Spy stories III

There’s still even a little more to come, but these are the latest from Djup Strupe II. Behold, some interior, tail and wagon shots.

The only question arising from these shots for me regards the tail lights. Here in Australia at least, vehicles are required to have a clear tail lamp for when the car is geared in reverse. There doesn’t appear to be a clear section in the cluster, but it may be different for different markets.

EDIT – just received from Djup: concerning your question about the clear taillight for reverse, it’s there: the left light towards the center looks red but has very small white lines that allow a bright white light to show up when reverse is engaged.

See below for the first images of the front of the vehicle.

Spy Stories II

The other day I bought you some information from my own ‘local’ Saab source, nicknamed Djup Strupe. This was information about the upcoming facelifted 9-5, among other things.

I’d now like to welcome Djup Strupe II to the fold. What’s he got for us? Well, he has a cameraphone for starters…….

UPDATE:

Thanks to Andante at Saab Central, we also have this pic from Expressen, a Swedish web news source. The picure is noted as being a montage, but shows the grille/headlight treatment a little clearer. And I’m starting to warm to it. Quite a bit, actually.

Down to business – part 1

Just prior to getting down to business, may I wish you all a happy Pi approximation day. Cheers.

————————–

I’ve got some research to do over the weekend, but you can rest assured that sooner rather than later I’m going to be dealing with this. See posts 29 & 30.

So again, for a SAAB to be a real SAAB, it needs three things:

- Designed by SAAB. The new design center will take care of this.

- Built from the ground up by SAAB. Now, I know that the new 9-3, the ng900, and the old 9000.. heck every car wasn’t built entirely by SAAB.. they really never built a car all by themself, but thats OK. They chose partners and platforms they wanted. Saab didn’t want an Impreza or a Trailblazer, I assure you. As long as Saab builds off of what they chose and they want, then its built from the ground up by saab. check.

- Quality at par with the SAAB image. Saab is a luxury brand. Not exactly top tier but on the same level as Volvo and Audi, or at least it used to be. The point is, the fit and finish of the vehicles needs to be at that level. The plastic controls, the dashes, the type of leather seats, every tiny detail needs to be up there in quality.

In my opinion, the 9-2x failed all 3 tests, the 9-7x failed all 3 tests (almost passsed the 3rd), the 9-3SS passes but gets a midgrade with quality, and the current 9-5 passes all of these. I expect the new sportcombi to pass everything with slightly better grades then the 9-3SS.

So this is my own grading system on how to tell if a SAAB is really a SAAB

I’ve got to say from the get-go that I’ve got all respect for Seth’s point of view, and I invite all and sundry to post their opinion either here in comments or at SC (at the first link above), I just don’t necessarily agree that it’s either right or practical.

Like I said: research first, then I’ll post.

SCCA National event

For all of you Aussie Saabists, the Saab Car Club of Australia has started to publicise it’s national get together for Easter 2006. A little early, you say? Well, it’s a big event and failure to plan on your part will see you miss out on the bookings that are being held by the club in anticipation of your coming along.

Here’s all the guff, thanks to Murray Vincent in Queensland.

************************

Dear SAAB club members and SAAB aficionados

On behalf of the SAAB Car Club of Australia, the Queensland branch invites you to the SCCA 2006 Easter Nationals (Sunfest 06) April 14 – 17 to be held at the Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

The Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove is a 5 star resort located 45 minutes drive from Brisbane and 25 minutes from Surfers Paradise.

Sunfest 06 is based at the Hyatt over the three days with activities in and around the resort, including:

* Concours / Show’n’Shine* – to display your pride and joy
* Motorkhana – try your hand at an easy to learn and safe sport
* Navigation Drive – enjoy some great country roads and scenery
* Welcome Poolside BBQ – delicious buffet with drinks
* Presentation Dinner – formal 3 course dinner in the “Grange Room”

This year SAAB Australia subsidised the participant cost of the Tasmanian Ramble and we are hoping to negotiate a similar subsidy for Sunfest 06.

Please note registrations close on August 19th and bookings after this date cannot be guaranteed. A ‘teaser’ PowerPoint presentation is available at www.saabclub.org.au – follow the links to the forum page for your state. A CD copy will also be sent to State and Territory club chairpersons.

Even if you don’t have time to drive your SAAB, why not consider flying and renting a car to join us at the event. Queensland Club members look forward to welcoming you to the Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove on April 14 for Sunfest 06.

Globe and Mail on the 9-7x

Trust my second home to provide a comprehensive overview of the 9-7x and of Saab’s history and future. Jeremy Cato has managed to write up one of the best reads on the 9-7x, and there’s been a few lately as you know.

Go read the article in full for yourselves. Jeremy doesn’t pull any punches about the company or about the 9-7x, but ends up with a pretty honest and upbeat assessment. Here’s an excerpt:

“Some 40 per cent of existing Saab customers have SUVs in their garages and 30 per cent of our owners have left Saab to buy a four-door SUV,” Spenchian says. “Our dealers have told us they need this vehicle. The initial reaction has been great.”

