Surprise Surprise – in-car video test.

The 900 video I wrote about a little prematurely yesterday didn’t eventuate, but I thought I’d test the camera mount in the car anyway.

It wasn’t fixed anywhere near as securely as in the Viggen, which shows, but with a little work it might work OK.

Come for a ride through Hobart with me. It is a literal five minute drive from the CBD to the bushland area I end up in. The beauty of a small city.

It sure felt faster in the actual car at the time.

And stay tuned for the surprise ending…..

  1. ooo I see, can i ask, did he have a light bar / trailer board attached too his bikes. A pet hate of mine is people who carry bikes and cover the lights. good video, waiting for the next one, well done Swade.

  2. Now, this typically belongs in topgear… you should be stopped by the local police and not answer any questions – just keep staring in the void in your white overalls with white and blue helmet :) (strangely enough, it is never shown what finally happens to Stigg after he’s stopped!).

  3. Nice video Swadey! Question… what is the camera mount you use? Must get one and do some footage in my two sleds as well.

Damn cops… I would have liked to see him try and pull you over in his POS nissan bluebird stationwagon… he can’t pull you over when off duty… what a crock!

I had a close call with an unmarked cop car myself tonight in my 2002 9-3 Aero (now at stage 3+ and soon to be stage 4 with a new filter to turbo intake to be fitted). It was behind me and chose to slip in beside me at the next stop lights. I looked over and it looked like a typical mum-mobile with mum driving (didn’t see the passenger). She gunned it off the lights… i thought I am not having that so i gunned it as well… by the time i got to change into 2nd I was level and about to pass. But the next set of lights stopped us both! I looked over then as she was a car ahead and saw the rear hidden lights, extra antennas and the male cop passenger! Whoops! Needless to say i let them go! haha!

  4. Shame about all those traffic lights up in Davey Street.

I didn’t think that the Tas Police could do such things. He was off-duty!

  5. What. A. Hoon.

He couldn’t have done anything anyway, the dickhead! Bloody cops, always out to spoil the fun.

I recently got nabbed for speeding by a cop with a hand-held radar. After a quick pursuit, the officer alighted from his vehicle and said that his radar had detected me doing 121 in a 110 zone. “No question about it, this is a scientific instrument”, he said boldly. “Oh, that’s like the one I have mounted here, which just showed I was doing 112km/hr”, I said, pointing to the detector unit on the dash of my work vehicle. “Had it calibrated this morning, too. What about yours, it appears to have an error of +9km/hr”. Cop looks bewildered. “Oh, errr”, he says, before directing me on. ;o)

  6. Nice vid, but “The art of overtaking” isn’t appreciated by most of our fellow road-users.
But did you or didn’t you had the place to overtake him safely (within the eventually speed-limits)?

Recently a Touareg-driver wasn’t satisfied i used the – reasonably large – empty space before him to join back in the row, while overtaking part of a row of cars.
His big flashing lights stayed on untill traffic allowed me to overtake the rest of the row before me and i got rid of the VW.

  7. Nice video – I spotted the c900 at the side of the road and you didn’t mention it, Steven :)

No matter how fast you drive, a forward-facing in-car mounted camera is never going to give the sensation of speed.

What you need to do is mount it low down. Use a bullet cam for the purpose.

Here’s how it can be done:

More videos of my Saab on the track with a bullet cam can be seen here:

Hope that this gives you some ideas for future videos :)

  8. Sorry, Steven, not wishing to hog the comments, but if you take a look at these then they have some cars in and the sensation of speed is much better:

My last post on the subject – I hope that the bullet cam gives you some ideas – let me know if you want to know more about it.

Looking forward to your next vid :)

  9. Great ride, and a beautiful sound coming out of that engine.

Hilarious ending though, it looked like it came out of a well coordinated show.

  10. To the comments above — here in the US, even off-duty policemen are obligated to enforce laws at the time they are known, but were you breaking any laws at the time? I can’t see the posted limit nor the speed the car is travelling to determine if you would have been exceeding the limit or passing illegally.

Anyway, great video. I’ll have to rig something up in the ‘vert for the same drive through my neighborhood.

  11. That ending was priceless. I am sure an off duty cop has nothing better to do than flash a badge at you on such a nice day. I had an off duty officer call the dealer I was working at as I was ‘flogging’ a new Camaro Z28 on the highway years ago and passed his crappy Oldsmobile. Nothing became of it, but seriously…

Initially watching that video and seeing cars come at you on ‘the wrong side of the road’ was a bit startling at first. I though the video was going to end with a Saab crash test.

Looks like a nice place to live.

  12. John et all FRUK *)

I’d much more prefer have the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car and drive on the right side, than the opposite, as in the video ;-)

    //post in very good vein//

  13. The badge must have been in his hand… he was stroking it, talking to it… “yessss my little badge of power, my precioussssss……”

Pity he rides a pink BMX!!!!

  14. “John: maybe we are seeing a flipped version of the video here in America? ”

Its because you are on opposite sides of the equator. Its like the International date line, some people just cant wrap their heads around it.
