Update on Saabrina, the electric Saab!

Swade’s post on naming your Saab reminded me to check in on Saabrina, the electric NG900. And, as luck would have it, Mark has posted an update!

Mark is very, very close to completion of this lengthy project, and I must say that he’s done this EV conversion with a great deal of precision and forethought.

One great example of his ingenuity in the latest update is Mark’s use of the cabin heat to warm the batteries when necessary, and then when the batteries are too warm, he uses that heat to keep the cabin warm. Very cool!

Mark, we can’t wait!

Makes you wonder with all the technology and know how available why manufacturers cant do a good job of this?

My first thought, seeing this through sleepy eyes at 6.30am was “Wow! Mark’s installed a boom box!”

Nick: I hope that they could. One of the things that Mark has said on his blog that separates him from the mainstream driving population is that he’s willing to live with the 30-40 mile range limitation. That’s always been the sticking point of ev’s.

Eggsngrits: surely battery technology has moved on and GM must have the budget to move something like this foward? Any way it is great to see what one man can do. Keep up the good work Mark!

Batteries are getting better, but the rigors of automotive use are still outside the capabilities of even the best batteries. That’s what the plug in hybrid is all about, and that’s where I think that GM and Saab are spending all of their development dollars.

Eggs, i thinki the VOLT version of hybrid is much better than we have now in Toyota & Honda.

The engine only kicks in to charge the battery. The current crop of hybrids are waste og..just about everything.