Not bad for what in all honesty is a stop-gap measure before the more serious barrage of new Saab models arrives. It starts this fall with the 9-3 Combi, a wagon-like version of the 9-3 sedan. There’s also an important refresh coming for the 9-5 in the autumn.

Next year, the 9-6X will debut. It’s a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) based on the 2006 Subaru B9 Tribeca platform that Saab engineers are working on with their Subaru partners. And toward the end of this decade, Saab will very likely add a smaller CUV to the lineup, a vehicle Saab insiders are calling the 9-4X. And Saab is also expected to replace the current 9-2X with a new version more uniquely Saab, but still based on the Subaru Impreza chassis.

“This is a pretty important time for Saab,” says Spenchian, a marketing whiz who recently took the top North American job at Saab after running marketing at Cadillac during its remarkable turnaround these past few years. “Years from now, we’ll probably be looking at this as the turning point.”

Perhaps so. If that does prove to be the case, Saab’s about-face will have come none too soon under GM ownership. Keep in mind that GM purchased a 50-per-cent interest in the Saab car business in 1989 and acquired the other half in 2000. But during all that time, Saab hasn’t put a penny into GM’s coffers as it has struggled to survive as a tiny brand selling no more than 130,000 cars a year. That happened last year, Saab’s best in history.

Spy stories

[puts on hat, places carnation in lapel and folded newspaper under left arm]

I have a source. Let’s call this source “Djup Strupe” for the time being.

I just contacted this source through a myriad of disguised phone lines that showed Djup Strupe’s location as being in Tangiers. Like I said, they were disguised.

Anyway, this source is connected, knows a thing or two about what’s going on in the Swedish kingdom. And here’s what the source told me:

1) The 9-5 spyshots we’ve seen up until now are very accurate. Djup Strupe saw some photos of the facelifted model that will debut at Frankfurt in September, taken directly from Trollhattan by Saab in the last few weeks and shown directly to him by some Saab honchos from Sweden. The 9x type nose as seen in these spyshots may be the look that is coming on newer model Saabs in the future. Djup did say that the nose in the photos shown was very similar to the 9x, with the outer ports of the old 3-port grill integrated with the headlights.

2) The same Swedish Saab honchos also revealed to Djup Strupe photos of the proposed 9-6x!! I begged and pleaded but these are top secret and were shown to Djup Strupe only, rather than handed over. I offered Djup Strupe a look at a photo posted here last week and Djup Strupe said that it’s a pretty good likeness. Djup Strupe was quite enthused by the pictures seen, to say the least.

This is the pic, different from he C-pillar back, but otherwise a pretty good likeness to what Djup Strupe saw:

Saab-96x.jpg

And yes, I know this is the smaller 9-4x sized proposal, but we’re looking at styling and concept here, not definites.

3) The 9-2x in its current guise will never be seen oustide North America and the 9-6x will only make it to Australia if a model is developed for Europe, Great Britain in particular (due to RHD compatibility). That’s nothing new, but what is new is that Suuby are fighting an Australian 9-6x like you wouldn’t believe as we’re Suuby’s 2nd biggest market outside of Japan.

[removes hat, crushes carnation and burns newspaper]

Apologies

My thanks and my apologies to those of you that have tried to subscribe to Trollhattan through the Bloglet subscription service in the sidebar to the left.

It’s only just come to my attention that it hasn’t been working properly.

Hopefully things should be OK now. *blushes*

Saab news and Drews 95

I’m away for work, so posting may be light for the next few days.

————-

Look for GM chief Rick Wagoner to make good on those job-cutting promises, and soon, as GM recorded another huge quarterly loss, particularly in North America. Other regions fared a lot better, with GM Europe recording its first profitable quarter in 5 years.

Overall quarterly losses were US$286 million but North American vehicle operations posted a $US1.2 Billion loss for the quarter. Luckily GMAC’s still contributing well. If Wagoner can get the mix of new models and lower medical costs right, there’s huge upside potential there.

Businessweek has a great report if you’re interested.

————-

Prolific local Saabist, Drew B, has just added to his stable with the purchase of a very rare 1973 Saab 95 wagon. It’s a yellow V4, formerly owned for around 20 years by another local and Tasmanian Saab Club founding member, Jim S.

Unfortunately Jim and his wife Mandy have moved to Canberra and they needed more reliable daily transport, so Drew benefited from circumstance and now has a new addition to his personal Saab museum, which consists of a pristine black 1993 900 Turbo S, a white 99 Turbo, a black 99 Turbo to be restored and a blue 1971 99 that’s currently stripped back to bare metal awaiting a respray (which will be an ongoing story here at Trollhattan once I pin him down for some photos and text).

Here’s the 95, currently the subject of a nearly week-long polishing and detailing assignment in Drew’s carport. More pics can be seen here.
