, but it seemed like the car had yellow turn signal repeaters and Saab+Scania logos, but then in one shot it’s juts a Saab-Scania logo, so who knows what MY it is!

I did notice that none of the sound effects the car made sounded like a 9-5 at all :p the doors sounded wrong, and the engine really really sounded wrong on startup.

If High Fidenlity with John Cusack has a Saab too, maybe John Cusack drives one in real life?

    • Mark said:

Frank, I’ve seen that Garmin commercial featuring the Saab 900 many times, and I love it. The car is identical to a Saab I owned in the 90s.
