Motor Trend on the Saab Turbo X
The Turbo X reviews continue and this time it’s Motor Trend who have been for a quick run and recorded their thoughts.
This is just a brief review and I’m not sure if they’ve participated in the recent drive event in Marseille or not. There are some brief driving impressions, however:
The result is the best-handling 9-3 to date — oversteer is more prevalent and easier to maximize, and the overall balance borders on neutral. Moreover, torque steer has been all but quashed.
It’s a good review for seeing just what the Turbo X offers as a package and Motor Trend seem to rate it pretty highly.
A recommended, albeit brief, read.

If I can also note one thing at this point…
We’ve covered quite a few Turbo X reviews here in the last week and missed quite a few as well due to language barriers.
In all the reviews I’ve covered, not one reviewer - not one - has commented on a lack of power.
I agree with everyone else that Saab would have been wise to boost the power in this limited edition car up to 300hp. If only for the marketing edge it would have given them. But as we’ve seen from the reviews so far, power isn’t an issue.
What’s been the highlight is the ability the Turbo X has to make the best use of all available power and deliver the best drive a Saab 9-3 has ever delivered.
Case closed for the XWD system if you ask me.

There’s another Turbo X review from Finland here.
MarkoA tells me:
….they seem to like it and they claim it to be the most powerful “real Saab” ever. The headline says “the return of a Phantom (the comic hero)”.And in the end it says, just 2 out of 14 Turbo X models for Finland are still available.
We place a pretty high standard for Saab at this site. It seems in the eyes of most of the automotive world that they’re hitting a good mark with this model.

With all these test vehicles being sent around the be thrashed about by journalists, and the ones that are being shown at car shows and such, I wonder what the real production numbers are.
These are pre-production models that are getting driven now. I had word from Saab Sweden last week that production XWD models - one for real life customers - will start rolling off the line in the next few weeks.
Swade you are dead right about about the power issue. In Europe handling is the main concern - with enough power to be fun. Wanting to use big BHP and V8s to race away from the lights isn’t really the Saab image of being cool or staning away from the crowd is it?
This car is going to kick butt.
Fit for a vagabond!
