Saab 9-1 sketchorama!
We’ve got just over a week until the Saab 9-1 concept vehicle comes into view in Geneva.
We’ll await the customary leakage of images and in the meantime, here’s the sketches that have done the rounds of the web so far, whether it be exclusively here or on the web at large. It’ll be fun to see whose interpretation was closest.
This first one is a new one sent in by WooDz. It’s based on the invitation to Geneva that’s being sent around the local area at the moment, which I sort-of-erroneously covered as another 9-1 pic last week. WooDz has taken that base, added various elements including some Aero-X at the front and some TurboX wheels to create this very nice profile.
Then we’ve got the MotorTrend image that set the internet alight last week. It was proven to be a sketch that wasn’t Saab based at all. The journalists responsible had the artist graft on several different front ends. It’s also believed to be a class smaller than the proposed 9-1 that we’ll see next week.

Recently, I showed these images put together by Swedish design student, Niklas Palm.
Top Speed published their own ideas…..

And before those, Niklas Palm had penned some other design ideas….
Tekniken’s Varld have also published their design artist’s ideas:
There was also one person’s idea of a Saab 9-1 Viggen (which in the light of the 9x connection looks quite relevant right now)
Of course, all of these are only ideas.
The one official look we’ve received is from the Saab Global website:
The unveiling is at an event in Geneva on March 3rd.
This might be the first Saab I buy brand new. Can’t wait to see it.

WooDz, the first one, in blue, is nice….VERY NICE! I think we’ll have a winner if it looks like that. Nice job!
WooDz! that car is the hotness!
WOW! That rendering blew me away, WooDz! I would be very content if that’s what the 9-1 production car looked like! The shape is beautiful, especially that aggressive, bold front end. My only feedback is a much more curved windshield would be awesome
WooDz, great looking car!
The woodz picture just looks fabulous. Similar to the teknikensvarld picture.
Stretch it a little and it will be close to the A3 hatch which is a success for them, and would fill the gaap under the 9-3.
Don’t forget this one that Tiago do Vale pointed to on your Nov. 13, 2006 article:

Unique, but not for me though.
I guess Niklas does not know that “X is the new Black” is on the 2008 list of banished words & expressions? Other than that, the car is sweet and has a more reasonable/expectable front in terms of size/length. I just don’t thnk that loooong nose or wheelbase will fly on a car in this class.
Hi all,
I like the first one in blue as well, how about this one? Posted here before by Swade. Not labelled as a 9-1, but it sure looks clean.

I LOVE the first one.
Steven: I agree with you. I don’t think a long, heavy Aero-X style nose will scale well to a smaller car. I think it would work on a 9-5 sized car if the rest of the body is styled around it and probably the next 9-3 to a lesser extent.
A pillarless coupe/hatch, as some of those drawings imply, would be nice, but I think unlikely? Remember the pillarless hardtop coupe that Saab planned for the OG 9-3 which never made it to production? I would’ve loved one of those, although it probably would have meant the end of the 3 door hatch and I wouldn’t have liked that much!
Out of these I like the blue drawing but but like the one Chase did one http://www.gminsidenews.com,
drawing comp.
Comparing the Tekniken’s Varld image to the Saab.com teaser I’d bet money that the artist of the Tekniken’s Varld image had access to the 9-1 design materials.
Just look at the front end, roofline and the slope of the side windows, and more importantly the proportions and the interior. I’ll be very surprised if the 9-1 concept doesn’t look just like that or very close to it.
Tekniken’s Varld’s imgages look like 5 door interpretations of the 9-3X with a mild Aero-X nose job and a bit of 9X for good measure. It’s my favourite so far. A 3 door will look even better!
