Just a little more excitement….
Can’t help it.
The tension is building. This is the announcement for the Saab premiere on GM’s Geneva Motor Show subsite. It’s actually quite a big deal as it’s the only specific brand announcement being shown on the whole Geneva site.
Yeah, we’ve seen the image, but click it to enlarge and you’ll see where and when it’s all happening.

On the tubes today, word came through that Saab might actually be calling the concept vehicle the 9-x rather than the 9-1. It’s from a trusted source, but I’ve got my hesitations as I haven’t seen a trademark for that name like we saw with the 9-4x. Not with the hyphen in it at least.
I guess we’ll find out next week!

Why would Saab call yet another concept the 9-x (9x)? sounds strange to me.. and not logical.
I wonder if the concept is based on the real Delta arcitechture? Hope somebody takes a shot underneath the car at the exhibition.
Maybe the concept is just a 9-x with an Aero-X front and a plugin-hybrid? And when the car hit the market, it will be called 9-1 because if the hybrid-technology didn’t work out in time that could always be explained with the different name.
Is there going to be a live webcast of the reveal?
Is the forthcoming car certain to be the smallest in the range? It would be a bit daft to brand it as a 9-1 now and later make something smaller.
I’m sure I’ve read the 9-2x and the 9-7x were created on the (relative) cheap to see how a smaller Saab and an SUV sized Saab would do in the market. They enlarged the model range cheaply and/or quickly, but now could be creating a 9-2 from the ground up without yet settling on whether to make a smaller car or not.
Gareth: You’re right using 9-2 would leave a space for an even smaller vehicle on the next Corsa platform. The car at the Geneva show is being touted as a 9-2x replacement, but I guess that name (9-2x) now has something of a stigma attached?
I suppose there’s always 9-0.5?
this prototype does it have the AeroX’s tilt roof. I just wonder what the lines on each side of the cabin are for. They are placed where the side mirrors would be attached.
Per i believe those lines are the outlines of the hood. The 9-whatever is just like the 9-4X a close to finish vehicle and not a design test platform like the Aero-X.
Oh, waiting to see it is nervwrecking
They could be using the X in “9-X” as a placeholder (like in algebra), as opposed to naming it the same as the prior “9X” concept car, with the number coming closer to the unveil. Perhaps as Gareth points out they’re reconsidering calling it the 9-1 and are thinking about calling it 9-2 in case they want to make an even smaller car later. This makes sense as this concept is meant to compete in the market the 9-2X did (”hot hatch”).
another 9-1/ 9-2 competitor??
http://jalopnik.com/361987/vw-scirocco-breaks-cover-early personally i don’t like it all, its too fugly… heres hoping that the saab is stunning
I dunno about the production Scirocco, it reminds me a bit of an updated Corrado but I’ll have to see one in person before I pass judgement.
Unfortunately it will probably be stunning in person, which means there’s one more car that the 9-1 has to outdo.
Pics of the production Scirocco have come out today and it looks decidedly generic. The profile looks a little like the Iroc concept, but the front is quite ordinary. I think a lot of VW fans will feel quite let down.
