A Saab Grille

I’ve never tried this but I’ve gotta say, after watching this I’m feeling kinda peckish inspired.

Saab Grill

What we’ve got here is Autoblog demonstrating the age old art of using one’s engine to cook food. And the vehicle they’re turning into a Weber-n-wheels?

A 2008 Saab 9-3 2.0T. I assume this is a tester they’ve commandeered from SaabUSA, so if they get it back smelling like ham ‘n pineapple, they’ll know why.

It’s a little long, but it’s got me feeling experimental. I know the Saab Ice Experience people like to cook tinned sausages during the event. Anyone else ever tried this?

Didn’t watch the vid, but this has been a joke among Americans for some time…

      1. During an episode of “Cheers” (popular TV show in the 90’s), it is revealed that Cliff, the know-it-all character, has been cooking his “hobo steak” in the engine compartment and that it lead to vehicle failure.
      2. See here.
      3. There was some car in the 1950’s that featured directions for cooking on the engine in the actual owner’s manual. This may be urban legend, but it would be cool to see if it is true.

I want to say that there is an obscure reference to cooking on your engine in Steinbeck’s novel “The Grapes of Wrath.” Apparently it was not uncommon to placed canned foods in the engine compartment to warm them as families migrated out of the dust bowl toward California in the 1920s and 1930s.

It has been decades since I read it, so I could be wrong … it may have been something else I read about the same era … but I remember seeing a passing reference and having to look up why they were doing this.

The best part of the video is that there is a jet flying over while he is putting the food onto the engine!
