Aero-X – Exterior design

Stretching the Envelope

In exterior design, the Aero X fulfils its mission as the first car from Saab to focus on communicating the brand’s unique aviation heritage. And, as you would expect from Saab, it does so in an intelligent, typically  ‘Saabish’ manner.

•    Body shape to resemble jet aircraft fuselage
•    Glass canopy opening eliminates doors and A-pillars
•    Easier access to low-slung cabin
•    Prominent jet aircraft-style front air intakes
•    All LED exterior lighting
•    Further evolution of Saab three-port grille
•    ’Turbofan’ wheel design for brake cooling

In concept, the entire form of the Saab Aero X’s curvaceous, low-slung bodywork is a dramatic evocation of the Svenska Aeroplan AB’s roots in aircraft design. Its innovative cockpit canopy and aviation motifs at the front and rear are designed to come together as a metaphor for the fuselage of a jet.  It is, in essence, an ‘aircraft for the road’…and jets don’t have doors!

Principle exterior designer Alex Daniel explains: "This is what a high-end sports car from Saab could look like and, as a pure driver’s car, it is intended to create a strong emotional response. It was also important to keep a clear Saab identity, so the shape of the wrap-around screen and elements of the front and rear styling are designed to echo aspects of previous and current Saab models."

Aero-X – The Concept

Concept rationale

Opening Up New Horizons

The Saab Aero X concept is a dynamic, two-seater sports coupé that showcases two core brand elements: Saab’s aviation heritage and its Scandinavian roots. Here designers Anthony Lo, Alex Daniel and Erik Rokke, who conceived this study at design operations in Sweden, explain its significance.

The muscular shape of the Saab Aero X clearly signals its role as a high performance driver’s car, while its looks and visual appeal show this is a design that could only come from Saab. With innovative features typical of the brand and thrust from a 400 bhp, twin-turbo BioPower engine, it opens up new horizons for Saab’s development.

"This car has given us the opportunity to push out the boundaries of Saab design, to explore new directions without any constraint," explains Anthony Lo, GME’s Director of Advanced Design. "It represents our vision of what a high performance car from Saab could look like. In making such a strong statement, it is probably the most self-expressive, emotional design Saab has ever produced.

"We have focused on harnessing the visual potential of Saab’s aviation roots, as well as introducing design elements in lighting and instrumentation that have been inspired by our Scandinavian experience."

Aero-X: The Unveiling

As i’m writing this, the new Saab Aero-X concept is only about 8 hours away from its official unveiling.  Thanks to GM Communications, we’ve all been invited to view a live feed of the event via GMTV.

The unveiling will be at 5.30p.m. CET (which I assume is Central European Time).  This equates to 11.30a.m. EST in the USA and about 4.30 in the morning here in Oz (bloody time zones!!).

If you’re around at the right time and you’d like to watch the unveiling of the Aero-X LIVE, then here is your link

If you’re a little late for the live feed, see below….

——————

In anticipation of a fair bit of traffic today, I’ve reduced the number of items on the front page to just 5.  You can view earlier articles by clicking in the ‘February’ link in the archives (right sidebar).

If it’s the Aero-X you’re after, then all the information and pictures I have so far are available for your perusal by clicking on the Aero-X button near the top of the right sidebar (under the Google Search box).

This is the below section.  If (like me) you’ve missed the live unveiling of the Aero-X, then a replay will be made available about 1 hour after the event has concluded.

You can watch the video-on-demand replay, approximately 1 hour after the event, by clicking here.

Enjoy!!

Saab Ice Experience

How. About. This…..

Robin and Kerry M, from the UK, recently won a place at the Saab Ice Experience. I’ll get more details and pics up later in the week. Robin’s just emailed me today and sent a few pics through. There should be more, plus some details about the trip, later in the week.

In brief, imagine driving a bunch of Saabs around Sweden’s north with the Saab Performance Team in attendance as well as Per Eklund!! Does that sound like a few days of fun, or what?

As I said, more to come soon. Here’s a few advance pics. Thanks very much to Robin and Kerry. I’m a healthy shade of environmentally friendly green with envy.

Monday Morning Snippets

Sorry for the lack of posting over the weekend and the lack of replies to emails. Not too well at the moment. Will see the local quack this morning, let’s just say it’s a visit I’m not looking forward to.

——————-

With all the activity this month I completely overlooked the fact that Trollhattan Saab had its first birthday earlier this month. The first entry was made February 7 2005. Shortly after I started the blog the 9-3 SportCombi made it’s Geneva Motor Show debut. What a year it’s been since: the 9-7x has started selling, the partnership with Subaru has dissolved – taking with it the 9-6x and the future of the 9-2x, the new 9-5 has been released, the V6 engine has come along, the Biopower engine has started selling in various markets and now, the Aero-X will make it’s debut tomorrow.

That’s not a bad news year for such a little company. In that time, Trollhattan Saab has moved from a Typepad domain to its own domain and grown from 20-30 page views a day to an average of 5,300 page views a day this month. There’s been just over 700 different articles published and over 2,700 comments made. Personally, I’ve increased my knowledge abou the Saab company at least 10-fold and I also managed to fulfil a dream this year with the purchase of my Viggen.

Thanks to everyone that visits here for coming back, spreading the word and being so supportive of the site. Your comments, contributions and thoughts are always more than welcome.

——————-

Less than 24 hours now to the unveiling of the Aero-X. I have a feeling that the car is going to be much nicer to look at in the flesh.

I’ll have a video feed of the unveiling available to all comers from around an hour after the event itself. If I can figure it out, I may even manage a live feed. Stay tuned.

