Hatch Lovin’: Vintage Trash Talkin’ from Saab

Ahhh…. the good old days. The days when “image” advertising was something that only cigarette manufacturers, perfume purveyors and cruise lines did. When automobile ads actually said something. Something meaningful, anyway.

Take a look at this U.S. magazine advertisment from 1974. As you may recall, Saab got started with the hatchback concept in that model year with the Saab 99 Combi Coupe, or, as it was known here in the United States, the Saab 99 Wagonback.

As this advertisment points out, the 1974 Saab Combi Coupe was built like a Volvo, was as well-appointed as an Audi, and had the cargo capacity of both cars combined.

Take a look.

Brilliant… to quote swade: BRING BACK THE HATCH!

Oh and how crazy does the ovlov look? It’s like driving a wall…

call me crazy, but I’d guess the ‘happy Saab driver’ on the banner just might be the work of one crazy dude from Tennessee?

Nope. Swade is the only man with that kind of control. EnG

THAT’S the picture I was talking about when eggs suggested a “life is good” t-shirt.

Also, this is an awesome ad.

Whatever happened to smaller cars? If only the 9-3 and the A4 could be the same size as in that ad…Volvo seems to be doing a better job with its S40 and C30…but…they are volvos.

We may need a new tagline…your wheelbase does not need to expand just because your waistline is…

I have this car…. or at least a 74 Hatch…. Hope to have it on the road this summer…. time/money being keys to that… I don’t know of another ‘74 hatch still out there in the US…. I’ve seen on or two on Ebay in the last few years….. I am happy to have such a historic car… even if I’m the only one who thinks it is historic… :)
