Saab Pride - Pennsylvania Style

Once again it’s time to meet up with a fellow Saaber, sit down for a cup of billy tea and admire his ride, and his surroundings. It’s the Saab Pride of Ownership competition, possible with the support of Elkparts - good elks!

Today’s entry comes from Alex, and as the title mentions, he’s in Pennsylvania in the US.

I am a transplanted New Yorker and these photos find me not among the skyscrapers of midtown but instead the quite lanes of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The following two pictures were taken at Swarthmore College which is located on the grounds of a world renowned arboretum. When the flowers are in bloom it is place of breathtaking beauty, but during the winter it is as dark and dreary as the rest of the northeast. Only the magnificent architecture of the oldest building on campus could provide a background stunning enough to complement my lovely 9-5.

The main building in the pictures is Parish Hall which serves as the center of activity on campus. The timber frame building is over a hundred and fifty years old and when the Quaker college was initially founded the building housed the dormitory, classrooms, and dining hall. Since those early days the college has outgrown Parish Hall. But none of the new buildings are as beautiful or as dignified as the first.

The car is a 1999 9-5 which my father purchased new. A few years later the car became mine and has yet to leave me wanting. Some critics say the design is dated but I have driven many of the new European, Asian and American offerings and few can barrel down the highway in the left lane as comfortably and composed as my wagon. In a few years when I take a spin in my father’s new cross-wheel drive 9-5 I might momentarily long for the more powerful engine and surefooted stance. But later when I am back in my wagon’s comfortable cockpit I will realize that I haven’t quite had enough of the original.

nice car! i am a new yorker transplanted from philadelphia and have been to swarthmore many times (college parties!). so in addition to admiring your car, i was able to briefly relive some happy memories. i also have a 1999 9-5 and have heard the dated comment. perhaps the design of the current 9-5 is rather dated from a saab standpoint (it really hasn’t changed at all since 1998/1999), but i believe the 1999 model is just as decent as new europeans on the road. beautiful car and thanks for sharing.

the 9-5 looks well poised. the pics have a “car-of-the-manor” feel.
      thanks.