——————-

Some of you in the US may have seen a WSJ article on “manwagons” over the weekend. Apparently that’s the new term being bandied around for vehicles like the 9-3 SportCombi. The article compared such vehilces as the Audi S4, Merc E55, Saab 9-3SC, Dodge Magnum and Volvo V70R. I haven’t read it as it’s subscription only, but thanks to Walt, I got a quick overview in my inbox:

In addition to saying some very nice things about how much fun to drive the Sportcombi was (as well as saying it was the most fun per $ of the bunch), I thought it was great that the Sportcombi was being thought of in such fine company (the S4 was the main alternative to the Viggen for me). The main downside of the Saab for the reviewer was the lack of hp, but that seemed to be more than made up for by the fun factor.

Carl chimes in with his first 2006 9-5 experience during a visit to a Saab dealership he once worked in:

I ducked out the side door of the building, key in hand, and made my way to the silver 9-5 2.3T sitting outside. The appearance is more striking in person than any photo can really express, more like a Chevrolet product than Saab. Moving on to the interior, the seats were heaven, everything else is rigid plastic. I started the car up, relieved that the belt warning sound wasn’t the same as the 9-7x sitting in the showroom. There was a good 2″ of fluffy stuff on the ground and, unbeknown to me, Pirelli P8 all-season sneakers on the 17″ wheels. I took off in search of solitude from the Saturday afternoon traffic and found myself heading out of town towards the highway.

Before I had a chance to even come within a mile of an on-ramp, I decided it would be best to take the short cut back to the dealer and not deal with idiots coming off I-95. The 9-5′s handling in the snow, despite the lack of snow tires, was incredible. The manual controls on the steering wheels are instant response now, as they don’t have to
communicate through the SID to get to the transmission controller. The car felt much more solid than the previous two variants (having worked at the dealer from MY99 through MY2002, I drove my fair share of them). I was not able to fully gauge the uprated B235 engine, but I’m sure it’s one hell of a yank when you step on the pedal without the snow.

The new audio head unit brings out the best of that good old Harman/Kardon amplifier under the dash with more audio settings (bass/mid/treble/auto-eq) and of course, integrated XM. Yeah, I’d miss the SID and would have trouble going back to reading all the stats under the speedometer, but this update is a welcome change and I am certainly one to recommend this car to anybody in the market for a fantastic car.

Hold on to your hats, people. Geneva’s coming up. And i still believe that there may be more for Saabisti than just the Aero-X. Time will tell.

Even MORE Aero-X pictures

My thanks to John for sending more of these through. As you can see, they’re from Saabscene.com and they’re what GM has, this week, referred to as “incomplete renderings” (though there’s at least one actual photo in there, too).

And yes, we finally have some interior shots!!!!

I’ll have more details later, but thanks to GM communications, I should be able to offer either a live feed of the Aero-X unveiling, and/or video on demand. I just need to figure out how to get it up and running. Like I said, more details on that later. For now, enjoy the photos…..

JAJ sees the future

Jan-Ake Jonsson, as well as recently being in Oz (see below), has also been in Atlanta for the launch of the 2006 model 9-5. The following was published by Wards Auto, but supplied to me by Saab. As I’m totally stuffed after a day of painting, window-cleaning and banging nails, this is perfect content for me. No thinking, just read and enjoy.

Jan-Ake speaks, and Trollhattan listens:

Jonsson says despite the recent Kerkorian-fueled flare-up in speculation about Saab’s viability, the niche-appeal Swedish automaker and GM “agreed” late last year on a 5-year business plan for Saab “that includes significant investment” in the Saab franchise.

That investment includes, among other things:

Development of a cross/utility vehicle that is “a little more passenger-car-like” than the GM truck-based 9-7X SUV Saab currently sells. “It’s a development from scratch,” Jonsson says of the future CUV (likely to share a front-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive platform with other GM vehicles). “It’s going to be a global vehicle.”

A potential new model line below the 9-3, currently Saab’s entry point. This model, probably a hatchback called 9-1 or 9-2, would tilt in global markets at the increasingly popular premium hatchbacks such as the Audi A3 or Volvo C30, shown at January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Saab officials are stoked regarding a concept vehicle to be shown at the upcoming Geneva auto show. The concept, fronting an aggressive new styling direction, could presage the premium hatchback or the CUV, although Saab sources refuse to provide details.

An all-new 9-5 flagship in 2008 that puts the current model to rest after more than 10 years in the market. It and a new 9-3 will be based on the next generation of GM’s Epsilon FWD/AWD platform. Jonsson confirms both new models will offer AWD as an option, because “if you want more (engine) performance, you’ve got to have all-wheel-drive.”

Jonsson says Saab also is working to craft a more consistent image for the brand, after years of mixed messages

A five year plan. New models and best of all, AWD.

I like Jan-Ake. I like him a lot. Seems like a fairly straight shooter. He gave the 9-7x’s fuel economy a bit of a bagging last year. I like a man that can admit the shortcomings of his own company. He’s generally the type of guy that’s capable of fixing them rather than glossing over them.

I just wish he’d looked me up while he was here in Oz.

Torino 2006

We Aussies have 2 medals. OK, one of them was actually won by a Canadian, but we’re happy anyway. Not as happy as when Steven Bradbury won gold at Salt Lake City (his competitors fell over and he skated by them to win), but happy anyway. If any Canadians want to give me some trouble of winning gold for us, then I have 1 word for you: hockey (what the heck happened there, anyway?!?).

Anyway, Salomon Saab 9-3 SportCombi spotted at Torino. Looking good. From Flickr.
